Comments
Antibodies to Soluble liver antigen (SLA) are specific for Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and present in 20% of
these patients, many of whom are negative for other autoantibodies. AIH is a chronic progressive liver disease
of unknown origin that responds well to immunosuppressive therapy and has a poor prognosis if untreated .
Early and accurate diagnosis is hence of great importance. 70% of these patients also show presence of Anti
nuclear antibodies, Anti smooth muscle antibodies and Liver Kidney microsomal antibodies which are of
diagnostic value for AIH but not specific for the disease since they also occur in 10-15% patients with Viral
hepatitis and other immune mediated diseases.
