5. MAINTENANCE

The A50 Excitation Controller is completely solid state, apart from configuration rotating switches,
and requires very little maintenance. It is recommended that the AVR is inspected approximately
every 12 months to check for excessive dust build-up, and that all connections are secure.
Excessive quantities of dust should be removed with a soft brush.

In common with generator protection systems it is good practice to annually check the calibration
and the correct operation of all the various functions of the A50. This will involve making tests that
were carried out during commissioning. If required a Service Engineer can be provided by Brush.
It should be noted that some of the functions, such as the limiters and special protections, may
never have needed to operate since the equipment was installed.

6. COMMISSIONING

Commissioning of the excitation system is a complex process that is not limited to the Excitation
Controller. The Excitation Controller is mounted into the excitation cubicle together with all
necessary equipment and is designed to fulfil the specific requirements of individual generators
and individual customers. The following provides a general overview of commissioning steps
commonly applied for excitation systems. These steps are usually performed together with the
setting and activation of individual electrical protection. For further detail, it is necessary to consult
the instruction manual for the particular excitation system and specific contract documents.

6.1. Pre-commissioning Checks

Initial state: finished building adaptation, assembly of cubicle and cabling (external
circuits for connecting the auxiliary supply voltages are prepared), room for excitation
equipment is clean, initial revision report is at disposal.
a) Visual inspection of switchboards
b) Check of protective grounding
c) Check of insulation state
d) Check of auxiliary supply voltages

7.8. HMI Displays Available

There are several displays, each display shows values corresponding to some A50
feature or functional block.

7.9. Trending

The trend display is used to show the value of the selected variable over a
particular time span. The speed of communication is such that the trend display is
unsuitable for accurately displaying generator response, but can be useful for
displaying long term changes. This feature is accessible directly from the HMI main
menu.

7.10. Presets

Presets are accessible directly from the HMI main menu. Here you can set and
change various A50 parameters and constants. There are two lists of presets -
Maintenance presets and Operator presets. ‘Maintenance presets’ is an
exhaustive list of all the presets, whereas the ‘operator presets’ are split into
categories to group the presets accordingly making it easier to find them as
required. (Both lists contain the same presets). The method of changing a particular
preset value is the same in both cases.

7.11. HMI Default Passwords

There are no passwords set.

7.12. Changing A Preset, Setting A Parameter

To change a preset parameter, follow this procedure:

Go to the menu - Presets, there are two lists of presets Operator Preset and
Maintenance Preset as described above.
For example choose Operator Preset - and choose one of the available presets.

7.14. Logging

7.14.1. General

HMI logging features are accessible directly from the main menu. Here are several
logging options.

Figure 24: Logging Options

Note: To see the actual measured value, you can use the standard HMI trending
feature. This chapter describes how to record measured data and events and save
them to the disk as a file.

• Save presets to file - when chosen, a save file dialog box appears. Enter
the path and new filename. All actual presets (operator and maintenance)
will be saved into this file filename.csv.

• Save all registers to file - when chosen, a save file dialog box appears.
Enter the path and new filename. The contents of all HR registers will be
saved into the desired file.

• View event log - displays an event log window (content is automatically

updated when an event occurs). The event history is stored here (power
on’s, logical variable changes, control variable changes etc.). From within
the Event Log window it is possible to export the events to a file in .csv
format.

• Analog data logging - a more complex logging feature which allows the
user to gather a number of data items using automatic or manual
triggering. Sample rate of up to 100 per second is available. See section 8
for more detailed description of this feature.

8. ANALOG DATA LOGGING

The A50 is equipped with the Analog data logging (ADL) facility. This feature is
accessible from the windows HMI through the Logging menu item as shown in
figure 25.

Figure 25: Selecting Analog Data Logging

The Analog Data Logging option allows up to four sets of recordings to be made.
Each set can contain up to eight recorded variables. Recorded data stored in the
A50 memory can be transferred to a file on the user's PC if required. Each sample
of the recorded data is 2 bytes wide and the total memory available for recordings is
32kB.

Recording options can be configured. Data already stored in the A50 memory is
lost when the logging configuration is changed.

8.1. ‘Logging Chart’ Parameters:

Analog logging wizard

This button starts the analog logging wizard. This is further explained in section 8.2.

Log
This is a drop down list that allows the user to select a particular recording from a
number of recordings that might have been stored in the A50 memory. The number
of recordings to be taken is configured through the 'Analog Logging Wizard'. This
drop down list automatically adjusts itself according to the entry made in the former.

Left Hand Scale

This drop down menu allows the user to select which variable is displayed on the
left-hand axis of the graph. The colour of the values corresponds to the colour of
the associated line.

Right Hand Scale

This drop down menu allows the user to select which variable is displayed on the
right-hand axis of the graph. The colour of the values corresponds to the colour of
the associated line.

