Tutorial (Symmetry)

1. Do all shapes have symmentry? Why? Illustrate your ideas by using diagrams.

2. Do 3D shapes have lines of symmetry? Why? Compare with 2D diagrams.

3. Are all symmetry figures congruent?is its reverse true? Two hands are congruent
or not?

4. Is it true that if the line goes through the middle of a shape it is a line of
symmetry? Illustrate your idea by using regular and irregular shapes.

5. What about rotational and reflectional symmetry? Aren't they the same types, or
does it mean something else?
6.

Diagram 1

Diagram 1 shows a cube.

(a) State the plane of symmetry as shown in Diagram 1?
(b) State the correspondent points with points A, B C and H with respect to plane of
symmetry.
(c) Is it possible the reflection axis lie on the above plane?
7. Describe the symmetry (reflection and rotation)of shapes in Diagram 2 (if
possible)

Diagram 2

8. The prism in Diagram 3 has 6 square faces and a regular hexagonal cross-section.

Diagram 3
(a) How many symmetrical lines?
(b) How many plane of symmetries?
(c) Is the number of plane of symmetry in Diagram 3 equal the number of
plane of symmetry of a cube?
(d) Is the number of reflection symmetry of the Diagram 3 equal the number
its rotational symmetry?
