GETTING YOUR BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)

PE
Day 3:
What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
It is used to measure body composition by means of height and weight. On the other hand, the World
Health Organization (WHO) states that BMI provides the most useful population-level measure overweight and
obesity. However, this should only be used as general guideline since one cannot solely rely on mathematical
calculation to identify one’s health status.
BMI = Weight (in kilograms)
Height (in meters)2 Example BMI: 44kg
(1.70)2
Solution: Note: multiply first the height by itself and then divide.
= 44
(1.70) 2 = 2.89

= 44 = 15.22
2.89
BMI= 15.22 Underweight
Classifications of BMI:
Underweight = below 18.5
Normal = 18.5- 24.9
Overweight = 25.0- 29.9
Obese = 30 above