Status
This indicates the current status of the data logger in obtaining the required
information. There are four stages that the logger goes through, these are:

• Priming – this is when the logger is configuring the A50 and collecting a buffer of
information to use once the trigger has been activated.

• Ready To Record – this appears once priming has finished. The logger is waiting
for user input or an automatic trigger to begin logging the data.

• Receiving Plot – the logger is receiving information from the A50.

• Recording Complete – the logger has collected all the data and the chart is
displayed in the window.

Abort Recording
This button is enabled during the last 2 of the above statuses; it will cancel the
logger’s current task and display the data acquired up to that point.

Send Trigger
This is a manual trigger which activates the data recording. It is usually used if no
automatic trigger has been selected.

Reset All Logs On A50

Clears the buffers in the A50 and primes the buffers according to the existing
configuration. It is not necessary to clear the logs each time new data is required,
as the logger will do this automatically.

Auto Resize Chart

When checked, this option will enable the size of the graph area to be altered by
changing the size of the window itself.

Show Grid
This toggles the grid on and off in the graph area of the window. See 'Save' below.

Load
Loads any previously saved data.

Save
Saves the displayed data as a ‘*.tnd’ file.

Save Config
Saves the current configuration information as *.adld. This can be used for future
testing.

8.2. Analog logging wizard:

Note: After sending new recording configuration to the A50, all previously stored data
records will be lost.

Before proceeding, ensure that the A50 is connected and is communicating with the
HMI.

This feature is a simple way to use the analog data logger. All of the data loggers
features are available through here.
The analog logging wizard comprises of 5 steps.

8.2.1. Analog Logging Wizard Step 1:

When the analog logging wizard is selected the first of five steps, shown in Figure
27, is loaded.

Figure 27: Analog Data Logging Wizard Step 1

In this step the user is given the choice of either creating a new logging
configuration or to use a previously stored configuration.

If 'Choose a previously-saved configuration' is selected, the ‘Browse…’ button

activates and the User is able to browse through the folders to locate the
configuration file. Configuration files are saved as ‘*.adlc’. When a configuration file
is selected, this is automatically sent to the A50 and we jump directly to step 4 of
the logging wizard.

If ‘Create a new logging configuration’ is selected and the ‘Next >’ button is clicked,
step 2 is loaded.

8.2.2. Analog Logging Wizard Step 2:

The analogue logging wizard step 2 allows the user to select variables to be
recorded. Any combination can be selected as required. Also an automatic trigger
can be selected in this window. This is shown in Figure 28.

When the automatic trigger selected here goes from False to True, it activates data
recording. Data recording stops when the ‘sample count after’, specified in step 4,
is reached. The total recording comprises of a number of samples before and a
number of samples after the trigger as specified by ‘Before points’ and ‘After points’
respectively.

Step 3 is loaded when the ‘next >’ button is pressed.

8.2.3. Analog Logging Wizard Step 3:

This step allows the user to select one of the two modes of the analog data logging
as shown in Figure 29. Either a single mode or a multiple mode is possible. The
single mode is designed for testing purposes only and does not allow partitioning of
the buffer for multiple logs. When a trigger is applied the logging stops. To record
another log, the buffer has to be reset using the button provided and a new trigger
has to be sent.

In cyclic mode, the logging buffer is subdivided to allow two, three or four data logs.
It allows manual and automatic triggering. Breaker status changing from closed to
open is available as an automatic trigger in firmware. Data is stored cyclically, i.e.
first log 1 is triggered, then log 2 and then log 3 and then log 4. After this log 1 is
overwritten and then log 2 and then so on. At any given time the four most recently
triggered logs are available.

Press Next > to go to step 4.

8.2.4. Analog Logging Wizard Step 4:

In this step the sample time, number of buffers, total capture time and amount of
data to be captured before and after trigger point are set. Figure 30 shows the
window where Step 4 is configured. Below is a description of the various sections
contained within the window.

8.2.4.1. Timing Constraints Sub Section

This section of the step 4 window allows the user to set the ‘Sample Time’ which is
the rate at which data points are logged in A50 memory. A slider bar is provided to
change the ‘Sample Time’, or a value can be entered directly. Also, number of
buffers can be set. This dictates how many sub-sections the A50 data-logging
memory is to be divided. The minimum setting is one and the maximum is four (in
single mode only 1 can be selected here, in cyclic mode a setting between 2 and 4
is allowed). The recording contained in each sub-section can be downloaded and
viewed on the HMI.

There are also two information windows here which display the following:

1) Maximum no. of samples that can be stored - This term is self explanatory. It
displays the maximum number of samples per data logging buffer that can be
stored.

2) No of samples that will be recorded - this location displays the actual number of
samples that will be stored depending on the logging configuration that is set.

