Full Lesson Plan Overview
Completely Customizable!
The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows lesson plan is downloadable in PDF and
Word. The Word file is viewable with any PC or Mac and can be further adjusted if you
want to mix questions around and/or add your own headers for things like "Name,"
"Period," and "Date." The Word file offers unlimited customizing options so that you can
teach in the most efficient manner possible. Once you download the file, it is yours to
keep and print for your classroom.
The Lesson Plan Calendars provide daily suggestions about what to teach. They
include detailed descriptions of when to assign reading, homework, in-class work, fun
activities, quizzes, tests and more. Use the entire Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
calendar, or supplement it with your own curriculum ideas. Calendars cover one, two,
four, and eight week units. Determine how long your Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows unit will be, then use one of the calendars provided to plan out your entire
lesson.
Chapter Abstracts
Chapter abstracts are short descriptions of events that occur in each chapter of Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows. They highlight major plot events and detail the
important relationships and characteristics of important characters. The Chapter
Abstracts can be used to review what the students have read, or to prepare the
students for what they will read. Hand the abstracts out in class as a study guide, or use
them as a "key" for a class discussion. They are relatively brief, but can serve to be an
excellent refresher of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for either a student or
teacher.
5
Daily Lessons
This section of the lesson plan contains 30 Daily Lessons. Daily Lessons each have a
specific objective and offer at least three (often more) ways to teach that objective.
Lessons include classroom discussions, group and partner activities, in-class handouts,
individual writing assignments, at least one homework assignment, class participation
exercises and other ways to teach students about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
in a classroom setting. You can combine daily lessons or use the ideas within them to
create your own unique curriculum. They vary greatly from day to day and offer an array
of creative ideas that provide many options for an educator.
Fun Classroom Activities differ from Daily Lessons because they make "fun" a priority.
The 20 enjoyable, interactive classroom activities that are included will help students
understand Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in fun and entertaining ways. Fun
Classroom Activities include group projects, games, critical thinking activities,
brainstorming sessions, writing poems, drawing or sketching, and countless other
creative exercises. Many of the activities encourage students to interact with each other,
be creative and think "outside of the box," and ultimately grasp key concepts from the
text by "doing" rather than simply studying. Fun activities are a great way to keep
students interested and engaged while still providing a deeper understanding of Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows and its themes.
The 60 Short Essay Questions listed in this section require a one to two sentence
answer. They ask students to demonstrate a deeper understanding of Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows by describing what they've read, rather than just recalling it. The
short essay questions evaluate not only whether students have read the material, but
also how well they understand and can apply it. They require more thought than multiple
choice questions, but are shorter than the essay questions.
6
Multiple Choice Questions
The 180 Multiple Choice Questions in this lesson plan will test a student's recall and
understanding of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Use these questions for
quizzes, homework assignments or tests. The questions are broken out into sections,
so they focus on specific chapters within Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This
allows you to test and review the book as you proceed through the unit. Typically, there
are 5-15 questions per chapter, act or section.
Evaluation Forms
Use the Oral Reading Evaluation Form when students are reading aloud in class. Pass
the forms out before you assign reading, so students will know what to expect. You can
use the forms to provide general feedback on audibility, pronunciation, articulation,
expression and rate of speech. You can use this form to grade students, or simply
comment on their progress.
Use the Writing Evaluation Form when you're grading student essays. This will help you
establish uniform criteria for grading essays even though students may be writing about
different aspects of the material. By following this form you will be able to evaluate the
thesis, organization, supporting arguments, paragraph transitions, grammar, spelling,
punctuation, etc. of each student's essay.
Quizzes/Homework Assignments
7
Tests
Use the Test Summary page to determine which pre-made test is most relevant to your
students' learning styles. This lesson plan provides both full unit tests and mid-unit tests.
You can choose from several tests that include differing combinations of multiple choice
questions, short answer questions, short essay questions, full essay questions,
character and object matching, etc. Some of the tests are designed to be more difficult
than others. Some have essay questions, while others are limited to short-response
questions, like multiple choice, matching and short answer questions. If you don't find
the combination of questions that best suits your class, you can also create your own
test on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Daily Lessons
Lesson 1 (from Chapter One, The Dark Lord
Ascending - Two, In Memoriam)
Objective
The genre of a book is important to many people. Some only read mysteries, some only
science fiction, while others only read mainstream novels.
Lesson
1. Homework. Have the students research the genre of teen/child fantasy, writing a
short paper on it. They may answer questions such as: who were early authors (such as
C.S. Lewis with his Narnia Chronicles). How did they influence fiction during their era?
How has the teen/child fantasy genre built upon early editions of it? Give some
examples of parallels between modern fantasy and early fantasy. What are some of the
differences? How does Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows compare to other teen
fantasy novels?
2. Class discussion Have the students identify why this book is teen fantasy and provide
another example of a novel which would fall into this genre, as well as examples of
novels which will not fall into this category. Discuss the differences.
3. Group work. Debate the following statement: Teen fantasy such as Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows can offer much to adult readers also.
4. Class work. In class have students write an essay on why fantasy is popular and
what a reader derives from reading it.
Harry spends the next day reading articles written about his previous headmaster and
hero, Albert Dumbledore. He is disturbed by what he reads.
The objective of this lesson is to look at media and paparazzi both in Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows and in the students' own culture.
37
Lesson
1. In-class writing: Respond to the following question: How reliable do you think the
media is in reporting about a celebrity or political figure?
2. Group work: Debate the following question: The public at large have a right to know
about public figures, whether political figures or entertainment celebrities. Choose
someone to give a five-minute presentation to the entire class about the major
arguments from both sides.
3. Class discussion: After listening to each small group presentation, discuss the
following questions: How much privacy is a public figure entitled to? Should the media
be held more accountable for what they write about public figures? Should Rita Skeeter
be held accountable for any incorrect information she reports about the Dumbledore
family? How can reporting incorrect or incomplete facts about Dumbledore help
Voldemort?
4. Homework: Research the word "paparazzi" and write a one-to-two page journal entry
about what you find and your take on the information.
This book is set in a fantasy world where magic exists. The objective of this lesson is to
look at setting.
Lesson
1. Class discussion. Could this book had been set anywhere? How does the setting
make this a unique story? How does the setting affect the characters? The plot? The
themes? Why is the setting important?
2. Group work. Create a chart comparing the world of magic to the "muggle" world.
3. In-class writing: Students will write a short paper on how the town in which they
reside currently and attend school has shaped their lives.
4. Homework: Write an informal argument and persuasion essay taking the stand that
Harry Potter's world would be either better or worse to live in than the muggle world.
Support your essay with specific examples.
38
Lesson 4 (from Chapter Three, The Dursleys
Departing - Chapter Four, The Seven Potters)
Objective
Who is telling the story? How much do you know about the characters' inner lives as
you read? The objective of this lesson is to look at point of view.
Lesson
1. Class discussion. What different points of view can be used? What does each point
of view entail? Divide the students into groups and assign them each a point of view.
Their aim is to find the advantages and disadvantages of that particular point of view.
After ten or fifteen minutes, compare the students' ideas. Why do they think Rowling
writes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the third person point of view? Does it
limit the story in any way? How do the students think the story would be different if it
was written in the first person from Harry Potter's point of view?
2. Group work. On the board write down all the different points of view that a novelist
uses. For example, first person, second person, third person. Discuss with the students
how each point of view is used before dividing the class into groups and assigning them
each a point of view. The students should then individually choose a short scene in the
book and rewrite it using their assigned point of view. End the lesson by looking at the
students' work and discussing what difference the point of view makes to the meaning
of a story.
3. Homework. The students will write a short story from the third person point of view,
the point of view Rowling uses in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
4. Class presentations. Together, class will write a brief story. In three groups, each
group will write the story into a skit in a different viewpoint and present the skits to the
class.
Description brings the world in a novel to life, giving the reader a sense of location and
time. It grounds the characters into the pretend world of a novel. The objective of this
lesson is to look at description.
39
Lesson
1. Class discussion. Students will discuss the description in Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows and whether they feel it is effective. Consider that the world of Harry

