Management Functions and Principles

Management is the function of planning, organizing and directing the

resources and activities of an organization for the attainment of its objectives
with effectiveness and economy. Management is not an exact science and
that manager uses discretion and personal judgement based on good sense
and careful evaluation according to criteria which the manager himself
chooses and applies.

There is no set of rules for application in prescribed manner for specific

situations, and that there is no single correct solution to a management
problem. Every managerial option has to be evaluated in terms which are not
always quantifiable. Hence, managerial judgments and decisions may differ
with different managers.

Management principles evolve from the thinking and experience of

management practitioners, they are thus subject to modification with
changing conditions and are not the “eternal veritis” of the natural sciences.
The 10 principles of management will be reviewed as to its applicability as of
the current situation.

What leaders cannot do without pertains to the notion that leadership has a
spiritual dimension when it is transformational in nature for the leader and
the follower. It is emphasized that transformation must begin with the leader.
The five Ps of leadership i.e., purpose, pride, practice, persistence and
perspective are derived the article of Fr. John C. Haughey, S.J. , A Leader’s
Conscience.

Models of Organizational Behavior

The models of organizational behavior will be discussed covering the different

theories and studies of foreign and local authors including articles and
speeches of Filipino employers and distinguished management man of the
year recognized by the Management Association of the Philippines.
