ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT CONSTRUCTION OF MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITY (MRF)
S.Y. 2017-2018Narrative Report YES-O Club Officers and Adviser are very pleased to share with
you ourAccomplishment Report for the Construction of the school’s Materials Recovery Facility
(MRF)for this Calendar Year 2017-2018. Nowadays environmental problems are too big to be
managed by individual persons orindividual countries. In other words, it is an international problem
and that is why (YES-O) islaunched which the environment is of a major concern to wake the
awareness and initiative ofthe students and to help alleviate further damage of the environment.
Within this school year 2017-2018 we implemented the following: 1. Construction of Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF) which is made of trashed iron; 2. Waste segregation which is monitored
daily. It is a distinct practice from resource recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of
consumption of natural resources; 3. Waste segregation from biodegradable and non-biodegradable;
4. Maintenance of the school’s cleanliness; and 5. Actively participation in various community
outreach program.

This report focuses on the YES-O Club’s main objective- to monitor solid wastemanagement and
maintain the cleanliness of the school. But it would not be possible to do suchjob without a strong
and effective support from the school’s administration. It is essential to havea good technical,
administrative and personal support. We are fortunate to conquer all thechallenges that we had
faced for the betterment of the Camptinians. It is our sincere debt ofgratitude to the school
administration for a significant achievement this year. May God bless usall. YES-O CLUB
OFFICERS S.Y. 2017-2018

Planning Stage/Methodologies: 1. The YES-O CLUB Officers and Adviser in cooperation with TLE
(SMAW) Department will create a waste bin design for the segregation of Plastic bottles and Paper;
2. TLE SMAW students will construct the school MRF made of iron and steel to be supervised by a
skilled welder (materials are from the the previous classroom waste bin competition); 3. The
constructed/repaired MRF for Plastic bottles and Paper will be placed in an open area beside SPS
building; 4. Signage, Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for Plastic Bottles and Paper will be done. 5.
This project will adopt an MRF design with basic materials as drawn: MRF for Plastic Bottles and

Day 2-3: Sorting plastic bottles to be sold to a junk shop owner

Joint forces of Science/YES-O/TLE Dept. On the 2nd and 3rd day of MRF construction, a few Grade
10 students after theirclass hours helped in the sorting of plastic bottles. The bottle sorting started at
4:45 in theafternoon and ended at 5:30 with their utmost participation and willing to contribute forthe
school’s cleanliness. This 45-minute activity is in line with the Science 10 lesson:Biodiversity in
which the teacher would like to instill the importance of community aspart of the natural resources
and the proper way of taking care of the environment.

Students in Action Our school has routinely conducted clean up drive. The YES-O Clean-Up Drive
isincluded to the Mandated Programs, projects and activities of the Youth for Environmentin Schools
Organization (YES-O) pursuant to the DepEd Order no. 93. S. 2011. With this, the YES-O club
officers made an action in helping the environment andto contribute to the prevention of global
warming and garbage scattering. The conduct ofthis activity is to awake the youth on how to take
care the environment and make historythat reflects our concern into our environment. Below are

An ecology group urged the participants of the ongoing Brigada Eskwela nationwide to
also spruce up the materials recovery facilities (MRFs) in schools.

MRFs, also known as “ecology centers,” serve as repository for segregated discards
that can be reused or recycled, as well as a place to turn biodegradable discards such
as food and yard waste into fertilizer or soil conditioner.

“The annual pre-school opening makeover naturally focuses on improving the

classrooms and other common areas where pupils spend most of their time,” observed
Ochie Tolentino, Zero Waste Campaigner of the EcoWaste Coalition.
“In this year’s Brigada Eskwela, we hope volunteers will also get assigned to spruce up
the school MRF or to construct one if there is none yet,” she said.

MRFs are generally consist of a redemption area for the recyclables, a composting area
for the biodegradables, an ecology garden and  a display area for recycled or
repurposed items from discards.

Functional MRFs, the group noted, can play a very important role in instilling
environmental consciousness and responsibility among the members of the school
community, particularly on the ecological way of managing wastes.

“By sorting discards into few categories and keeping them clean and segregated at the
MRF, students are taught about the value of practising the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle)
to prevent and reduce waste and conserve resources,” Tolentino said.

“The school can later sell the collected recyclables to junk shops, providing the school
with extra income that can be put to good use such as for school improvement
projects,” she added

“Hopefully, they can bring this learning home and encourage their respective families to
make waste segregation a habit,” she pointed out.

Tolentino underscored the need for schools to have a composting system that will cater
to their needs.

Depending on the volume of waste organics generated and the availability of materials
and space, the school can adopt a practical system for composting their biodegradable
wastes such as food and garden wastes.

“There is no need for fancy composting bins.  You can practically use whatever
container is available to compost your biodegradable discards from broken pails, clay
pots, old drums and rice sacks or through pits and windrows,” she said.

The EcoWaste Coalition reminded school administrators and teachers to actively

promote the implementation of the Department of Education Order No. 5, Series of
2014.

Among other things, the said directive states that "every school shall practice waste
management principles, such as (waste) minimization, specifically resource
conservation and recovery, segregation at source, reduction, recycling, reuse and
composting, in order to promote environmental awareness and action among the
students."

"We look forward to supporting DepEd's efforts under the Duterte administration to
nurture a waste-free and toxic-free learning environment for all Filipino children," the
group said.
