QUESTION 1 CLO-1 ( MARKS-20)

I. The following circuit operates only if there is a path of functional devices from left to right. The (5)
probability that each device functions is shown on the graph. Assume that devices fail
independently. What is the probability that the entire system work?

II. Suppose that the probabilities are 0.4. 0.3, 0.2, and 0.1, respectively, that 0, 1, 2, or 3 power (5)
failures will strike a certain subdivision in any given year. Find the mean and variance of the
random variable X representing the number of power failures striking this subdivision.

III. Disks of polycarbonate plastic from a supplier are analyzed for scratch and shock resistance. (6)
The results from 100 disks are summarized as follows:

a) If a disk is selected at random, what is the probability that its scratch resistance is high
and its shock resistance is high?
b) If a disk is selected at random, what is the probability that its scratch resistance is high
given that its shock resistance is low?

IV. In how many ways the word ENGINEERING can be arranged if the word start with the letter E (4)
& end with the letter N?

QUESTION 2 CLO-2 (MARKS -15)

I. The general manager of an engineering firm wants to know whether a draftsman’s experience (5)
influences the quality of his work. He selects 10 draftsmen at random and records their years
of work experiences and their work quality rating (excellent = 5, very good = 4, good = 3,
average = 2 and poor =1).The data recorded are given as follows:
Experience: 1 17 20 9 2 13 9 23 7 10
Rating: 1 4 4 5 2 4 3 5 2 5
Find correlation coefficient between experience and rating. Also interpret the result?

QUESTION 3 CLO-3 (MARKS -25)

I. An electronic product contains 25 integrated circuits. The probability that any integrated (5)
circuit is defective is 0.01, and the integrated circuits are independent. The product operates
Only if there are no defective integrated circuits.
II. The probability of a successful optical alignment in the assembly of an optical data storage (5)
product is 0.8. Assume the trials are independent. What is the probability that the first
successful alignment requires at least four trials?

III. A researcher claims that not more than 65% officers in the public offices come on time in (5)
their offices. A random sample of 60 officers was taken on a random working day, It was
observed that 37 officers were in time. Test the claim of the researcher at 5% level of
significance.

IV. The volume of containers of a particular lubricant is known to be normally distributed with a (5)
variance of 0.03 liter, Test the hypothesis that = 0.03 for the random sample of 11
containers are 10.2, 9.7, 10.1, 10.3, 10.1, 9.8, 9.9, 10.4, 10.3, 10.2 and 9.8 liters. Use a 0.05 level
of significance and assume that the distribution of contents is normal.

V. The heights of a random sample of 20 college students showed a mean of 174.5 centimeters (5)
and a standard deviation of 6.9 centimeters. Construct a 98% confidence interval for the
mean height of all college students?