or three descriptions and write why they feel the descriptions are effective or not.
Groups will present these to the class.
2. Homework. Students will write a short description of a scene from their favorite place,
such as the beach, forest, mountains, city, etc. and compare that description with one
from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
3. Class work. Each student should share their favorite piece of detail from another text
they have read this year. What makes this their favorite? How does the author use this
description to enhance the reader's experience of their work? Can a lack of detail also
affect the reader's experience for the good? How?
4. Group work. In groups, have the students come up with a picture of what they think
each character looks like and what they think the setting looks like from the descriptions
in the novel. Groups can compare notes in the class as a whole.

disappeared. The objective of this lesson is to look at the concept of sacrifice.
Lesson
1. In-class writing: In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, many people ultimately die
for their beliefs or in protecting other people. The sacrifice of one's life for a cause or for
another person is the ultimate sacrifice, but there are also other sacrifices. Write a 1-3
page journal entry discussing the different ways one might make sacrifices for the good
of others.
2. Class discussion: Is the act of sacrifice always noble? What about those who give of
their time or energy or life for a cause that is hateful or harmful to others? Why do you
think so many people are willing to risk death to keep Harry Potter alive?
3. Group debate: Debate the following statement: One cannot really become a mature
person without learning the act of self sacrifice.
4. Homework: Write a journal entry about a time you had to make a sacrifice for the
good of others and how it felt.
40
Lesson 7 (from Chapter Six, The Ghoul in Pajamas)
Objective
Harry, Ron, and Hermione begin planning their quest. Dumbledore has left Harry strict
instructions that no one except Ron and Hermione can know what Harry is doing. The
objective of this lesson is to look at the concept of friendship.
Lesson
1. Group work: In small groups, students should talk about their best friend and what
that person means to them. If the student feels comfortable, they should also share how
the friends met and any difficult times the friends may have been through together.
Include in the discussion upon what the group thinks the friendship between Harry, Ron,
and Hermione is based upon.
2. Class discussion: The class can discuss the role and the responsibilities of a friend.
This can be created into a list of the various ways a friend should act and perhaps how
they should not act. List the benefits of friends and the disadvantages of friends. Also,
discuss how many friends one should have, and whether more or less is better. What
about other relationships that you wouldn't consider as "friends?" Are these are
important? Ron and Hermione are going with Harry into potentially very dangerous
situations. What does this say about their friendship?
3. Class debate: Debate the following statement: A good friend would not lead his/her
friend into a dangerous situation.
4. Homework: Students can use a piece of paper and start in the center with their own
name. From that name, they should make branches linking them to their friends. From
their friends, they can continue out until they can't think of any more people who are
connected. How many of these friends are very different from oneself? Discuss one
friendship you have with someone who is very different and why you think the friendship
works.
The trio try to agree where they should go when they leave the Burrow. Harry wants to
go to Godric's Hollow, where his childhood home and parents' graves are. Hermione
thinks that's where Voldemort will be waiting for Harry. The objective of this lesson is to
understand the process of finding consensus.

group decision making.
2. Class lecturer: Invite a person who is in mediation to talk about the concept of
consensus.
3. In-class writing: What process do you and your friends and family use to come to a
consensus when you disagree about a decision that must be made.
4. Group debate: Debate the following statement: Consensus is the best way for a small
group to make a decision.
5. Homework: Discuss the pros and cons of arriving at a course of action for a group
based upon consensus.
Dialogue allows characters in a book to talk to each other. It informs, entertains, and
makes the characters seem real. The objective of this lesson is to look at dialogue.
Lesson
1. Class discussion: Introduce dialogue to the students and discuss how writers use
dialogue in books. Ask the students to choose a character from the book and isolate the
character's speech. They should look at the speech and see what it says about that
character. How does the character speak? What does the character say? Bring the
class back together and discuss what they have found out about dialogue. How does
Rowlings use dialogue in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? Is the dialogue
realistic? Do the students think the dialogue is more about style then characterization?
Do they think almost every word a person speaks is designed to have an effect on the
story? How would dialogue be different in a play as opposed to a novel?
2. Group work: Discuss how dialogue between two characters on a phone would differ
from the same dialogue face to face.
3. Homework: Have the students listen carefully to the dialogue in their houses,
especially when the entire family is together, for example, eating a meal. Have them
write up the dialogue and write how the dialogue shows each person's personality.
4. Class work: Students will chose one scenario from the following and write a dialogue
of the scene: two students discussing an upcoming football game; a student and parent
42
discussing whether the student can go on a trip with a friend; a student and a sibling
talking about a family outing.