8.2.4.2. Trigger Point Sub Section

This sub section allows the user to select the ‘Total Capture Time’ and to set the
ratio of the amount of data to be captured before and after the trigger is issued.

The total capture time is set in the window of the same name. There are four
buttons ‘<<’, ‘<’, ‘>’ and ‘>>’ that can be used to set the capture time or it is also
possible to directly enter a value by pressing the ‘…’ button.

A movable slider bar is provided to set the ratio of the number of data to be
captured before trigger point to the number of data to be captured after the trigger
point. Also three buttons ‘25%’, ‘50%’ and ‘75%’ are provided to set the ratio to
these pre-set values.

Also present in this section are four displays ‘before points’, ‘after points’, ‘before
time’ and ‘after time’. As their names suggest these display either the length of time
or the number of data points that will be stored before and after the trigger.

When ‘Next >’ is pressed step 5 of the logging wizard is loaded.

8.2.5. Analog Logging Wizard Step 5:

Step 5 of the analog logging wizard is shown in Figure 31.

Figure 31: Analog Data Logging Wizard Step 5

Here the plot settings can be adjusted to manually set the data logger plot. When
this is done and the 'Send' button is pressed, a window appears which confirms that
the configuration has been sent (see Figure 32:).

This step allows the user to save the configuration for later use. If this option is
selected, the user is allowed to select a filename and a path where the file is to be
stored. Once this has been done, the file can be used later by selecting ‘choose
previously saved configuration’ in step 1 (section 8.2.1). Pushing the 'Close...'
button completes the analog data logging configuration. The logger then primes
itself according to the configuration, and sits waiting for a trigger.

9. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE EXCITATION REGULATOR

The excitation regulator consists of a generator terminal voltage regulation loop,

field current regulation loop and circuits for generating the control pulses for the
thyristor rectifier.

9.1. Primary generator terminal voltage regulation loop

In normal “on-load” operation the generator terminal voltage regulation loop has the
characteristics of a Proportional and Integral (PI) regulator. In no-load running of
the generator and during operation of supervisory regulation (automatic
synchroniser, reactive power regulation, power factor regulation), the transfer
function has only the proportional characteristic.

Generator terminal voltage regulation loop consists of:

- reference setting of generator terminal voltage
- actual value of generator terminal voltage corrected by reactive power
- power system stabiliser
- rotor current limiter
- stator current limiter
- underexcitation limiter
- limiter of the ratio of generator terminal voltage to frequency (V / Hz limiter)
- generator terminal voltage limiter
- regulator output limiter

The purpose of the above mentioned facilities is to secure stable operation of the
generator within limits given by the capability diagram of the generator and
respecting a certain time-limited overload.

When the generator breaker is closed and the regulator is operating in normal PI
control mode, the control loop operates on the difference between the reference
voltage setting and actual value of generator terminal voltage corrected by the
reactive power compensation and output signals of all limiters (see section 9.5) and
power system stabiliser processed in the PI regulator with the transfer function:

KA
KA +
s ⋅ TA

The output voltage limiter is located on the output of the PI (or P) voltage regulator.
There are two levels of the limitation adjusting according to the kind of failure which
initialised this limitation.
In the case of the excitation systems with exciter (ac, dc or brushless exciter) the
regulator is equipped with an internal loop of exciter excitation current, this loop has
a proportional regulation characteristic.

The AVR is also equipped with a derivative stabilizing feedback taken from the field
current, which is used especially in cases of brushless systems (feedback taken
from the exciter field current).

modes of regulation (E.g. transfer from the voltage regulation to reactive power

cases it is necessary to recalculate the setpoint of the currently controlled quantity
corresponding to the particular generator operating point to the setpoint of the
quantity which will be controlled after the transfer and at the same time maintaining
the generator operating point unchanged. The value of the constant C066 is given
by variable r37 that can be read by the HMI or Excel debugger.

9.2. Actual value with the reactive power compensation

The actual generator terminal voltage value (program variable Vt) reaches, at the
nominal voltage, the value Vt=100 [%]. The actual generator terminal voltage is
corrected by a signal proportional to reactive power (program variable Q). This
correction signal expressed in % is called reactive power compensation (or QCC or
load compensation). Positive compensation increases generator terminal voltage
when reactive power is rising, negative compensation decreases it.

9.3. Circuits of generator terminal voltage reference setting

The generator terminal voltage reference setting (Vref) is increased or reduced by

the control buttons "RAISE" or "LOWER" in the range between an adjustable
minimum and maximum reference setting. After generator field flashing a continual
adjusting to value set C085 with the speed set in C086 is assured. The reference
setting is further controlled by superior regulations (voltage equaliser, reactive
power regulator, power factor regulator).

