and
Galvo/Mini Fast Scans with Shims
IMPORTANT: When doing the procedures in this document, you must use safe work
practices and wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (for example, Safety
Eyewear) according to your Company's Standard Operating Procedures.

Announcement

Introducing the Mini Fast Scan (MFS) Shim Tool TLUNAC4164 to determine the
quantity and location of shims required to correct the laser path through the fold mirror
during adjustment or replacement of the optical assembly.

The MFS Shim tool should be used during the Fold Mirror adjustment, when the path of
the laser cannot be corrected solely using the Fold Mirror Alignment Tool TL-5726
(1F6569) or (7H5593). Follow the instructions in the Adjustments and Replacement
Guide.

The use of a MFS Shim tool is a selective adjustment.

The MFS Shim Tool, has been designed to work with MFS assemblies SP9J0118 and
SPAB5798 installed in CR 825,850,950,975, Classic, Elite. It will not work with CR 500.

Parts

The service p/n for Galvo and MFS assembly have changed. The new service parts will
include a set of adhesive backed plastic shims. Galvos and MFS without shims will no
longer be available.

List of New Parts

Spare shims are available in Shim Kit, SPAD0144. It is recommended that FE’s retain
any unused shims in their trunk stock.

Background

When replacing a Galvo or Mini Fast Scan assembly (MFS), the beam might be very
close to either the top edge, bottom edge or clipped by the edges of the fold mirror.

The MFS Shim tool shim can be used to “shim” the MFS assembly in the reader to
enable proper centering of the beam on the fold mirror. Galvos are NOT shimmed.

The tool will indicate whether shims are needed, and if so, whether one or two are
required. Shimming will be applied to the top mount or to the two bottom mounts of the
MFS casting.

NOTE: A maximum of two (2) shims are applied per mount of the MFS casting. Shims
should not be applied to the Galvo.

Where to Mount Tool

The tool should be mounted on the same holes as the fold mirror. The larger holes and
slots in the tool are used to mount the tool to the holes in the upper casting for all the
readers with the large aluminum casting assembly. (all readers except Classic/Elite) The
smaller holes and slots in the tool are used for Classic / Elite readers.

Overview of Adjustment

Always follow the complete set of instructions in Adjustments and Replacement Guides.

Tool label

1. Note what zone the beam crosses on the tool label.

2. Looking at the key, determine how many shims are required and where they need
to be placed.
3. After installing the required shims, verify that the beam is in or near the center
zone marked 0.
4. Remove the shim tool, install the fold mirror and continue with beam alignments.