think Dumbledore leaves? What sort of legacy do you think Voldemort will leave? Harry
Potter?
2. In-class writing: Discuss what you want to leave as your "legacy" and why.
3. Group work: Break into groups and choose one famous person who has left a
positive legacy and one who has left a negative legacy. Why do you think one would
choose to leave a negative versus a positive legacy? Do you think these two people
thought about what sort of legacy s/he was leaving? Why or why not.
4. Homework: Discuss someone whom you admire who has died and what sort of
legacy that person has left.
Bill and Fleur are getting married in this chapter. They are from different countries and
cultures. The objective of this lesson plan is to look at marriage.
Lesson

2. Guest speaker: Invite a marriage counselor to come in and talk about marriage,
particularly that of marriage of two people from different cultures.
3. Group debate: Debate the following statement: It would be almost impossible to have
a good marriage between a magically gifted person and a person with no magical
abilities.
43
4. Homework: Respond to the guest lecturer or write about how you think marriage
between two magically-gifted people would differ from marriage between two people of
like backgrounds in our "real" world.
Ron's tactless Auntie Muriel is sure that Skeeter is correct in her speculation. Muriel
claims that Alberforth, Albus' brother, broke Albus' nose during the funeral, while
shouting that their sister's death was Albus' fault. Doge knows this part is true. Muriel
also confides that she thinks that Skeeter's source was Bathilda Bagsot, who wrote "A
History of Magic," and was Albus' old friend. The objective of this lesson is to look at the
concept of gossip.
Lesson
1. Class discussion: What is gossip? How can gossip be harmful? Is it just harmful to
the one talked about or also to the one doing the talking? Why do you think some
spiritual paths advice against gossiping? Why do you think people gossip?
2. In-class writing: Write about a time you have been a victim of gossip and how you
responded OR Write about a time you gossiped about someone and you wish you had
not done so.
3. Group debate: Debate the following statement: Gossiping is usually done by people
who are insecure or mean.
4. Homework: Write up a report about the debate from your group and your own
analysis of the debate. What is your response to the debate statement?
Upon hearing the news that the ministry has fallen, the crowd at the wedding panics.
The objective of this lesson is to look at fear and panic.
Lesson
1. Group work: In groups, students will come up with an answer to the following
questions: What is fear? How can it affect our lives? How can one cope with fear? Is the
absence of fear courage? What is the opposite of fear? Is it reasonable to be fearful in
the situation in which the wedding guests find themselves?
44
2. Homework.:Since 9/11 many Americans have felt more fear then before that event.
Have the students write a short essay on what they believe the country has done to face
the fear. What do they see as actions the government has taken to reassure the citizens
that they are as safe as any government can make them? Has those actions reassured
them?
3. Class discussion: Ask each student to write down any fears s/he may feel. Without
putting a name on the paper have them turn in their lists. Read out the lists and put all
the fears on the board, placing a tic mark whenever the same fear comes up. When
finished take the five fears that have the most tic marks and elicit ideas as to how to
overcome the fear or safeguard against the situation surrounding the fear. Discuss
whether the fear(s )that the wedding guests experience is/are on the list. Is Harry a
fearful person? Ron? Hermione?
4. Group work: Have students discuss what various characters in Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows and how fear(s) motivate those people.
Harry finds a "moving" picture that has been ripped in half. In the half of the picture that
is left, he sees himself at one year old, flying around on a toy broomstick with the legs of
his father chasing after him. The objective of this lesson plan is to look at the concept of
family.
Lesson
2. Small group debate: Debate the following statement: A family of choice can be more
important and influential in one's life than a family by blood.
3. In-class writing: In what ways do you think Harry has been impacted by being
orphaned as a toddler and raised in a family that despises him?
45
Lesson 15 (from Chapter Eleven, The Bribe)
Objective
The general state of affairs is bad for anyone who isn't considered pure-blood. The
interviews that they are conducting with Muggle-borns are not fair in the least. They are
simply rounding them all up to ship them to Azkaban. Voldemort wants the world to be
full of pure-bloods, and nothing else. The objective of this lesson plan is to understand
metaphors.
Lesson
1. Homework: (a) Look up the term metaphor and bring a definition and one or two
examples of metaphors to class. (b) Research a little about the Aryan race theory of
Hitler's and its effect on the Jewish people and write a brief synopsis of your research.
2. Group work: Break into small groups and discuss the ways in which Voldemort's
desire for a society of only "purebloods" could be thought of as a metaphor for Hitler's
desire for a super, Aryan race. How are Voldemort and Hitler similar? How about their
vision?
4. Class discussion: What other metaphors have you noticed in Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows? Why do you think an author would use a metaphor to express a
theme or idea?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is set in a fantasy world where magic exists as
well as non-human sentient beings. The objective of this lesson is to understand the
properties of the fantasy world in which this book takes place.

be sure to include such objects as wands, portkeys, and Horocruxes. Assign one group
to list the sentient beings that do not exist in our world and describe each one physically
and psychologically. Assign one group to list and describe the following groups of Death
46
Eaters, Ministry Workers, Order of the Phoenix, and Muggles. Assign one group to list
and describe the cultural differences between our world and that in Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows.
4. Homework: Write a response paper to the following question: Which world would you
rather live in? Would it be yours or the one in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?
Why?
Author Weasley confronts Harry, who Arthur thinks is a wizard named Runcorn, about
turning in Muggle-borns. The objective of this lesson is to look at labels, stereotypes,
prejudice.
Lesson
1. Class discussion: What type of labels are people who are different given in this
society such as freak, spastic, or retard. What effects do the labels have on the
characters' relationships with each other? Do labels create different expectations? Do
you think the Death Eater's prejudice towards "muggles" is justified?
2. Group work: Split the students into small groups and have them create a list of labels
within their own culture. Have them discuss why we label people and what effect it
might have. Compare their labels to ones put on mudbloods and/or muggles. How
similar are they? How different?

