Learning Competency/ies: Explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work Code: S9LT-la-b-26
together to transport nutrients, gases, and other molecules
to and from the different parts of the body
Key Concepts /Understandings The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding how the different
to be Developed structures of the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to transport
oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the different parts of the body.

3.LearningResources CURRICULUM GUIDE, Science 9 LEARNING GUIDE, Science 9 TEACHERS GUIDE,

4.1 Introductory Review the organs of Respiratory system. Explain how lungs work and describe how the movement
Activity of the diaphragm helps the air go in and out of the lungs.
(5 minutes)
4.2 Activity The students perform Activity 2 Bottled balloons (pp.5-7 learner’s module). The teacher will explain
(13 minutes) and demonstrate how to make the model of human chest cavity. The students will demonstrate
breathing process (Inhale and exhale) and make comparison of the movement of diaphragm
muscles.
4.3 Analysis Based on the activity performed, the teacher will ask the students the following questions:
(15 minutes) 1. Which part of the improvised system corresponds to the lungs?
2. What is the role of the balloon in the bottom of the system?
3. As you pull the balloon at the bottom, what happened to the lungs inside? What does it
correspond in the breathing process? What does the pulling of the balloon represent in the
breathing process?
4. As you release the balloon at the bottom, what happened to the lungs inside? What does it
correspond in the breathing process? What does the releasing of the balloon at the bottom
represent in the breathing process?
5. What might happen if you prick the balloon?
4.4 Abstraction Using the responses above (Analysis part), the teacher will ask the following questions:
(10 minutes) 1. What is breathing?
2. How does breathing differ from respiration?
3. What is exhalation? Describe the process.
4. What is inhalation? Describe the process.
5. Are inhalation and exhalation inseparable? Why or why not? What will happen if only one
process will be done (either exhalation or inhalation)?
.After which, the teacher will make a follow-up discussion on the topic. Let the students discuss how
the movements of the diaphragm cause the air in and out of the lung.
4.5 Application 1. How can you maintain a good and healthy breathing system?
( 5 minutes) 2. Are electronic cigarettes harmful to the breathing system?

4.6 Assessment Evaluation of the constructed model of the human chest activity in terms of durability, creativity,
(10 minutes) timeliness, and accuracy. (Rubric will be provided)

lesson
 Enriching /

4.8 Concluding Activity “All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with
(1 minute). reason.”.
