Types of DC Generator
Types of DC Generator
SEPARATELY EXCITED
➢ Where the field windings are connected
to a source of supply other than the
armature of its own machine.
➢ Use in special cases such as when a
wide variation in the terminal Pd is
required or when exact control of the
field current is necessary its advantage
lies in requiring a separate source of
direct current.

SELF EXCITED
➢When the field windings receives its
supply from armature of its own
machine and which are subdivided
into
A.) Shunt
B.) Series
C.) Compound Wound Generator
A. SHUNT WOUND GENERATOR

The armature coils and shunt fields

coils are connected in parallel.

the field windings are connected

across or in parallel with the
armature conductors and have the
full voltage of the generator
applied across them
Eg=VL + IaRa Ia = IL + Ish

Ish = ; IL = Pg = EgIa = Eg (IL + Ish)
𝑹𝒔𝒉 𝑽𝑳
B. SERIES WOUND GENERATOR
 The excitation originates in field
winding connected in series with the
armature. So, the flux depends upon
the currents delivered to the load.

 The armature coils and series fields

coils are connected in series.
Ia = Ise = IL
Pg = Eg Ia

E = VL + Ia (Ra +Rse)
C. COMPOUND WOUND GENERATOR

Two methods of connection are

used both having a mixture of
shunt and series windings.
1. LONG SHUNT COMPOUND
GENERATOR

➢The series field coils are

connected in series with the
armature coils while the shunt
field coils are connected across
the series combination.
E = VL + Ia (Ra +Rse) Pg = EgIa
Ise = Ia 𝑽𝑳 𝑷𝑳
Ish = ; IL = Ia = IL + Ish

SHORT SHUNT GENERATOR

 The series field coils are

connected in series with the
load, while the shunt field coils
are connected in parallel with
the armature coils.

Problem 1.

A separately excited generator

running at 1200 rpm supplies 200 A at
125 V to a circuit of constant
resistance. Armature circuit resistance
is 0.10 ohms. Determine the terminal
voltage, when the speed is dropped to
1000 rpm. Assume that the field
current is unaltered.
Diagram No. 1
Solution:
RL = V/I E
2
125 Ia = R +R
RL = = 0.625 ohm a 𝐿
200 120.833
E1 = VL + IaRa Ia= = 166.67𝐴
0.10+0.625
= 125 + 200(0.10)
E1= 145V V2 = 166.67 A (0.625)

E2 = E1 ( )
N1
V2 = 104.166V

Problem 2.
A DC series generator is supplying a
current of 5 A to a series lighting system
through a feeder of total resistance of 1.0
ohm. The terminal voltage is 2500V. The
armature and series field resistance are
respectively 18 ohms and 15 ohms. A 30
ohms diverter resistance is shunted across
the series field. Determine the power
develop in the armature of the generator?
Diagram No. 2
Solution:
Rse(Rd)
Requivalent = Rse+Rd
15(30)
= = 10 ohms
15+30

E = VL + Ia (Ra + Requiv + Rfeeder )

E = 2500 + 5 ( 18 + 10 + 1) = 2645v
Pg = EgIa = 2645 (5)
Pg = 13.225 KW
Problem 3.

A 4 pole shunt connected generator

has a lap connected armature with 728
conductor. The flux per pole is 25mWb. If
the generator supplies 250W, 110
incandescent lamp. The field and the
armature resistance are 110-ohms and
0.25-ohms respectively. Determine the
speed in rpm of the generator.
Solution:
PL 250
IL = V = 110 = 2.273 A
L
VL 110
Ish = = =1A
Rsh 110
Ia = IL + Ish = 2.273 + 1 = 3.273 A
E = VL + IaRa = 110 + 3.273(0.25) = 110.082 v

Problem 4.
A compound dynamo supplies a
load of 20 kW at 400 v through a feeder
having a resistance equal to 0.1 ohm.
The shunt and series field resistances
are 85 ohms and 0.06 ohms
respectively. Determine the total
electromotive force when the generator
is connected shunt. Assume a brush
contact drop of 1V per brush and an
armature resistance of 0.1 ohms.
Diagram No. 3
Solution:
PL 20,000
IL = VL
= 400
= 50 A
Vsh = VL + ILRF = 400 + 50 ( 0.1 ) = 405 v

Vsh 405
Ish = = = 4.764 A
Rsh 85
Ia = IL + Ish = 50 + 4.764 = 54.764 A

E = Vsh + Ia(Ra + Rse) + Vb

E= 405 + 54.764(0.1 + 0.06)+2 = 415.76 V