group's history and write a paper on the group and the labels that have been applied to
them. Which labels seem accurate? Which seem false and why?
47

Harry over Ron. The objective of this lesson is to look at the concept of jealousy and
expectations people have of others.
Lesson
1. In-class writing: Write a journal entry explaining how jealousy has harmed a
relationship of yours. Or an entry talking about a time someone had unreasonable
expectations of you and how you felt about it.
2. Class discussion: Why do you think the three friends are arguing? Are Ron and
Hermione's expectations of Harry reasonable? Does Harry have unreasonable
expectations for himself? Is Harry solely responsible for defeating Voldemort? How does
Ron's jealousy cause a rift in Ron's relationships with Hermione and Harry?
4. Homework: Analyze Harry, Hermione, and Ron's friendship up to this point and
decide if you think the threesome's friendship is seriously threatened. Be sure to support
your ideas with specific examples.

cloak on and an old woman appears. She knows they are there even though they are
invisible. The lady never speaks, but Hermione and Harry, thinking her to be Bathilda
Bagshot, follow her to her house. It turns out to be a poor decision to trust the woman.
The objective of this lesson is to learn about how decisions are made.
Lesson
1. Homework: Students will research decision making. This should include steps
towards making a decision, how to research a decision, ways to "take the plunge" and

make up your mind, etc. Students will write a paper on decision making including steps
and suggestions. Include in the paper how Harry and Hermione could have used a
better decision-making process in deciding to follow the old lady.
2. Class discussion: What is a decision? What's the best way to make one? How much
knowledge is necessary for most decisions? How good are blind decisions? How does
one decide when all the options seem to be equal? What kind of major decisions have
the students made? How did they turn out? What other decisions have Harry, Ron and
Hermione made in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? On what basis do they make
most of their decisions?

make a decision about the old lady in a logical fashion and write down those steps.
Wherever there is conflict, there are protagonists and antagonists. They are not always
humans and they can be nature, other animals, and ideas. Sometimes it takes some

Hallows and decide upon a symbol that would represent each theme.
5. Group discussion: In groups have the students discuss why Rowlings uses symbols
instead of just discussing the idea. How did the images make the message more
meaningful? Would the images shown represent the same ideas to a person of another
culture? How universal are symbols? Groups will present their ideas to the class.

