SYSTEM CARE & PRECAUTIONS

PROTECT AGAINST DRYING

Some media, seals, or other components may be damaged by drying. Protect the equipment
from drying by keeping it wet and sealed at all times. If in storage, keep systems in a cool place.

PROTECT AGAINST FREEZING

If the system freezes during operation or storage, irreversible damage may result. Freezing
conditions make many materials to become brittle, and water expands as it freezes. This
combination cracks piping, valve seals, and other components.
PROTECT AGAINST DIRECT SUNLIGHT OR OTHER UV SOURCES
Avoid long-term exposure to direct sunlight or other UV sources. The equipment should be
stored in a shaded location. UV light causes materials to become brittle and susceptible to
breaking.
PROTECT AGAINST HIGH TEMPERATURES OR ABRUPT
VARIATION IN TEMPERATURE
The maximum operating temperature is 104°F (40°C). Temperatures above this can
cause PVC to deform and possibly rupture. Avoid abrupt variations in temperature. Any
temperature variation should be made slowly. Fast temperature transitions can lead to de-
lamination of the constructed materials.
PROTECT AGAINST ROUGH HANDLING OR DROPPING
Mechanical damage, external breakage and/or internal breakage of the equipment
can result if the system is dropped or bumped. Handle with care at all times during
transportation and installation.
PROTECT AGAINST ORGANIC SOLVENTS AND CONCENTRATED ACIDS
Prevent any and all contact of the system with strong solvents, solvents containing chlorine,
or concentrated acids.
Do not use strong solvents or concentrated acids on any plastic parts of the equipment
system. Examples of some solvents to avoid: acetone, methyl acetate (nail polish remover);
hexane (spot removers); turpentine, toluene (paint thinners); dry cleaning solutions,
insecticides.
PROTECT AGAINST ABRASIVE MATERIAL
Materials subject to wear such as valve seals must be protected from abrasive materials
like shavings left in a pipe.
Abrasive materials in contact with these materials can cause irreversible damage. All pipes
must be flushed clean before installing the system. All plastic parts of the equipment
system must be protected from sharp objects like knives, sand paper, or other tools. Cutting
or nicking a plastic part can weaken it and cause a leak. Do not use abrasive cleansers on
any plastic parts.

STAINLESS STEEL CARTRIDGE FILTERS

MODELS
SSC-1 To SSC-600
STAINLESS STEEL FILTER HOUSINGS

CARTRIDGE FILTERS
The Pure Aqua, Inc. SSC line of cartridge filter housings are constructed of all stainless
steel components. They range in size from a single 10” filter cartridge all the way up to a
150x 40” cartridge capacity with maximum flow rates ranging from 6 gpm up to 3,000 gpm.

There are 3 distinct housing styles across the product line. The following pages will cover
the specifications and filter change procedures for each style housing.

Single Filter Housing: SSC-1 thru SSC-3

The SSC-1 thru SSC-3 are single filter housings constructed of 304 Stainless steel. These
housings feature a fixed top with a cartridge housing secured by a threaded collar. The top
portion has either a 3/4” or 1” FNPT inlet and outlet ports. At the base of the filter housing
is a 1/4” twist drain.

Model Number of Cartridge Pipe Size Max. Flow Rate Drain

Number Cartridges Size GPM (LPM) Size
SSC-1 1 10” 3/4” NPT 6 (23) 1/4”

SSC-2 1 20” 3/4” NPT 12 (45) 1/4”

SSC-3 1 30” 3/4” NPT 6 (23) 1/4”

Each filter housing is supplied with a mounting bracket and a collar wrench.

Mounting Bracket

NOTE
The filter housing should always be relived of
internal pressure before attempting to open
Collar Wrench the housing.

Filter Change Intervals

The filter cartridge will need to be replaced once a pressure differential of
15 psi is observed across the filter. If the filter has been in use for more than
30 days, it should be replaced regardless of the pressure differential or how
clean it may appear.

Most types of filter cartridges break down over time. As the filter breaks down,
it loses its filtering capacity and can cause harmful particles to pass through
potentially damaging downstream equipment.

Details on the various types of replacement cartridges for your model SSC can
be found at the end of this manual.

Cartridge Filter Replacement

1
To change the cartridge filter you will need
the collar wrench. The filter housing must be
secured to its bracket when attempting to loosen
the collar .
Drain Port
1. Open the drain valve at the bottom of
the filter housing to bleed off internal
pressure.
2
2. Insert the collar wrench into one of
the side holes on the collar and turn
clockwise as viewed from the top of
the filter.
3. Remove the lower half of the housing
with the collar. Remove the filter and
thoroughly rinse the housing free of
any debris.
4. Inspect the 2 o-rings on the housing
3
lid. Clean and lube the o-rings with
Dow 111 food grade lubricant.
5. Place a new cartridge in the housing.
Remember to remove the plastic
wrapper from the cartridge.
6. Insert the housing onto the lid
taking care not to mar the o-rings.
The housing my need to be pushed 4
upwards with a bit of force while
threading the collar back on. This is
normal as there is a spring seat inside
that helps ensure a sealed fit of the
filter cartridge.
6
7. Thread the collar back on taking care
not to cross-thread it. Use the collar
wrench to tighten the collar.
Do not over tighten.
8. Close the drain valve and resume
operation.

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
There are a few optional accessories available that will enhance filter performance thru
monitoring. Below are listed each accessory along with a description of their typical
application for the SSC Filters

Pressure Differential Monitoring

When operating the SSC Filters it necessary to monitor the pressure difference between the
inlet and outlet of the filter housing. As the cartridge filters become saturated with trapped
dirt particles and debris, the inlet pressure will rise and the outlet pressure will drop. This
difference in pressures across the filter is referred to as the filter pressure differential.

A filter pressure differential of approximately 15 psi indicates a fully saturated filter and is
ready for immediate replacement.

Differential Pressure Gauge

Depending on the application, and your setup, a single pressure differential gauge may be
all that is needed to monitor the filter’s performance status. These types of gauges only
indicate the pressure differential across the filter and not the inlet/outlet pressures.

Pure Aqua, Inc. carries a complete line of differential pressure gauges suited to your
specific requirements.

Differential Pressure Switch w/ Gauge

This differential pressure switch can be wired into the other control systems for status
and alarm monitoring, These switches feature an integrated differential pressure gauge
indicating a 0-30 psi differential scale.

Drain Valves & Air Vent Valves

When performing a filter change on the SSC filters ( SSC-4 thru SSC-600) it is highly
recommended that the filter be drained of the unfiltered water trapped inside the housing
before removing the dirty filters. This will help prevent dirt and debris from passing into the
clean side of the filter housing.

SSC-4 and larger filters have 2 separate drain ports located near their base. The upper
most port is for draining the dirty half of the filter housing. The lower port is for draining
the clean side of the filter housing.

The top of the filter housings also provide a port for a vent valve. This vent allows the water
to drain much easier. Additionally, the vent aids in venting trapped air upon startup after a
filter change.

Pure Aqua, Inc. carries a complete line of high quality, 316 stainless steel ball valves sized
to match the vent and drain ports for all filter models.