9.4. Power system stabiliser

The purpose of a power system stabiliser is to dampen low-frequency swings of the

synchronous generator rotor by way of an automatic voltage regulator. These
electromechanical swings can be divided into three categories:

• Inter-Area Mode: Typical frequency range 0.2 - 0.5 Hz

• Local Mode: Typical frequency range 0.7 - 2.0 Hz
• Inter Unit Mode: Typical frequency range 1.5 - 3.0 Hz

Damping coefficients of synchronous generators are influenced mainly by the

generator design, reactance of connection of the generator to the grid, and the
settings and quality of the excitation system. Generally modulation of generator
excitation can produce transient changes in generator electrical active power, whilst
steady state electrical power remains equal to the mechanical input power.

To supplement damping, a power system stabiliser must produce a component of

electrical torque that opposes changes in rotor speed. Suitable input signals for
damping are electrical active power Pe and shaft speed ω. The A50 dual input
power system stabiliser (each of both selectable types) uses both of these signals,
which are evaluated from CTs and PTs situated on the generator terminals. Rotor
speed is replaced by the frequency of internal generator voltage fc. The magnitude
of internal generator voltage is proportional to the generator field and its position is
tied to the q rotor axis. Therefore shifts in internal voltage phasor position
correspond to the generator rotor position and the derived compensated frequency
fc corresponds to the shaft speed. Derivation of the internal voltage phasor Uc is
depicted graphically in Figure 35.

Integral parts of the PSS2A are diagnostics and control logic modules.
The diagnostic block includes sensor diagnostics and PSS output diagnostics.
When a failure is detected, the PSS status output is changed and the PSS input
into the AVR is disconnected.
• Minimum active power Pmin(C188) – specifies the level of active generator
power for automatic PSS switch ON, below this level the PSS is OFF.
• PSS output diagnostic – evaluates the output from the PSS2A stabilizer.
When the ERROR LEVEL (C190) of the PSS output is overridden for a
time higher than the DELAY (C189) of the PSS output diagnostic, failure is
detected and output of the PSS to the AVR is disconnected.
• Time Ramps for soft switch ON / OFF – to provide soft switch ON/OFF, the
PSS output signal is multiplied by the signal from ramp function, that
increase from 0 to 1 during ton(C191) in the case of PSS switch ON
respectively from 1 to 0 during toff(C192) in the case of PSS switch OFF,
see Fig. 37.

9.4.3. PSS2A -Theory Of Operation

When disturbed by a sudden change in operating conditions, the generator speed ω

and electrical power Pe will vary around their steady state operating values. The
relationship between these quantities can be expressed in a simplified form of the
swing equation. Using per unit power and small deviations in rotor speed, the swing
equation can be expressed as:

dω 1
= (Pm − Pe ) = 1 Pa
dt 2H 2H
Equation 1
where:
Pm [pu] - mechanical power
Pe [pu] - electrical power
Pa [pu] - accelerating power
H [MWs/MVA] - constant of inertia
ω [rad/s] - angular speed of rotor

By applying Laplace transform to Equation 1 and multiplying of both sides of

1
equation with we obtain:
1 + s2 H

p m (s ) p e (s ) s 2 Hω (s )

1 + s2H 1 + s2H 1 + s2H

In a practical power system stabiliser derivations of power and speed are used
instead of actual power and speed. This is to damp oscillations but not to influence
control. Deviations are realized by inserting of the washout filters with the transfer
sTw
function
1 + sTw that eliminate the dc components in both input signals. Phase
shift of the output signal proportional to the accelerating power must be
compensated for phase lag through generator, excitation and power system by two
or three stages lead - lag filters with transfer function (1+sTi) / (1+sTj). The final
structure of the power system stabiliser conforming to IEEE Std. 421.5-1992 is
shown in Figure 37.

9.5.2. Stator current limiter (SCL)

This limiter is implemented as an integral regulator with time delay dependent on

the current increase over the set limit Itm on condition It < ItM according to the
relation:

Tz
  It  2 
Tt = ∫    − 1 dt
0
 Itm  
where:
Itm maximum continuous value of stator current (delayed limiter action)
ItM maximum actual value of stator current (immediate limiter action)
It actual value of stator current
Tz time of the limiter intervention delay (depends on actual stator current
values)
Tt limiter constant which expresses the time of the limiter intervention delay
when value of stator current It = 141% Itm was reached
Itn nominal terminal current

If the stator current limit Itm is exceeded, the delay circuit starts timing and after the
time delay TZ given by the current overloading height, the limiter decreases the
current to the set value Itm.

If the stator current rises above the level of ItM (ItM > Itm), the limiter decreases the
current to the set value ItM without any delay, at the same time the delay circuit
starts to work and after the delay time passes the rotor current is further decreased
to the limit Itm.

Stator current limiter’s action is different in the lagging and leading areas of
capability diagram. The excitation is reduced in the lagging area and excitation is
increased in leading area. If the value of active current exceeds the stator current
limit, the limiter keeps the operating point of the generator at unity power factor
(minimum achievable value of stator current, when excitation regulator is in
operation).