Short Essay Questions Key
1. Describe the meeting between Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
A meeting of Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters is happening at the opening of the
novel. Professor Snape tells Voldemort that Harry plans on leaving his uncle's house on
the next Saturday at nightfall. Snape also reveals that Harry will be well protected at the
house, which belongs to one of the Order, and he will not be traveling by Floo or
Apperation. Voldemort takes Lucious Malfoy's wand to use on Harry. Throughout the
meeting, there is a body magically suspended above the meeting table. It is the body of
Charity Burbage, who teaches Muggle studies at Hogwarts. Muggle is the term used for
people who are not wizards. Because Charity is an activist for Muggle rights, Voldemort
kills her and then feeds her to his snake, Nagini.
2. What are some things Harry packs as he prepares to leave his Uncle's house?
Harry packs his owl, his broom, his wand, part of an enchanted mirror, the Marauder's
Map and a few other possessions to take with him.
3. Why is it dangerous for Harry to be leaving his uncle's home this time
compared to other times?
Harry is leaving Privet Drive soon, where he has stayed during summers with his
unloving aunt, uncle, and cousin. The protective charm that keeps Harry safe will break
either when he turns seventeen or when he leaves his uncle's house for good,
whichever comes first.
4. What are the articles about that Harry is reading, and why do his reading
disturb him?
Harry spends the next day reading articles written about his previous headmaster and
hero, Albert Dumbledore. He is disturbed by what he reads. He has always felt he knew
his headmaster well, but what he reads leads him to believe that he did not know him as
well as he imagined. This leaves Harry feeling confused and angry.
77
5. How do Harry's escorts plan to confuse the Death Eaters when Harry and the
escorts leave Privet Drive, and what does Harry think of the plan?
Harry's friends announce that in order to throw the Death Eaters off Harry's trail, some
of Harry's friends are going to drink Polyjuice Potion. Polyjuice Potion is activated when
someone's hair is dropped into the liquid. When another person drinks it, he or she
becomes the double for a limited time of the person whose hair is in the potion. Harry
protests this plan, but his friends will not listen.
The guardians are in the most danger, as the Death Eaters are under strict instructions
that Voldemort wants to kill Harry himself. The guardians, therefore, are the older and
more experienced wizards. They are Kingsley, Mad-Eye Moody, Hagrid, Bill, Mr.
Weasley, Tonks, and Lupin. The Harry impersonators are the younger wizards. They are
Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Fleur, and Mundungus, who is the only one present
against his will.
7. How do Mr. Weasley's modifications to the motorcycle that Harry and Hagrid
are riding both help and hinder their escape?
Hagrid tells Harry that Mr. Weasley has added a few special features to the motorcycle,
just in case. As soon as the group has risen into the air, they are met by at least thirty
hooded figures. Almost immediately, the motorcycle is tipped over and Harry loses his
broom. Soon, Harry and Hagrid lose sight of the other Order members, and Hagrid gets
the chance to try out the gadgets that Mr. Weasley has installed. They lose one Death
Eater by the punch of a button that shoots a brick wall out of the tail pipe. There is also
a button that shoots a net out of the tail pipe. The third button is a type of turbo that
accelerates the bike rapidly while shooting dragon flames out of the exhaust. This
proves to be more than the bike and sidecar can take, and the metal begins to break.
Hagrid's attempt to magically repair the bike makes the situation worse, and the sidecar
comes completely apart from the bike. Harry uses his wand to keep the sidecar in the
air, but can not keep it going.
8. What spells does Harry use in fighting, and which one gives him away as being
the "real" Harry?
As Harry is fighting, he sends stunning spells, even though the Death Eaters are
sending killing curses. Then Harry sends the "Expelliarmus" spell. This is what a wizard
78
uses if they don't wish to hurt the other wizard, but wish to disarm him to take his wand.
The Death Eaters know that it is the real Harry because they know Harry is loath to use
a killing spell.
After the crash, Harry tries to wake the unresponsive Hagrid. He does not manage to do
so before he loses consciousness himself. Tonk's parents find the pair and bring them
inside. They begin magically repairing their wounds and regrow Harry's tooth. Harry
wakes and finds that Hagrid is going to be fine.
10. Where do Harry and Hagrid go after recovering from the crash and how do
they get there?
Harry and Hagrid take their leave via a Portkey in the form of a hairbrush. It takes them
to the Burrow, where Mrs. Weasley, Ron's mother, and Ginny, Ron's little sister and
Harry's girlfriend, inform them that they are the only ones to have made it back so far.
11. What advice does Lupin give Harry and what is Harry's response?
Harry discusses with the others how he was discovered during the escape from Privet
Drive. Lupin tells Harry not to let the "expelliarmus" spell become his signature move,
even though it saved him from Voldemort in the past. The time for disarming people has
passed. Harry does not agree. He does not wish to kill.
12. What does Harry see when his connection with Voldemort is opened and what
does Hermione say about Harry being able to see Voldemort?
Harry's scar starts to hurt, and he sees that Voldemort is angry. He is yelling at
Ollivander. Ollivander is a wand maker who had told Voldemort to use another wizard's
wand to overcome the connection between Harry and Voldemort's wand. Harry sees
Voldemort magically torturing Ollivander, and then the connection is over. Hermione
chides Harry because Dumbledore had told him to close the connection between their
minds.
79
13. What do Harry, Ron and Hermione plan and why does this upset Ron's mother
?
Harry, Ron and Hermione begin planning their quest, which will begin after the wedding
of Bill, Ron's older brother, and Fleur. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are dropping out of
Hogwarts to look for Horcruxes. Dumbledore has left Harry strict instructions that no one
except Ron and Hermione can know what Harry is doing. Ron's mother cannot accept
this. She does not want them dropping out of school.
14. How does Ron dress their house ghoul and why?
Ron dresses their house ghoul in his pajamas made the ghoul's hair red, and put
pustules all over the ghoul. When they leave, his parents are going to tell everyone that
Ron has spattergroit, a highly contagious illness. This will hopefully keep people from
thinking that Ron is with Harry, and keep Ron's family out of danger.
The trio try to agree where they should go when they leave the Burrow. Harry wants to
go to Godric's Hollow, where his childhood home and parents' graves are. Hermione,
however, feels that Voldemort will be ready for this.
16. What is a Horocrux and how is one destroyed? Does this present any
problems for the three young people?
A Horocrux is destroyed either by magical fire, which is not presently taught in school, or
by stabbing it with a basilisk fang, or something as destructive, which are rare. There is
only one antidote for basilisk fang. It is phoenix tears, which are very rare. Now the
three face as great a challenge in destroying as in finding and identifying the objects.
17. What does Harry learn when he looks into Voldemort's mind?
Harry looks into Voldemort's mind and learns that Voldemort is searching for someone
that he desperately wants to find. The person is Gregorovitch, whom Voldemort believes
can solve his problems.
80
18. Who appears at Harry's birthday dinner and what does he want?
During Harry's birthday dinner, the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, makes an
appearance. He needs to talk to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, who were of a very few
named with personal bequests in Albus Dumbledore's will, and the only students. The
Ministry has delayed telling the three about the will to look over the possessions. The
ministry is required to turn over all bequests within an allotted time period, unless they
can prove them dangerous. The time period is up.
Dumbledore leaves Ron a Deluminator, which is used to put in and take light out of a
place. To Hermione, he leaves a children's book, "The Tales of Beedle the Bard." To
Harry, he leaves the Snitch that he caught in his first Quidditch game.
Because of the sword, Harry, Hermione, and Ron end up in a heated argument with
Scrimegeour, who burns a hole in Harry's shirt with his wand.
Harry Potter is very famous in the wizarding world. He is known as the boy who lived.
Harry got this name because he and his parents were attacked by Lord Voldemort when
he was just an infant. Harry's mother died protecting Harry, and when Voldemort tried to
kill Harry, the curse rebounded on Voldemort instead. Harry still has a lightening-shaped
scar on his forehead from the incident. Harry is just turning seventeen years old at the
beginning of this book. He has black hair and glasses. After his parents' deaths, Harry
goes to stay with his mother's sister and her husband and son. They do not like Harry,
despise wizards and witches, and make no effort to hide their distaste. They treat Harry
poorly, but become a little more tolerable when forced to do so by certain wizards.
Harry's first real home is at Hogwarts, his school. Because of Harry's first encounter
with Lord Voldemort, there is a connection that Harry has with Voldemort. Harry can see
into Voldemort's mind. When this happens, it is not like he is looking into Voldemort's
thoughts in third person. It is as if he is actually Voldemort himself. Sometimes this
connection is so strong that Harry can not stop it at all. Harry also can not help himself
from saying what Voldemort is saying while these connections are happening.
Whenever the connection to Voldemort's mind opens, or if Voldemort is near, Harry's
scar burns. Sometimes this pain is almost unbearable.

