can also help your child if he/she encounters some difficulties but make
sure it is really your child who does all the required tasks. Finally, just
feel free to contact your child’s teacher if needed.

READINGS
Parts of the Compound Microscope

A microscope is a Mechanical Parts – part of

tool which can help you the compound microscope
see tiny objects and living that is used to support
organisms. It comprises and adjust other parts.
of three major parts 1. Base
based on their functions: 2. body tube
3. coarse adjustment
magnifying, illuminating knob
and mechanical parts. 4. fine adjustment
5. inclination Joint
6. stage
7. stage clip

Illuminating Parts – part

of the microscope which
supplies light and
regulate light towards
the focus specimen.
1. diaphragm
2. stage condenser
3. mirror

Magnifying Parts – part of the compound

microscope that the specimen in focus appears
larger.
1. eyepiece
2. objective lenses

Ocular or Eyepiece

It is a lens that is attached to a draw tube.

Body tube/Draw tube

It is a tube that separates the objective and the

eyepiece and assumes continuous alignment of
the optics.

Coarse Adjustment Knob

It allows the movement of the tube upwards or

downwards.

Fine Adjustment Knob

It is used to bring the specimen into sharp focus

under low power and is used for all focusing
when using high power lenses.

Revolving Nosepiece
It is responsible in holding the objective lenses
(HPO,LPO, scanner). It facilitates the changing of
objectives.

Objectives: HPO, LPO, Oil Immersion

One of the most important parts of a compound

microscope, as they are the lenses closest to the
specimen.

3
Arm

It is a curve shape that supports the body tube, it

is for grasping in holding the microscope in
transporting.

Stage

It is a flat surface where the mounted slide is

placed.

Stage Clip

It holds the glass slide in place.

Mirror

It allows the light to pass through the hole in the

stage and illuminate the specimen.

Inclination Joint

It connects the arm to the base. It helps incline

the microscope for a more comfortable viewing.

Base

It provides support to the microscope.

Diaphragm

It controls the amount of light that passes

through the specimen.

The compound microscope is classified into three
main parts: Mechanical, Illuminating and Magnifying.
The mechanical part comprises of ________________
which holds the objectives and revolving nosepiece in
place. The coarse adjustment knob allows the
movement of the tube upward or downward. On the
other hand, the _____________ brings the specimen into
sharp focus.
In addition, the stage and stage clips ___________
and holds the specimen in place. Further,
_____________ provides _____________ to the compound
microscope while the ______________ is curved shape
used for holding the compound microscope when
transporting. The ______________ supports the
compound microscope when it is in inclined position.
The illuminating part consists of the ___________
which allows light to pass through the diaphragm and
that __________ the amount of light. Further, the
magnifying part comprises of the __________ which is a
lens that attaches to a body tube. The specimens are
magnified by the _________________ which are classified
into Scanner, low power objective, high power objective
and oil immersion.
