1 Introduction

The assessment includes an analysis of any of the theories or approaches that have been

considered for language and development. For this purpose, the theory considered behaviorism

that has been discussed based on its application to second language acquisition. Furthermore, a

comparison of the selected theory with the natural approach has also been discussed. The two

theories have been analyzed based on their analysis of the context of a second language

classroom.

2 Discussion

2.1 Introduction to the Selected Theory

Several behaviorists have described language as a behavior that is not only observable but

measurable as well. Behaviorism is mainly concerned with observable behavior or stimulus-

behavioral response in opposition with the internal events an individual is going through such as,

thinking, cognition and emotions. The behaviorism theory is of the view that the use of language

is stimulating, and responses are produced based on the individual's interaction in a particular

environment (Budiman, 2017). B.F Skinner is one of the most influential behaviorists who

promoted the theory based on the belief that the acquisition of language involves the process of

establishing associations. Further discussion, in this regard, has been made considering the

influence of motivation, consequences, and reinforcement along with significant changes in

behavior. Therefore, it can be concluded that behaviors are learned from the environment and

inherited or innate factors have little impact or influence on the behavior of a person (Nor & Ab

Rashid, 2018).
2.2 Application of the Theory to Second Language

Language acquisition involves the development of the ability to speak and understand a

language based on a complex set of symbols and sounds. Besides this, the process of second

language acquisition is more cumulative and is based on the knowledge regarding the first

language. A similar perspective has been studied by the behaviorists in consideration with the

behaviorist learning theory. The programming of an individual’s mind based on the grammatical

apparatus of the first language interferes with the process of smooth acquisition of the second

language (Nor & Ab Rashid, 2018). The strategies of behaviorist theory have been observed to

be valid during the early stages of learning. The behaviorist theory is of the view that the

language learning process is based more on generalizations and conditioning and; therefore, the

obstructions made on the learning impacts the creative process of language learning. For this

reason, it usually takes a long time to master the learning and acquisition of a second language.

An example of second language acquisition has been observed during the development of oral

and academic proficiency among children (Faruj, 2015).
