Design of Interpole
Commutation Process
Requirement of Interpoles
• To neutralize the effect of armature
reaction
• To produce enough field in the inter polar
gap to overcome the reactance voltage =
(L(di/dt)) or (dφ/dt) due to commutation.
Location Interpole
• Interpole is located at
midway between two
consecutive poles.
• In the case of Generator,
Polarity of the interpole will
be the same as the main pole
just ahead.
• In the case of motor,
Polarity of the interpole will
be the same as the main pole
For Generator For Motor
just behind.
Design of interpole
• Design of interpole winding
• Width of interpole
• Calculation of reactance voltage
Design of Interpole winding
• MMF due to armature reaction,

• AT  (1   ) I Z with compensation winding

Where α = pole arc / pole pitch

• MMF required in inter polar air gap = 800000 Kgip Bgip lgip

• MMF required in inter polar air gap = 800000 Kgip Bgip lgip + ATa
Width of interpole

Wip = {brush thickness + (N’ - 1)

commutator segment pitch}Da/Dc
N’ = number of coil side per layer in
the slot
Da = diameter of armature
Dc = diameter of commutator
Calculation of Reactance voltage

• Average value of reactance voltage = dφ/dt

• φ = MMF * Permeance = MMF * specific
permeance * Length
• So first specific permeance for slot, tooth, and
overhang is required to be calculated.
Specific Permeance of Slot and tooth

Slot Specific permeance Tooth specific permeance

  s  t  s
Reactance voltage
• Flux = mmf per slot * specific permeance * length
  I z Z s L
• Since there are two active coil side per coil, the total
flux link with the coil is
  2 I zZ s L
• Also there are two coil side per slot so that,
Total flux = 4 I z Z s  L
• So, e  d  = 4 I z Z s  L
