DR. BRYAN O. DALID,

Medical Center Chief II
THRU: CARLITO U. PILLERIN
Chief Administrative Officer

Sir:

Good day.

This is about the expired UNICEF commodities intended for distribution to Severely Acute Malnourished
(SAM) children. The commodities are therapeutic in nature and at the same time, food for the identified
children.

The Public Health Department received the commodities and started the distribution to the identified
severely acute malnourished children aging 5 years and below within the hospital. The Pediatric
Department as well as the Dietary and Nutrition Department assisted us in the identification,
distribution and rationing of the said commodities.

There were identified recipients, however their number was not enough to consume all the received
therapeutic foods.

We received volumes and boxes of it. However, we had a problem of consuming everything prior to its
expiration. We even addressed the request of the neighboring provinces for their need of the
commodities. We distributed boxes to Davao del Norte, Southern Philippines Medical Center and
Comval Province.

With this, we notified UNICEF and DOH on the issue of the expiration during the Quarter Meeting at
Davao City. They suggested that it can be distributed to MAM Children or the Moderately Acute
Malnourished children, however, we learned that Davao del Sur distribution to MAM children caused
diarrhea, thus, the issue of distributing it to MAM children was not considered.

Again, we called the attention of DOH Nutrition Coordinator and the UNICEF representative about the
issue. This time they suggested to discard any commodities that will reach expiration dates.

The commodities stayed and stored in one of the rooms of Public Health Department because of the
problem on how and where to discard all these. But at this moment, we are informed on the process on
how to discard the products. UNICEF suggested that contents should be removed from the plastic bags
and the should be buried separately.

Attached herewith is the total number of boxes of RUTF, F75 and F100 therapeutic foods and fluids with
the dates of delivery, the number of boxes consumed and distributed.

Respectfully,

DR. LESLIE MATUTINO-CAPUNO, FPSMS, CPS
