POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS

Dated: 14-05-2012. Time Allowed: 03 Hours. Max.Marks-80.
NOTE. ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS.

Q.No.
01. A one line diagram of two machine system is shown. The ratings are as follows:

Synchronous generator: 20 MVA, 11 KV, X”=0.15 pu

Synchronous motor: 15 MVA, 11 KV, X”=0.15 pu
Transformer T1: 25 MVA, 12.5 Δ / 132 Y KV
Transformer T2: 20 MVA, 132 Y /11 Δ KV
Line: (200+j500) Ω
Static Load: 5 MVA, 0.8 power factor lagging
Draw the impedance diagram for the system. Choose a base voltage of 132 KV for the
transmission line and base voltampere of 20 MVA.
If the motor is a synchronous machine drawing 15 MVA at 0.9 power factor (leading)
and the terminal voltage 1.1 pu find the generator bus voltage.

02. Determine Ybus for the 4-bus system and also draw the corresponding one line diagram of
the power system. The line series impedances are as follows:

Line (bus to bus) Impedance (pu)

1-2 0.25 + j 1.0
1-3 0.20 + j 0.8
1-4 0.30 + j 1.2
2-3 0.20 + j 0.8
3-4 0.15 + j 0.6

03. Calculate the symm etrical components of the following set of unbalanced currents
analytically and graphically:
Ia = 100  300 Ib = 50  3000 Ic = 30  1800

04. Two similar star-grounded synchronous generator, one of which has its star point
grounded, supply 11KV three phase busbars. An 11/66kv delta/star connected
transformer with the star point grounded is supplied from the bus bars. The impedances
referred to 11KV are given below:
Generator Transformer
Impedance to positive-sequence currents j 3.0  j 3.0 
Impedance to negative-sequence currents j 2.0  j 3.0 
Impedance to zero-sequence currents j 1.0  j 3.0
Determine the fault current for an LG fault (a) on a bus bar and (b) at an hv terminal of
the transformer (c) Also find the voltage to ground of the two sound bus bars in case (a)

05. In a power system, generators are connected to buses 2 and 4, and loads to buses 1, 3, 5.
The values of resistance and reactance per phase of each of the tie lines and also the bus
injected powers are given in table I. In the voltage column are furnished the original
values of the load buses 1, 3, 5. Bus 2 is slack bus, and the bus 3 the P-V bus. Determine
the value of voltage V1 (at bus 1) at the end of first iteration also draw the one line
diagram of the power system.

06. The star point of a 3kv, 3MVA three phase synchronous generator is solidly grounded. It
positive, negative and zero sequence reactances are 2.4, 0.45 and 0.30 respectively. The
generator is operating unloaded sustains a resistive fault between the RED phase and
ground. This fault has a resistance of 1.2  calculate the fault current and the voltage to
ground of the RED phase.

07. Derive an expression for the steady state power limit of transmission line of resistance R
ohm per phase and reactance X ohm per phase.
Show that if the reactance (X) of the line is varied the resistance (R) remaining constant
the maximum steady state power that could be transmitted over the line could be greatest
when X = √3 R.
A three phase overhead transmission line in which voltages at the both ends are kept
fixed at 66 KV has a negligible resistance and an inductive reactance of 20 ohms per
conductor. What is the maximum power that could be transmitted over this line?
08 (a) Distinguish between steady state and transient stability of a power system and discus the
factors on which these depend.
(b) Describe various possible methods for improving the system stability.
