Although we grew up in two different cultures, when we met during courses provided by the British Council's English Language Teachers’ Resource Center {ELTRC), we discovered that there were surprising similarities in our experiences as language leamers and practice as teachers. We also found that we place a very high value on teaching culture through EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and using music, realia, and physical motions and’ movements to motivate learners and facilitate language acquisition. This book is intended to help EFL teachers in primary and secondary schools to teach language and culture by using a variety of authentic texts - prose, poetry, and songs - which comprise the cultural “baggage” of the native speaker. It can be used to augment a textbook course, or, especially for young beginners, it is a very effective pre-teaching tool to generate interest, motivate students and prepare them for later, more structured language study. It might also be interesting for students of English as a type of anthology for those who want to know more about American traditions and customs, and for those who enjoy English folklore and songs. HOLIDAYS GO ROUND AND ROUND vas conceived in a very special atmosphere, inspired by a group of 35 enthusiastic EFL teachers representing a wide range of different schools and all levels of instruction. This group has met regularly for two years at ELTRC to share ideas and creatively and cooperatively resolve common teaching problems. Initially, we shared our collections of holiday-related songs in cassette form, and received numerous requests for tapescripts. When the tapescripts were complete, we realized that we needed to_address_the myriad of questions which arose_concerning the INTRODUCTION origins and background of holiday traditions and customs, and we wrote special chapters about it. We feel a particular debt to these teachers who guided us with their questions, input, feedback and eager participation. Thanks to them this project acquired its present form and we can say that the materials it contains and related activities were truly teacher tested. The present edition contains 100 songs. Several criteria guided us in selecting materials, including special language aspects, pertinent historical and cultural information, and simply the attractiveness of rhythm and melody. Many songs employ the use of hand or body motions, which helps teachers to reach more learners by activating their musical or kinesthetic intelligences. Many of the songs and poems reinforce vocabulary (“I Love You More than Applesauce...”, “It’s Christmas”) or grammar structures (‘My Love"-degrees of comparison, “Spider on the Floor”-there is/ are). All of them provide valuable practice in listening. While many of the songs are traditional and known to every American, we also inchided some more recently composed songs because they contain interesting and pertinent vocabulary and open wide the possibilities for teaching with realia. We made every effort to include materials appropriate for all ages and levels ranging from very simple songs for preschool beginners to excerpts from the “Headless Horseman” or the texts of the “Gettysburg Address” and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which are intended for upper-intermediate and advanced students of English. We need to add that since the book is devoted to holidays in the USA, we thought it was logical to use the American spelling rules, It is our hope that EFL teachers in Russia will find HOLIDAYS GO ROUND AND ROUND a useful resource, and students will gain both increased knowledge and enjoyment from time spent studying English.
