Procedure

Definition Fever of unknown origin is a fever without a known focal for more
than a week with temperature of higher than either 100.4°F
(38.0°C) or 101°F (38.3°C),.

Purpose To provide instructions for health workers and permit treatment of


the disease.

Procedure 1. If a child has fever with unknown focus that persists longer than
1 week, always check if there could be a sign for ear infection,
pulmonary or urology disease, meningitis, consider Malaria if
it’s an endemic area.
2. The basic outpatient paediatric care can be done in the EMT
outreach unit, for treat fever at home give paracetamol or
ibuprofen 10-15mg  per 1 kilogram of body weight. Give
medicine according to patient problem.
3. Avoid to antibiotic prescriptions to minimize misuse of
antibiotics.
4. Advice mother or family when to return immediately. if fever
doesn’t go down or worsening signs appearing.
5. All severe health problems have to be referred. Clinical
examination supplemented with laboratory tests to screen for
serious bacterial infections should be the mainstay of initial
evaluation of children with prolonged FUO .
6. The treatment should always involve the participation and
information of the parents.

7. Give follow up care for the young infant if necessary.


8. If there are signs of sepsis (such as body temperature of >
38,5°C or <36°C, tachycardia, tachypnoea, altered mental state),
immediately refer the patient to a higher healthcare facility after
being resuscitated and stabilize.
