Revision sheet 2 — Chemical reactions

1. Elements and compounds outcomes:

Introduction: An element is comprised of all the same types of atoms, therefore atoms are the smallest
part of an element. When 2 or more atoms bond it is called a molecule. When two or more different
elements join a compound is formed.

Q2. A) Write the chemical formula for the following compounds

Water: Carbon dioxide: Table salt: Hydrochloric acid:

H20 C02 HCI
NaCl

Hydrogen gas: Oxygen gas:

B) For each of the following indicate the TOTAL number of atoms.

H20: NaCI: H2SO4: Sulfuric Acid O2: Diatomic oxygen

3 gas
C6H12O6: Fructose

The following is a part of periodic table. Use it to answer questions 1-2

1. Use the periodic table above to complete the table below. (5 marks)

Chemical Name Atomic Number Atomic Weight Number of Neutrons

Nitrogen 7 14.007 7
Oxygen 8 32 16
Magnesium 12 24 12
Neon 10 20 10
2. Draw a model of the following:
(i) Atoms of element

(ii) Molecules of an element

(iii) Molecules of a compound

3. Draw a simple diagram of a Boron atom. Label the main sub atomic particles including any charge.

4. Provide a general word equation for each of the following reactions.

a. Neutralisation:

b. acids on carbonates:

5. A student wants to design an experiment to see whether feeding plants fertiliser effects plant growth.
The student wrote the purpose as:

To investigate the effect of fertiliser on plant growth.

The student wrote the following procedure:

1. Place 4 seeds of the same variety into the same size pots with the same soil.
2. Water each pot every day with the same amount of water.
3. Add 1 tablespoon of fertiliser to pot 2, 2 tablespoon of fertiliser to pot 2 and 3 tablespoons of
fertiliser to pot 3 every week. No fertiliser is added to the first pot.
4. Measure the heights of the growing plants each day and record.

a) Identify the following:

Controlled Variables (things that were kept the same):

Independent Variable ( what was changed by the students):

Dependant Variable (what was measured by the students)