The stator current limiter has the possibility of applying temperature correction of
continuous stator current limit level Itm. The maximum continuous stator current limit
at +15ºC is set by parameter C142. For other temperatures it is possible to use a
correction temperature-time curve, see figure below. This curve is defined by four
points, (C147, C148, C149, C150). Calculation of the actual stator current limit as
adjusted by the correcting coefficient rDF is given below:

Itm = rDF*C142/1000 [0.01%], where 500<rDF<2000

The function of temperature correction is selected by setting z210 in USER.plc file.

when voltage is changing. Maximum continuous stator current limit Itm is corrected

positive polarity. The control deviation is taken from the reactive power Q as the
difference between the calculated UE limit and value of reactive power. The
underexcitation limiter is set as shown in the diagram below:

9.5.4. V/HZ limiter

The V/Hz limiter is implemented as an integral regulator. Its action is delayed. The
delay depends on the actual value V/Hz at a given time as compared to the overflux
limit setting (V/Hz)m as shown in the following relationship:

Tz
 V / Hz 
TV / Hz = 10 ⋅ ∫  − 1dt
0
(V / Hz ) m 
where:

Tz ... time of the limiter intervention delay

V/Hz ... actual value of ratio V/Hz
(V/Hz )m ... maximum continuous ratio V/Hz (delayed limiter action)
TV/Hz ... delay when the limit value (V/Hz )m is exceeded by 10%.

When the limit (V/Hz )m is exceeded and when time delay TZ is spent the V/Hz
limiter operates. It decreases excitation to bring the actual V/Hz ratio within the
allowed limit.

9.5.5. Generator terminal voltage limiter

9.6. Supervisory regulation

The term superior regulation is used when the action of a certain module is to
adjust the voltage reference as opposed to going into the summing junction of the
AVR.

9.6.1. Voltage equaliser

The voltage equaliser is created by the differential circuit which evaluates the
deviation between the generator terminal voltage and the network voltage. This
deviation then affects the change of the generator terminal voltage reference
setting. The trend of the generator reference setting change depends on the height
of the equaliser control deviation, when the absolute value of the deviation is bigger
than 5 %, VREF setting changes with constant trend otherwise depends on the
integral of equaliser control deviation.

9.6.2. Reactive power (Q) regulation and PF regulation

The VAr and PF control loop are superior to the basic voltage control loop. During
PF and VAr control the voltage control loop is in P regulation and the VAr/PF
control loop is operating as an integral controller. VAr or PF deviation affects the
voltage reference setting through the action of the VAr/PF controller – see Figure
51. The operating range of Vref (r00) is limited by C083 (lower limit) and C084
(upper limit). An adjustment to these limits is made to account for the fact that the
voltage control loop is in P control mode and not in PI mode when PF/VAr control is
active. Reaching the lower Vref limit is indicated by setting flag z117 and reaching
the upper limit is indicated by setting flag z114. In the event that the limits of the
capability diagram are exceeded then Vref adjustments in the relevant direction are
disabled (and flag z10D is set) and Vref is adjusted to bring the operating point in a
safe area within the capability diagram limits – see Figure 50 below. The safe
operating area for PF/VAr controller is defined by variable r143 which is set to 3%
from the actual limits.

In this mode of regulation the deviation between the required and the actual value
of reactive power is evaluated and a correction of the generator terminal voltage
reference setting is made (also taking consideration of the limiters). It is used
particularly during operational shut-down of the generator, when regulation to Q=0
is selected.

9.7. Field current regulator

There are two options available for field current control; field current regulation
mode and manual restrictive mode. The user logic can be set to determine which
mode of operation is used when manual mode (current control mode If or Ife) is
selected. This is implemented by the setting of flag z214, which is activated by a
digital input (see 9.7.2 Manual Restrictive Mode)

The field current regulator is P type. When operating in field current (If) control
mode, the regulation loop has its own reference setting of the field current (IfeRef),
which is controlled by the "RAISE" and "LOWER" commands.

When switching to field current control mode a bumpless transfer occurs whereby
IfeRef takes the value of the actual exciter field current (Ife) at the time of the transfer.

Transfer to field current regulation can be initialised by manual selection or by

sensor failure. If sensor failure occurs and the generator is operating on the
network, the limit values of the field current are adjusted so as to prevent the
generator working in the underexcited area and also to prevent exceeding the
maximum rotor current of the generator. If the generator is disconnected from the
network, the generator field current reference setting is set to the value
corresponding to the no-load run.

9.7.1. Underexcitation prevention during loss of voltage feedback and transfer to

field current regulation

This feature is only fully functional if “Manual Restrictive Mode” is NOT ENABLED
(see section 9.7.2 for description of ‘Manual Restrictive Mode’).

