Adult Document Guideline 2018

1 Introduction
This document lays down the guidelines for determining the “Adultness” of a Webpage. The primary
objective of Web Adult Relevance work till now has been to isolate Adult Webpages. The reason
being, the Adult Relevance was essentially a binary classification exercise with the intent of
eliminating Adult pages from strict mode and Moderate mode (when the query intent wasn’t clearly
Adult).

(Retired. This is the old treatment for reference only)

Table 1 -– Existing Retired Adult Treatment in Bing Web Vertical

However, such Binary classification force fits all types of Adult pages into one bucket since it is
desirable to filter many of them from Bing SERP especially in Strict Mode. Many pages get left out
since they cannot meet the threshold required for classifying as Adult. This is especially true for
“Racy” documents. For example:

Consider the document

http://www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/positions/g10361015/wedding-night-sex-positions/

While the document does talks about sexual situations and would still not be considered suitable for
young audiences (and hence suitable for filtering in Strict mode), it cannot be bucketed in the same
league as “Porn”. The audience for this doc, isn’t a porn user.

1 Microsoft Confidential
Hence it is essential to identify these documents separately so that we can give a fine-grained
treatment to the users in Moderate mode but maintain the appropriate safety in Strict Mode.

This document builds on the current Document guidelines to define “Racy” Webpages’ definition
clearly. This would enable us to build document, query and ranking features to give the desired fine-
grained control.

2.2 Racy
These pages are typically not suited for a young audience and NSFW. However, they are not
pornographic in nature. The intent of the page however involves Sexualism. But tThe audience is still
Adult.

Prominent sub-categories of Racy include the following:

 Informative Pages on Sexual positions/acts

 Pages that discuss or display (graphic but without explicit imagery) Sexual
Situations/Behaviours
 Pages with Semi-nude and Provocative imagery.
Differentiate between sexualized situations and others to differentiate between Racy and
Mature/Clean pages
 Pages that promote/sell Sensual products & Condoms
 “R” rated movies rated for Strong Sexual Content
 Medical Procedures related to Sexuality with Strong content

2.2.1 Informative Pages on Sexual positions/acts

These pages describe sexual acts/positions, as information, “How Tos”, guides. These pages typically
avoid images or videos but may use sketches to convey the details. The content could still be very
strong and would suit only an Adult Audience. However these pages can be differentiated from
“porn” and the users who seek these pages aren’t necessarily “porn” users.

Examples

http://www.cosmopolitan.com/sex-love/positions/g6018/sex-positions-deep-penetration/

2.2.2 Pages that discuss or display (graphic without explicit imagery) Sexual

These are pages or forums that discuss Sexual situations or Behaviours, their implications. This may

https://www.buzzfeed.com/carolynkylstra/vagina-facts

http://www.girlsaskguys.com/sexual-health/q167398-is-she-slut-or-what

http://flyheight.com/videos/woman-explains-how-much-she-loves-blowjobs

http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/nipple-orgasms-%E2%80%94-are-they-possible

2.2.3 Pages with Semi-nude and Provocative imagery

While these content aren’t typically completely nude, they might still be NSFW. Some of the sub-
categories include see-through lingerie, micro-bikinis, latex costumes etc. Please note Ecommerce
Sites Selling Lingerie / Other Undergarments are NOT Racy as long as the Items sold are not erotic in
Nature . (IF they are erotic they would go to the adult category)

Examples

http://bellazon.org/elizabeth-smith.html

https://www.amiclubwear.com/two-piece-swimsuits.html

http://www.skinbikini.com/home.html

Couple of important distinctions need to be kept in mind:

1. Imagery that include normal bikinis or regular lingerie need not be considered “racy”. While
they may still be provocative in some situations, they may not be considered NSFW and
might be socially accepted. If the intent of the page isn’t sexualism, then don’t consider it as
Racy.
2. Nuances of different cultures – In some cultures the notion of “racy” needs to be interpreted
taking into account what is considered “provocative” accordingly. For instance, in India
market the following would be considered as “racy”

2.2.4 Pages that promote/sell Sensual products & Condoms

These pages promote/sell Sensual products like erotic oils, condoms or pills like Viagra.

Examples

6 Microsoft Confidential
http://www.lingeriediva.com/lotions-and-oils

oil-blend/

pages. This applies only to the content.

Movie / TV Video Aggregator Sites with Thumbnails pointing to such content / Streaming Videos
Sites claiming to show content of this type are also racy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XROLxJNmgoY – Clip from movie Whipped. However this won’t

apply to the Rotten Tomatoes page of the image.

2.2.7 Medical Procedures related to Sexuality with Strong content

Pages related to Medical procedures like “vaginoplasty”, “butt augmentation” sometimes contain
strong content with imagery.

Examples

https://www.realself.com/Butt-augmentation/reviews

sexual incidents.

Regular dating sites focussed on building relationships rather than sexual encounter. This also
includes Chatting sites/rooms dedicated for this purpose, that specifically ban sexual behaviour.

Typical example of this would be Adult/Mature definitions from Urban Dictionary. While this site
would provide definitions of even Adult terms, the intent would not be to promote Sexualism.

2.4 Clean Pages

Webpages not covered under illegal, Adult, Racy and Mature would be considered Clean. Most of
these pages have content that are suitable for all ages. Some Borderline Examples of Clean Pages are

a) Ecommerce Sites selling lingerie with a clear intent to sell these products to Women for day
to day use
(Exception is Erotic Lingerie which is clearly not meant for normal day to day consumption)
b) Social Media Profiles of Non Celebrities with normal photos of beach wear, fitness wear,
(E.g. https://www.instagram.com/p/By11vHBCcDK/) etc.. are clean unless the intent is to
gain media attention