22. Who is Viktor Krum and why does he get upset when he sees Xenophilius
Lovegood?
Viktor Krum is a famous Quidditch player and is attending Bill and Fleur's wedding.

is a symbol that Lovegood is wearing that Krum tells Harry is Grindelwald's sign.
23. Who writes an unflattering book about Albus Dumbledore and what does the
writer say about Dumbledore?
Rita Skeeter writtes a very unflattering book about Dumbledore. This is the source that
tells about Dumbledore's little sister, as well as his involvement with Grindelwald. Ron's
tactless Auntie Muriel is sure that Skeeter is correct in her speculation. Muriel claims
that Alberforth, Albus' brother, broke Albus' nose during the funeral, while shouting that
their sister's death was Albus' fault.
24. What arrives during the reception and what is the message?
During the reception, a Patronus is sent to the wedding by Kingsley Shacklebolt to tell
the wedding guests that the ministry has been taken over and that Scrimgeour has been
killed. The Patronus also says that Death Eaters are on their way.
25. Describe the scene at the Burrow once the Patronus has delivered its news.
Upon hearing the news that the ministry has fallen, the crowd at the wedding panics.
Everyone is looking for loved ones and most are disapperating. The protective barriers
that were placed around the Burrow for Harry's protection have broken. Death Eaters
are everywhere. Ron, Harry, and Hermione find each and apperate into a busy Muggle
street.
26. What happens to Harry, Hermione and Ron as they sit in an empty diner in the
muggle world?
The trio sit down in an empty diner to discuss their plans. Harry continues to wear the
Invisibility cloak, since the Death Eaters are looking him specifically. While there, they
are confronted with two Death Eaters who attack. They stun one, as well as a waitress,
by accident. The other is turned into a statue. They wipe clean the memories of the two
82
Death Eaters and waitress, fix the half-destroyed diner, and then reverse the stunning
and statue spells. They then leave and apperate to Grimmauld Place. They soon get a
Patronus from Mr. Weasley that says "Family safe, do not reply, we are being watched."
27. What two things does Harry find when he goes to Grimmauld Place?
Harry finds a picture that has been ripped in half and the first page of a letter. In the half
of the picture that is left, he sees himself at one year old, flying around on a toy
broomstick, with the legs of his father chasing after him. The page of the letter is from
his mother to his Godfather. It tells him that Bathilda has been talking to her, and that
she has incredible stories about Dumbledore, but she isn't sure how much to believe. It
also says that Dumbledore borrowed the invisibility cloak that Harry's father left him.
28. What does Kreacher relate to the trio about the locket?
Voldemort uses Kreacher to test the locket's hiding place, assuming Kreacher will die
after drinking the poison. Instead of dying, Kreacher comes home and tells Regulus
what happened. Regulaus has Kreacher take him to the lake. At the lake, Regulus
drinks the potion, switches the locket for a fake, and sends the real one back with
Kreacher. He tells Kreacher to destroy the locket but is unable to do so. Mundungus
Fletcher steals the locket from Kreacher.
29. Who arrives at Grimmauld Place and what does he tell the Harry, Hermione,
and Ron?
Remus arrives on the third day, although he is able to come inside since he is a
member of the order. He tells the three that Scrimgeour died protecting Harry's
whereabouts. He brings news of current events and rumors. He also brings a copy of
the "Daily Prophet." Remus also announces that he is expecting a child. He is worried
about how the child will be treated because the Ministry is now against werewolves and
he is half-werewolf.
Kreacher returns with the captured Mundungus. Mundungus tells them that a woman at
the Ministry took the locket in return for not fining him for selling merchandise on the
street. Mundungus does not know the name of the woman, but it is apparent that Harry
83
knows who she is by the description that she looks like a toad.
31. Why does Hermione put the picture of Phineas Nigellus in her handbag?
32. Why are Harry, Hermione and Ron watching the ministry and how do they
finally get into the ministry?
Everyday, Harry, Ron, and Hermione take turns watching the ministry and looking for
the lady who looks like a toad, but they have yet to see her. Most Ministry people use
the Floo Network to get inside, so it is doubtful that they will see her walking into the
building. They have been planning a way to get inside, hoping to get the Horocrux from
the toad-like wizard. Harry decides to go ahead. The next morning, Harry, Ron, and
Hermione use Polyjuice to become duplicates of three different wizards who work in the
ministry. In order to ensure that the real wizards do not show up to work, they make one
sick, gave one a bad nosebleed, and stun one.
33. What does Harry learn and find at Delores Umbridge's office?
Harry finds Umbridge's office and searches it for the locket. While he is in there, he
looks at Arthur Weasley's file. It confirms that all Arthur's movements are being tracked
because Harry has stayed with him in the past. Harry is now being referred to as
"Undesirable No. 1." He also finds the book that Rita Skeeter wrote, "The Life and Lies
of Albus Dumbledore." He does not find the locket, but he does take the magical eye of
Mad-Eye Moody, which had been set in her door. He does not want Mad-Eye's eye
being used in that way, and so he takes it.
34. How do Harry and the others release some of the muggle born people at the
Ministry?
At the trial of muggle-born Mary Cattermole, Harry hears Umbridge lying about where
she got the locket. The lie outrages Harry who stuns Umbridge and Yaxley. Harry and
84
Hermione take the locket, save Mary, and take all of the people waiting for interrogation
with them. Harry tells them all to take their families and go into hiding. He knows that
they will all be imprisoned or killed otherwise.
Voldemort finds Gregorovitch who tells Voldemort that he does not have what Voldemort
is looking for anymore and that it was stolen long ago. Voldemort looks into
Gregorovitch's mind and sees that it was stolen by a young man with golden hair.
Voldemort kills Gregorovitch.
36. What do Harry and Hermione learn about the Sword of Gryffindor?
Hermione takes the portrait of Phineas Nigellus out of her bag and calls him into the
portrait and blindfolds him. Phineas tells them that the last time he saw the Sword of
Gryffindor taken out of its case was when Dumbledore used it to break open a ring.
Harry and Hermione are elated that they now know how to destroy the Horocruxes. The