If the generator is loaded and voltage sensing failure occurs (e.g. loss of terminal
voltage feedback, z055 = 1) then the AVR transfers regulation from the “terminal
voltage regulation under load” mode (j01 = 5) to the “field current (If or Ife)
regulation under load” mode (j01 = 14). In this case, active power P and reactive
power Q are not known.

The operating point of the generator in terms of the capability diagram is then
derived from the field current (If or Ife). The operating point of the generator is
limited by controlling the field current reference value – see Figure 54.

The maximum field current reference r20 (If_ref) or r40 (Ife_ref) is limited to the
rated field current (through variable r28 or r48 – curve 2-2 in Figure 54) – the value
of rated field current has no specific preset (no Cxx type variable) it is assumed as
simply 1 p.u.

The minimum field current reference is limited to the field current value IF1 (preset
C041) required to achieve cosφ = 1 when Pn and Vtn = 1 (through variable r27 or
r47 – curve 1-1 in Figure 54).

The minimum attainable value of the field current reference is chosen to provide
some clearance from the UEL. Under these conditions, after sensing failure, the
operating point of the generator is transferred from point X to point Y – see Figure
54.

Under special circumstances the curve 1-1 could be shifted more to the
underexcitation area by decreasing of the preset IF1 (C041) but this is not
recommended for normal practice.

If the operating point of the generator is situated inside of the area determined by
curves 1 and 2, then transfer to the field current regulation loop is smooth.

9.7.2. Manual restrictive mode

Manual Restrictive Mode (MRM) is an optional field current regulation mode for use
when the unit is on the network. This mode is available in addition to the
functionality described in 9.7.1. If the MRM is enabled, the minimum field current
reference (curve 1-1 in Figure 54) as described above in 9.7.1 is no longer present.
However, the maximum field current reference (curve 2-2 in Figure 54) is still
present (see Figure 55) and will still limit the operating point accordingly. This mode
is also intended to prevent the generator from being underexcited during the field
current regulation mode when the generator is on the network.

The selection of manual control with MRM is activated by a digital input which sets
flag z214 and transfers the regulation to the state st01=14 (field current regulation
on the network). A set point C123 is used to denote (exciter) field current desired
when P = 0 pu. A second set point C124 is used to denote (exciter) field current
desired when P = 1 pu. A linear interpolation of (exciter) field current Ife=f(P) based
on these two set points is then carried out to give a line (MRM line – see Figure 55).
The working point of the generator (if more leading than MRM setting of UEL) is
moved to a safe area (to the right of the MRM line).

If in manual restrictive mode and if voltage sensing is available:

Deviation of measured reactive power from the MRM limit line is evaluated and if
the limit is exceeded an integral regulator starts to work (integral time constant of
this regulator is in preset C122).
The MRM operates to change the value of the field current reference Ife_Ref
according to the deviation of the actual reactive power from the preset value of
reactive power. The flag z11D is used to determine if the operating point is to the
left (z11D=1) or the right (z11d=0) of the MRM line.
The operating point is moved in pre-set steps until the MRM line is reached. Ife_Ref
will be slightly to the right of the MRM line accounting for the proportional gain.

If in manual mode and voltage sensing is unavailable (sensing error):

If sensing error exists, measurement of the active and reactive power is
unavailable.
If the generator was in a safe area (operating point more lagging than the preset
MRM characteristic) before the sensing failure occurs, its working point remains
unchanged. If the generator operating point was to the left of the preset
characteristic, a safe field current reference (Ife_ref) is calculated using the last
known value of active power (1 second before sensing failure). The operating point
is then moved there in one jump (as opposed to the pre-set steps when sensing is
available). This adjustment of field current reference is done ONCE ONLY, then no
further protection is provided by the regulator. If the active power further changes, it
is up to the operator to manually control the excitation to ensure excitation remains
in the safe operating area. The operators should monitor the excitation level in case
MW levels change. Indications that the regulator is in manual mode and that
sensors have failed are provided.

9.9. Monitor function

The monitor is only used in twin A50 systems. The ‘Monitor’ always runs in the
standby AVR. The monitor is designed to operate when the generator operating
point deviates outside of the AVR limiters (see Figure 56). The monitor setpoints
need to be outside the envelope of the limiters. Only when the limiters fail to control
the generator to the required limits does the monitor activate. The monitor initiates
a smooth transfer from the main AVR to the standby AVR when this occurs.
Returning operation back to the main AVR is possible through the use of the
“monitor reset” function – flag z12F, after fault clearing. To identify the cause of the
fault the relevant flags (z133, z135, z137, z13A, z13C) remain active until the
monitor is reset.

Conditions to enable the Monitor (z13E=1) and Monitor Reset are defined in the
USER.plc file.

