FOREWORD

This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) will serve as guide in adding

and subtracting decimal numbers through thousandths
without and with regrouping; and in solving routine or non-
routine problems involving addition and subtraction of
decimal numbers including money using appropriate
problem-solving strategies and tools. This will be your aid as
you learn new ideas as you enrich your existing knowledge
about mathematical concepts.

In this learning kit, you will gain knowledge about

adding and subtracting decimal numbers.

The following are the special features of this SLK:

a. What Happened
This is the part in which you are asked to answer
activities that will allow you to apply what you have
learned prior to the discussion of the learning
competency/ies.

b. What You Need to Know

This is the part where the learning competency/ies
is/are discussed.

c. What Have I Learned

This is the part that aims to check your understanding
of the learning competency/ies recently discussed.

We hope that this Self-Learning Kit will help you

enhance your mathematical skills that would soon be
applied in your everyday life.

II. What You Need to Know

Discussion:
Adding and subtracting decimal numbers through
thousandths without and with regrouping is the same with adding
and subtracting whole numbers. The only thing that differ is when
you solve the problem, you need to align all the decimals points
and do the process of adding and subtracting decimals.

The following are steps in adding and subtracting decimal

numbers through thousandths without and with regrouping:
To add decimals:
1. Write the numbers in column and aligned the decimal points.

4
2. Write an extra “0” at the end of a number if needed to keep the
numbers in correct position.
3. In adding, begin at the right and move left.
4. Write the decimal point in the sum, aligned with the decimal
points in the numbers being added.

To subtract decimals:
1. Write the numbers in column and aligned the decimal points.
2. In subtracting, begin at the right and move left.
3. Write the decimal point in the sum, aligned with the decimal
points in the numbers being added.

Let us follow the steps with the examples below.

Example 1: (without regrouping)

Add. 6.238 + 4.52 + 30.326

Steps

1 3.238 Write the numbers in column and

4.420 aligned the decimal points.
+ 30.321

2 3.238 Optional: Write an extra “0” at the

4.420 end of 4.52 to keep the numbers in
+ 30.321 the correct position. (Adding this
zero does not change the value of
the decimal or the sum of the three
numbers.)

3 3.238 Add. Begin at the right and move

4.420 left. Since it’s without regrouping, we
+ 30.321 can add the digit directly and no
37.979 need to put a carried numbers to
the next digit.

5
4 3.238 Write the decimal point in the sum,
4.420 aligned with the decimal points in
+ 30.321 the numbers being added.
37.979

The answer of 3.238 + 4.42 + 30.321 is 37.979.

Example 2: (with regrouping)

Subtract. 39.672 – 15.431

Steps

1 37.672 Write the numbers in column and

− 19.885 aligned the decimal points.

2 16 15 16 12

2 37.672 Subtract. Begin at the right and

− 19.885 move left. Since it’s with regrouping,
17.787 we need to borrow tens from the
next digit in the minuend so that we
can subtract the subtrahend from
the minuend.

2 16 15 16 12

3 37.672 Write the decimal point in the

− 19.885 difference, aligned with the decimal
17.787 points in the numbers being added.

The answer of 37.672 – 19.885 is 17.787.

6
Always Remember

In adding and subtracting decimal

numbers through thousandths without
and with regrouping, always
remember the following steps:
To add decimals:
1. Write the numbers in column and
aligned the decimal points.
2. Write an extra “0” at the end of a
number if needed to keep the
numbers in correct position.
3. In adding, begin at the right and
move left.
4. Write the decimal point in the sum,
aligned with the decimal points in
the numbers being added.
To subtract decimals:
1. Write the numbers in column and
aligned the decimal points.
2. In subtracting, begin at the right
and move left.
3. Write the decimal point in the sum,
aligned with the decimal points in
the numbers being added.

III. What Have I Learned

APPLICATION
Read, analyze and solve. Write your answers in your
notebook.

1. Charlene traveled 41.3 kilometers on Monday and 53.75

kilometers on Tuesday. How many kilometers did she travel in two
days?

7
2. In a midnight sale, a rice cooker was sold at P 1 449.95. If its
regular price was P 1 950.50, how much less was the sale price?

3. Joram bought a bunch of flowers for P 125.50. If he gave a P 100

bill and P 50 bill, how much was his change?

4. The rainfall on four consecutive days during a typhoon was 10.31

cm, 12.72 cm, 18.39 cm and 9.84 cm. Find the total rainfall during
the typhoon.

5. Miss Argoncillo bought 2.35 kg of pork, 3.75 kg of chicken, 1.1 kg

of beef, and 1 kg of liver. How many kilograms of meat did she
buy in all?

POST TEST

II. What You Need to Know

Discussion:

11
STEP 1 Read the problem out loud to yourself. Now that you can
form a clearer picture in your head about the problem you are more
prepared to solve it.
STEP 2 Draw a Picture about the problem. Picture out the
problem to understand it.
STEP 3 What is asked? Think about what you need to find to solve
the problem. Usually it’s in a form of a question.
STEP 4 List what is/are given. Do NOT FORGET to write all the
given numbers and their descriptions like 20 bananas, Php 4.00, 6
pieces of paper, etc.
STEP 5 Find the key words. Most of word problems have
keywords to figure out what operation to use like below
Addition- “all together”, “both”, “combined”, “total”
“additional”
Subtraction- “decrease”, “difference”, “fewer”, “how many
more”, “how much greater”, “have left”, “remain”
Multiplication- doubled/tripled”, “each” “equal groups” “in al”,
“of”, “per”
Division- “equal parts” “split between” “separated”, “percent”
STEP 6 Solve the Problem. Use the situation you have drawn and
the keywords above to know what to do with list of givens.
STEP 7 Check your work. Lastly, check if your answer fits what
was asked. Does it give an acceptable solution to what was wanted
in the question?

LET US TRY THIS: Alexis has ₱100.00 that his

mother gave him for lunch. He went
by Cory’s Convenience Store to buy
a can of Corned Beef at ₱38.25. He
also bought a bottle of cooking oil
that was ₱10.50 at Mary’s General
Merchandise. How much money did
Alexis have after?
