Volcanic Eruption:
- A volcanic eruption occurs when magma is released from a volcano. Volcanic eruptions can be
quite calm and effusive, or they can be explosive. Effusive eruptions produce lava flows, while explosive

-Lahar is an Indonesian term that describes a hot or cold mixture of water and rock fragments that
flows down the slopes of a volcano and typically enters a river valley.

-A pyroclastic flow is a dense, fast-moving flow of solidified lava pieces, volcanic ash, and hot gases.

Hot spot:
-An area of abnormally intense active volcanism thought to be underlain by a mantle plume. Many hot

-A hot spot is an area on Earth over a mantle plume or an area under the rocky outer layer of Earth,

Plume:
-Hot buoyant rock rising through the mantle from the core-mantle boundary. Thought by some
