What is a test?

 A test is an instrument or a tool to provide a quantitative description of an observed

phenomenon. This is always in a form of score.
 It is a feedback mechanism about the students and the teachers’ performance.
 Testing is an integral part of teaching.
 = the two process (teaching and testing) are complementary
 Most teachers would admit without testing, teaching is incomplete
 A mechanism (Feedback must be timely and specific to be effective)

What is Assessment?

 It refers to the tools, techniques, and procedures for collecting and interpreting information
about what learners can and cannot do.. as a result of the instructional process” (Nunan, 2009)
 “Assessment is a subcomponent of evaluation.” (Nunan, 2009)

 Assessment is more learning focused than evaluation (Wiggins and Mc Tighe, 2006)
 Assessment is the giving and using of feedback against standards to enable improvement and
the meeting of goals. (Wiggins and Mc Tighe, 2006)

What is EVALUATION?
 It is the rendering of a judgment based on the data gathered. (Aquino and Gracia, 1985)
 It is more summative and credential-related.
 In other words, We need NOT give a grade an evaluation to everything we give feedback to.

Remember: Assessment is an integral part of teaching. It may/can happen anytime, throughout,

instruction.
