Deflection Behavior in Beams
Basically, the load-deflection relationship of reinforced concrete beams can be
idealized into a trilinier form as shown in Figure 1. This relationship consists of three regions
before the rupture occurs.
Region I: The precast stage, where the structural rods are free of cracks.
Region II: Post-layout stage, where the structural rods experience controlled cracks which are
still acceptable, both in distribution and width.
Region III: Post-serviceability, where the stress in the tensile reinforcement has reached its
yield stress.

Long-term Deflection in pre-stressed girder

Time-dependent factors can increase deflection over time. As a result, the planner
must evaluate the immediate and long-term deflection so that this deflection is guaranteed
not to exceed certain criteria. These time-dependent effects are caused by creep, shrinkage
and other strains. time dependent. These additional strains cause a change in the stress
distribution in the concrete and reinforcing steel so that the curvature of the structural
elements increases for a fixed external load. Additional deflection due to sustained loads
and long-term losses in accordance with the ACI procedure can be calculated using the
multiplier as in equation 2.3 below:

Where ρ 'is the ratio of compressive reinforcement calculated in the field for simple
supported beams and continuous beam and T. beam is the factor taken as 1.0 for 3 months
loading duration, 1.2 for 6 months loading time, and 2.0 for loading period of 5 years or
more.
