2. Draw the cross and long sections of columns for the following cases:
a) i) 500mm x 500mm with 20-32mm dia longitudinal bars; ii) 900mm x 900mm with
32- 25mm dia bars; iii) 500mm dia bars with 16-25mm dia bars, the column is to be
spiral one;
b) Show the longitudinal and tied reinforcement of RC columns with factored axial
load=100 kips, negligible moment around both the axes. For architectural purpose,
the column size is to keep 27 inch x 27 inch.
4. A beam with dimensions b = 12 in., d = 24 in., and h = 27 in., with f’c = 4000 psi, carries a
single concentrated factored load of 100 kips at midspan. Find the maximum shear strength of the
concrete Vc at the first critical section for shear at a distance d from the support ( a ) if no axial
forces are present, ( b ) if axial compression of 60 kips acts, and ( c ) if axial tension of 60 kips
acts. In each case, compute Vc by both the more complex and simplified expressions of the ACI
Code. Neglect the self-weight of the beam. At the section considered, tensile reinforcement
consists of three No. 10 (No. 32) bars with a total area of 3.81 sq. inch.
5. Design a cantilever slab with cantilever length=3m which is to carry LL=125 psf in
addition to DL and SDL (super imposed dead load). Check the deflection as well.
6. a) When and why will you choose combined footing, mat foundation and pile foundation
for structures? Mention the design criteria of pile cap;
b) Mention the procedure to fix the size of a beam;
c) Explain the reason why the slab thickness increases with increasing the yield strength
of reinforcing steel.