Sword of Gryffindor contains basilisk venom. Now they need to find out where
Dumbledore hid the real one. It also explains why Dumbledore left Harry the sword.
Hermione agrees with Harry that they should go to Godric's Hollow. They decide to go
there and visit Bathilda Bagshot.
At the Godric's Hollow cemetery, Harry and Hermione put the invisibility cloak on and an
old woman appears, and Hermione and Harry, thinking her to be Bathilda Bagshot,
follow her to her house. At the house, Harry sees a picture of the thief from his visions.
Bathilda wants Harry to come upstairs with her, but won't let Hermione go. It is not until
Harry is alone with the woman that Nagini sheds the body of Bathilda that he is wearing.
He bites Harry. A struggle ensues. Hermione appears upstairs and joins in the fight
against Nagini, who has summoned Voldemort. Harry and Hermione jump out of the
window and apperate.
85
39. Describe how Harry ends up with the Sword of Gryffindor.
As Harry is on lookout and Hermione sleeps, Harry sees a bright silver light appear in
the form of a doe. It walks away from him and Harry follows. The doe leads him to a
frozen pool of water where Harry sees the Sword of Gryffindor at the bottom. Harry, who
is once again wearing the Horocrux, strips off his clothes, breaks the ice, and jumps in
to get it. The locket twists around his neck, suffocating him. He begins to drown when
he is pulled out of the water by Ron, who is responsible for the noises heard earlier. Ron
cuts the locket off Harry's neck. Ron has also pulled out the sword.
Ron finds Harry and Hermione by the Deluminator. He heard her voice come out of it on
Christmas morning. He clicked it on and a ball of light came out of it and went into Ron.
Ron disapperated and it took him to the hill where they were camped. Ron couldn't see
or hear them because of their protective enchantments. He kept doing this every time
they moved, hoping one of them would show themselves.
41. Why does Ron ask Harry to stop saying Voldemort's name out loud?
Ron notices that Hermione and Harry have stopped saying Voldemort's name. Harry
says he doesn't have a problem saying it, but Ron stops him. He tells him that there is a
jinx on the name. Anyone who uses the name is tracked, and protective enchantments
are broken. This is logical because only those people ready and willing to stand up to
Voldemort used the name.
The "Tale of The Three Brothers" is about three brothers who meet Death, who gives
them all one prize. One brother wants a wand more powerful than any in existence. He
brags about it, and is killed for it. One brother wants the power to recall others from the
dead. He receives this in the form of a stone. He brings his fiancé back from the dead,
but she is "sad and cold, separated from him as by a veil." He goes crazy and kills
himself. The third brother wants an invisibility cloak. He is the only one who lives a long
life.
86
43. How do Harry, Ron and Hermione come to be captured by Snatchers?
One night in March, Ron succeeds in tuning in the radio station he was looking for. It is
Potterwatch. They find out that Xenophilius has been put in Azkaban. Hagrid is in hiding
because he threw a "support Harry Potter" party. They hear many voices they recognize
on the program before it ends. Harry is excited after the program ends and forgets
about the jinx on Voldemort's name. He says it, and they are immediately surrounded by
Snatchers.
Dobby, a former house-elf, apperates into the Cellar. Dobby grabs Luna, Dean, and
Ollivander and take them to Bill and Fluer's house and then he is to come back. When
Wormtail is sent to check out the noise from the disapperation, Harry and Ron tackle
him. Wormtail is about to kill Harry, when Harry reminds him that he saved Wormtail's
life in the past. Wormtail shows a brief moment of mercy and is punished for this. Harry
and Ron are unable to stop him from strangling himself to death.
45. Who do Harry, Ron and Hermione question about the Elder wand?
Harry, Ron, and Hermione next question Ollivander about wandlore and about the Elder
Wand in particular. He confirms that the wand is real, but does not know the tale of the
Deathly Hallows. Ollivander tell them everything he knows about the wand, and they
leave him alone.
46. What does Harry figure out about the Elder wand and what does he see
Voldemort do in relation to the Elder wand?
Harry realizes that the wand Dumbledore took from Grindelwald is the Elder Wand, so
Dumbledore is the last owner. Harry then "sees" that Voldemort is at Hogwarts. Harry
does not try to beat him to it. He feels that Dumbledore never wanted him to have it,
only to search for Horocruxes. Harry sees that Voldemort is splitting open Dumbledore's
marble tomb. The wand is inside and Voldemort takes it.
Griphook decides to help Harry break into Gringotts in exchange for the Sword of
87
Gryffindor. He feels that the Sword should belong to a goblin because it is goblin made.
They need this Sword to destroy the Horocruxes, but the sword is the only thing that
Griphook will take for helping with getting inside Gringotts, and they know that it will be
a hopeless task without his help. Harry tells him that he can have the Sword if he helps
him. He does plan to keep his promise, but not until he has destroyed all Horocruxes
with it. This could take years, but he does not tell this to Griphook.
48. How do Harry, Ron and Hermione escape from Gringotts after being
discovered?
As goblin and wizard guards are advancing on Harry, Ron, and Hermione, the dragon
lets out a roar, and sends fire out over the goblins. The wizards retreat and Harry acts.
He breaks the cuffs off the dragon's legs. Harry, Hermione, and Ron climb onto his
back. The exits are too small for the dragon, but he forces his way through, with the
three on his back using their wands to help dig. The dragon makes its way through and
flies away.
49. After jumping off the dragon, what does Harry see with his connection with
Voldemort?
The connection into Voldemort's mind is open. Harry sees that Voldemort has been told
that the cup was taken. He kills all who are present in the room when he hears this
news. Voldemort wonders if it is possible that Harry knows about the Horocruxes. He
will visit his hiding places, Hogwarts last.
50. What does Alberforth Dumbledore tell Harry, Hermione and Ron about his
sister, Ariana?
Alberforth tells Harry, Hermione, and Ron about his sister, Ariana. When she is six, she
is tortured by Muggle boys for doing magic. She is never right after that. She cannot get
rid of her magic nor can she control it. Their father attacks the Muggle boys who did it
and is sent to Azkaban. They keep Ariana at home and tell people she is ill to keep her
from being sent to a mental institution. When she is fourteen, there is an accident, and
