Title:

Determine the Lint % and Trash % in the given sample of bale cotton and determine cleaning
efficiency of whole Blow room and scutcher machine

Abstract:

In this experiment two tasks were done. Firstly the lint % and trash % was to be determined. And
cleaning efficiency of whole blow room and scutcher machine was to be determined. The lint %
and trash % was determined with the help of Shirley Analyzer. Then cleaning efficiency was
calculated. The result was taken the conclusion was drawn.

Introduction:

Lint: Raw fibers, after ginning is called lint. Cotton fiber after separated from the seed is called
lint.

Lint content is the portion that consists of fiber and is free from trash.

Trash content: The amount of material other than fibers present in sample.

Invisible loss: The things that are not in trash as well as not present in lint are known as
invisible loss. Let’s say due to the moisture removal during passing cotton from Shirley analyzer
the weight of cotton is reduced

Shirley analyzer MK-2: This machine is used to separate out lint and trash from cotton
sample. The principle of this machine is beating the cotton using spikes rolls that separates trash
from cotton. The sample of cotton is fed in the input tray and trash is collected in separate
chamber and lint is collected in separate chamber

Experimental Procedure:
 Firstly, cotton samples were taken from bale and from scutcher.
 Then brought to Shirley analyzer.
 The 100g of bale cotton sample were fed into Shirley analyzer which gave trash and lint.
 For scutcher cotton same process applied
 For efficiency the formula for efficiency used to calculate it
 The result was taken
 Conclusion was drawn

Calculations and results:

For bale cotton:

Total = 100g

Lint = 91.92g Lint percentage =91.92%

Trash = 7.60g Trash percentage = 7.60 %( trash fed)

Invisible loss = 0.48 g Invisible loss% = 0.48%

For lap cotton:

Total = 100g

Lint = 97.04g Lint% = 97.04%

Trash = 2.50 g Trash% = 2.50 %( trash deli)

Invisible loss = 0.46 g Invisible loss% = 0.46 %

Input Invisible
Trash Invisible
sample Lint% Trash% loss
(g) loss%
(g) (g)
For bale 7.60 (trash
100 91.92 7.60 0.48 0.48
cotton fed)
For lap 2.50
100 97.04 2.50 0.46 0.46
cotton (trash deli)

Efficiency of Blow-Room:

trash fed −trashdeli

Formula = x 100
trash fed

7.60−2.5
Efficiency = x 100=67.105%
7.60
Conclusion:
Shirley analyzer is used to find the lint and trash of sample cotton. These parameters helped me
in calculating the cleaning efficiency of blow-room which really affects the other processes of
yarn manufacturing. I found the percentages of lint and trash of bale cotton sample 91.92% and
7.60% respectively. Also the cleaning efficiency of blow-room was 67.1%.