Transfer to the standby AVR is initiated by the following monitor functions:

Under Voltage Monitor – UVMon

Over Flux Monitor – V/fMon
Over Voltage Monitor – OVMon
Over Excitation Monitor – OEMon
Under Excitation Monitor – UEMon

9.10. Loss of Sensing Detection

9.10.1. Standard Loss of Sensing Detection

This function evaluates loss of terminal voltage feedback and short circuit condition.
This diagnostic is disabled if Dual VT Loss of Sensing Detection is enabled. See
Fout! Verwijzingsbron niet gevonden..
Activation of the diagnostics is selected by the value of C067 in FCONST.txt as
follows:

C067 = 0 – diagnostics disabled.

C067 = 1 – diagnostics enabled.

The diagnostic is capable of detecting the following conditions:

- difference between terminal voltage sensors measurement in AVR A and AVR B
(∆Vt AVR A / AVR B) > C068
- difference between terminal voltage sensors measurement – filtered value Vt_f
and unfiltered value Vt
Vt_f - Vt > C068
- difference between filtered value terminal current sensing It_f and unfiltered
value It
If It – It_f > C069
- terminal voltage unbalance
- terminal current unbalance
- short circuit
- sensors failure

This feature can detect if an incident is feedback failure or a short circuit. In case of
a short circuit the control needs to continue in the same AVR but it should operate
with the ceiling voltage.

The next excitation set behaviour depends on the selection of time constants C058,
C059 as follows:

C058 < C059 - after a period specified in C058 expires, the AVR transfers control
to field current regulation (Rif / Rife) and after the period specified in C059 expires
control is transferred to the terminal voltage regulation loop (Rut) in the standby
AVR (see Figure 57 below).

9.10.2. Dual VT Loss of Sensing Detection

If this feature is enabled then the standard loss of sensing feature is disabled (see
section 9.7.1).
This feature is enabled in the user logic by setting the flag z1E8. If this flag is set to
0, normal or no diagnostic is active. According to the FCONST and user logic
setting if a sensing failure is evaluated and transfer to field current regulation
needed – the regulation will be transferred to manual control with MRM (see section
9.7.2) or normal manual regulation mode (see sections 9.7 and 9.7.1).
This special diagnostic evaluates only voltage measurement (no current
measurement is taken into account) but in a more sophisticated way. This
diagnostic can be used in a twin channel system and requires use of the network
voltage sensing input and the equaliser voltage sensing inputs. It requires a cross
connection of the voltage measurement signals between the two channels in the
following way:

Let’s name the following;

- main channel A and the second channel B.
- 3 phase voltage sensing of channel A: A-X4:1, A-X4:2, A-X4:3
- voltage sensing for equaliser of channel A: A-X4:10, A-X4:11
- voltage sensing of the network of channel A: A-X4:12, A-X4:13

The 3 phase voltage sensing wires (coming to A-X4:1, A-X4:2, A-X4:3) should be

connected to the channel B voltage sensing inputs as follows:
UA connected to B-X4:10, VA connected to B-X4:11 and B-X4:12, WA connected

The 3 phase voltage sensing wires (coming to B-X4:1, B-X4:2, B-X4:3) should be
split and fused in channel B, let’s name these fused branches UB, VB, WB and
connected to the channel A voltage sensing inputs as follows:
UB connected to A-X4:10, VB connected to A-X4:11 and A-X4:12, WB connected
to A-X4:13.

Let’s name the 3 phase voltage sensing in the active channel VT1 (control VT) and
the additional sensing (coming from the stand-by or following channel) into the
active channel VT2 (checking VT).

All terminal voltage, network voltage and voltage for equalizer voltage
sensing inputs in both channels should be correctly calibrated (set proper
scaling factors ) otherwise there will be measurement misalignment resulting
in incorrect functioning!

The functionality is as follows:

Detection of sensing failure:

If there is a simultaneous drop in the sensing of line volts in both sets of VT (e.g.
during a fault condition) then sensing failure is not evaluated and excitation output
is forced.

Sensing Failure is considered to be true if the following is true:

Excitation has been ON for a time greater than a preset value (usually 1s set in
C008).
AND
a. Voltage of any phase is below 1% of nominal
(see flags eAD_u1_low, eAD_u2_low and eAD_u3_low)
OR
b. If VT 1 (control VT ) < VT 2 (checking VT) by a preset amount (C126).

Note: On a normal start-up residual terminal voltage of > 1% is expected to be

present before application of excitation. Therefore sensing failure will be detected
when, for example, VTs are disconnected or fuses are faulty on start-up.

Sensing Failure will raise Action Flag B03_sens_RI after a delay specified in
preset C058 (usually 50 ms). This causes control to transfer to Ife mode in the
same channel. Then Action Flag B03_sens_R2 is raised after a delay specified in
preset C059 (usually 100ms), which causes control to transfer to the standby
channel if possible.