she kills her mother. The day Ariana died, Alberforth had told Albus that he had to give
up his plan that he was working on with Grindelwald. Grindelwald tortures Alberforth
with the Cruciatus Curse. Albus tried to stop Grindelwald, and it becomes a three-way
duel. Ariana is killed in the cross-fire.
88
51. In what room do Harry, Hermione, Ron and other allies gather?
Neville leads Harry, Hermione, and Ron through the passages to the Room of
Relinquishment, the room that will give you whatever you ask for, except food, which
Alberforth provides. Many students have gone into hiding Neville. As long as one person
stays in the room, the Carrows cannot get in,because the students have told the room
not to let them in. Many people continue to show up in the room.
52. What does Professor McGonagall and the other teachers do as Harry begins
his search for the diadem?
McGonagall tells Harry that she and the other teachers will secure the school against
Valdemort while Harry searches for the diadem. She is also going to evacuate as many
students as possible through the tunnel that Harry came in through. In the hallway,
Snape confronts McGonagall, but is ganged up on by other teachers. He runs away.
Any students and faculty who are of age and want to are permitted to fight. The rest are
evacuated.
53. What does Harry learn about the diadem as others are fighting the Death
Eaters at Hogwarts?
Since no human still alive has seen the diadem, Harry goes and talks to the ghost of
Ravenclaw tower. She tells him that she stole the diadem from her mother a long time
ago. She hid it in a forest in Albania. She long ago told Tom Riddle, or Voldemort about
it, and he took the diadem. She does not know where he hid it. On his way to find
Hermione and Ron, a memory surfaces for Harry. He remembers putting a wig and an
old tiara on a statue.
54. Describe the encounter with Crabbe, Goyle and Draco and the destruction of
the diadem.
Harry, Ron and Hermione run to the Room of Relinquishment, where Harry asks for the
place where everything is hidden. A struggle begins against Crabbe, Goyle, and Draco.
Crabbe starts a magical fire, but cannot control it. They are all forced to run, Draco
dragging Goyle. The fire begins to form giant beasts made of fire. Harry finds two
broomsticks. He jumps on one, and Ron and Hermione on the other. Harry takes Draco
onto his broom and Ron pulls Goyle onto his. Harry dives and grabs the diadem from
the fire. They escape back into the Room of Relinquishment, but Crabbe does not make
it. Once there, Harry looks at the Diadem, which is bleeding. It breaks into pieces.
89
Crabbe's cursed fire has destroyed it.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione find Voldemort talking to Snape. The snake is being kept in a
floating and enchanted sphere. Voldemort tells Snape that he knows Harry will give
himself up. He asks Snape why the Elder Wand doesn't work for Voldemort as legend
says that it should. Voldemort has decided that it is because he is not the wand's true
master. Voldemort thinks Snape is because Snape killed Dumbledore. Voldemort
believes that the problem will be solved if he kills Snape, and he does so and leaves the
room. Harry goes into the room and shows himself to the dying Snape. Snape tells him
to take his last thoughts, which are given in the form of a silvery substance coming out
of his mouth, ears, and eyes. Hermione hands him a flask and Harry takes it.
56. What does Harry learn about Severius Snape when Harry uses the Pensieve?
Harry alone goes to Snape's office to use the Pensieve to see Snape's last thoughts. He
finds out that Snape was in love with Harry's mother, Lily Evans, when they were just
children. Harry's mother is friends with Snape but does not like that he hangs out with
dark wizards. Snape is very jealous of Harry's father. Once, Snape calls Harry's mother
a Mudblood. She never forgives him. Snape finds out that Voldemort is going to kill the
Potters. He asks Voldemort to spare her and just kill Harry, but Voldemort refuses.
Snape goes to Dumbledore for help. He tells Dumbledore that He will give him anything
in return. After their deaths, Dumbledore tells Snape that the Potters put their trust in the
wrong person. He tells Snape not to let Lily die for no reason. He wants him to help
protect Harry. Snape agrees as long as Dumbledore swears not to tell.
Harry walks into the camp of Death Eaters and gives himself up to Voldemort,
wandless. Voldemort sends a killing curse at Harry and Harry blacks out. He wakes up
in a realm other than that which he just left and sees a small, ugly, and naked child that
is struggling to live. He is repulsed by it and at the same time wants to help it.
58. What does Dumbledore tell Harry about Voldemort and Harry's connection?
Dumbledore tells Harry that Harry and Voldemort have a piece of the other's soul in
90
them. Harry let Voldemort destroy the piece that was Voldemort. Dumbledore explains
to Harry that he is the seventh Horocrux, the one he did not mean to make, but he did
when he took Harry's blood. The wand Harry carried before recognized Voldemort the
night Harry left Privet Drive and used some of Voldemort's own magic against Harry.
59. What does Harry tell Voldemort about Snape and the Elder Wand?
Harry reveals to Voldemort that Snape was only pretending to be on Voldemort's side.
He then tells Voldemort that Snape never possessed the wand because Dumbledore's
death was planned. He tells him that Draco Malfoy had removed the wand from
Dumbledore previously, not realizing what it was, so Draco was the new master. Since
Harry overpowered Draco later, Harry is the true master of the wand with which
Voldemort is dueling.
60. Sum up the status of Harry, Hermione and Ron nineteen years later.
Nineteen years later, Hermione and Ron are married with two children named Rose and

5. Describe Harry Potter.
Whenever the connection to Voldemort's mind opens, or if Voldemort is near, Harry's
scar burns. Sometimes this pain is almost unbearable.

escorts leave Privet Drive, and what does Harry think of the plan?
Harry's friends announce that in order to throw the Death Eaters off Harry's trail, some
of Harry's friends are going to drink Polyjuice Potion. Polyjuice Potion is activated when
someone's hair is dropped into the liquid. When another person drinks it, he or she
becomes the double for a limited time of the person whose hair is in the potion. Harry
protests this plan, but his friends will not listen.
8. Who is Viktor Krum and why does he get upset when he sees Xenophilius
Lovegood?
Viktor Krum is a famous Quidditch player and is attending Bill and Fleur's wedding.
228
Krum sees Xenophilius Lovegood, a local newspaper owner, and gets very upset. There
is a symbol that Lovegood is wearing that Krum tells Harry is Grindelwald's sign.
