SCENARIO 2: PARALLEL INDEXING, CONNING THROUGH A

TURN, AND EMERGENCY STOP


GENERAL SCENARIO DESCRIPTION:

The containership Corinthian, with a draft of 9.6 meters forward and 10.0 meters aft, is outbound
from Tacoma, transiting in the Northbound Puget Sound Traffic Lane through the Strait of Juan
de Fuca and outbound for sea. You take the watch (1200-1600) as the vessel enters the
Northbound Lane. You are already checked in with vessel traffic “Seattle South” on VHF 14.

For this scenario each individual will prepare the start of a voyage plan which contains three
waypoints. The waypoints will provide courses to steer in the two visible legs of the traffic lane
as per the chart 18474 excerpt. Each individual will plot the waypoints and tracklines on the
chart excerpt, and plan PI lines and a wheel-over point accordingly.

Sea Condition: Swells from the NE at 0.3 feet

MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Read and understand the Coast Pilot and VTS manual for Puget Sound, Tacoma area.
2. Calculate tides for Tacoma, by hand.
3. Conn the vessel through the Northbound Puget Sound Traffic Lane
4. Be prepared to perform an emergency stop maneuver, for practical or drill purposes

DAY ORDERS:

1. Obey all navigation rules and regulations.


2. Follow Master’s standing orders, except where superseded by these orders.
3. Follow the voyage plan and notify me of any deviations
4. Use all available means to ascertain the vessel's position. Make full use of parallel
indexing techniques to assist in maintaining track and wheel-over points for turns.
5. Utilize the Radar/ARPA to identify and track all traffic relevant to your passage.
6. Monitor VHF channels 13 & 14.
7. Keep all logs up to date.