Delays in C058 of 50ms and C059 of 100ms are preferred as this sets Ife control in
the same channel 50ms after detection of Voltage Sensing Error followed by
transfer to standby channel in voltage control mode a further 50ms later. Transfer
to standby channel is subject to the standby being available and it being in a better
condition than the main channel.

It is possible to alter the behaviour of the AVR by setting times C058 and C059
differently.

If sensing failure occurs during soft start then excitation will switch to the standby
channel if it is healthy, otherwise Ife control is selected on the same channel and
(exciter) field current reference will continue to ramp up until (exciter) field current
reaches the adjustable preset IF0 (C040). IF0 is set to the level required to achieve
full speed no load excitation. The operator can then investigate the cause of VT
Failure and take appropriate action. The excitation will not revert to auto without
operator intervention.

Sensing Mismatch Alarm:

Sensing Mismatch Alarm is to be issued if VT1 (control VT) > VT2 (check VT) (by a
preset amount C126). The operator can then investigate the cause of problem but it
does not influence the excitation.

Voltage Unbalance Warning:

The normalised values of the terminal voltage phase to phase voltages are
compared with each other. If the smallest one and the biggest one differ more than
by a preset amount set in C127, a warning is stored in the event log (history) of the
particular channel (AVR). It has no effect on the excitation.

9.11. Synchronization

The PRISMIC A50 Excitation Controller includes functionality for synchronization of

synchronous generators to power a distribution system. The terminal voltage (by
means of the AVR in the Excitation Controller itself) and speed of the generator (by
means of commands to the Turbine Governor) are automatically regulated in this
mode in order to satisfy conditions necessary for synchronization.

The phase synchronization mode can be set optionally either as upwards

(generator frequency is higher that mains frequency) or downwards (opposition
relationship) or upwards and downwards together.

The task of synchronization is performed by two independent CPUs, located in the

Excitation Controller. The check phaser creates a pass-band round about the ideal
synchronizing moment for the synchronizing command, evaluated by the main
phaser.

The computations of the main synchroniser are carried out in processor ST1. ST1
is accessed via X08 connector. The parameters for the main synchroniser can be
found in FCONST.txt file under X08.

The computations for the check synchroniser are, however, carried out in processor
ST2. ST2 is accessed through port X11. The parameters for check synchroniser
can be found in FCONST.txt file under X11.

The synchronizer is able to synchronize up to four synchronizing points. For this

purpose the equipment allows the use of up to four different sets of parameters. In
the next table are the individual synchronizing points marked SP1 to SP4.

The following parameters are common (in table “comm.”) for all synchronising
points:
- C212 - maximal permissible slip limit
- C213 - maximal permissible difference between net and generator voltage
- C215 - pulse length factor for speed setting commands
- C211 - pulse length factor for terminal voltage setting commands

9.12. Voltage biasing unit

This function is used where several generators are being operated in parallel and it
is required to adjust the operating set point Vref of all the AVR’s simultaneously.
The input is a varied signal from 30% to 100% of 110V AC. This signal is
connected to X4:12,13 of the AVR PRISMIC A50 and it will adjust the generator
voltage by +/- 10%. Zero adjustment occurring at the level C242 [0.01%] of input
voltage (in our case 65% of 110V AC / C242=6500) and the gain C242[0.01%]
should be calculated like this – C241 = 10000*Vref biasing range[%] / input varied
signal range[%] - (in our case C241=10000*20 / 70 = 2857).

Adjustable parameters:

Desig. Param. Value Max Min Table C80 H Reg.

9.13. Rotating rectifier fault diagnostic module

Prismic A50 software includes a rotating rectifier fault diagnostic module. This
module is optional and can be activated in the case of brushless excitation
systems. This module evaluates the contents of third harmonic frequency in exciter
field current. Specific ripple containing third harmonic (150 Hz – 50 Hz systems,
180 Hz – 60 Hz systems) is typical in case of rotating rectifier failure.

This module is configured by using parameters – C474 which enables or disables

the module, and C408 which represents a threshold level of the third harmonic
amplitude (in fact a signal proportional to third harmonic amplitude). Above this
level the first failure condition is evaluated. Parameter C409 represents a minimum
allowed ratio between the measured DC exciter field current level (B02_Ife0) and
the third harmonic signal level (B02_Ife3), if the actual ratio is smaller, the second
failure condition is evaluated. If both conditions are satisfied a timer set to a value
stored in parameter C013 starts timing and after the specified time if both
conditions are still valid a diode failure is evaluated.

B02_diode_flr = (B02_Ife3 > C408) AND (B02_Ife0 < (C409 * B02_Ife3))

Default values: C408 = 70, C409 = 9, C013= 10

Adjustable parameters:

Desig. Param. Value Max Min H Reg.
