Removal / Installation
1. Remove the drive belt.
2. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. (Only if hoses or lines have been disconnected. If Not, proceed to the next step)
3. Remove the four A/C compressor bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.
4. Remove the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket bolts and position aside with the hoses attached.
5. Remove the water pump pulley.
6. Remove in the order shown in the figure, referring to Removal Note step 1 and 2 below .
7. Install in the reverse order of removal, referring to Installation Note.
8. Check the ignition timing.

Timing belt:
1. Loosen the belt tensioner pulley assembly spring bolt and the adjustment bolt.
Installation note
Timing belt
1. Align the camshaft pulley with the pointer.
2. Align the crankshaft pulley with the TDC mark on the timing belt inner cover.
3. Install the new timing belt.
4. Release the timing belt tensioner pulley. Rotate the engine one complete revolution and check the camshaft timing.
5. If necessary, adjust the camshaft timing. (Refer to below.)
Adjustment
Checking camshaft timing
Note
- An access plug is provided in the timing belt outer cover so that camshaft timing can be checked without removal of the cover or any other
parts.
1. Remove the access plug from the timing belt outer cover.
2. Rotate the crankshaft so that the No.1 piston is rising on compression stroke.
3. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley, with the TDC mark on the timing belt outer cover.
Caution

- Always turn the engine in the direction of normal rotation (clockwise, as viewed from the front). Back-ward rotation may cause the timing belt
to jump time, due to the arrangement of the belt tensioner.
4. Look through the access hole in the belt cover, to make sure that the timing mark on the cam pulley is lined up with the pointer on the inner belt
cover.
5. Install the belt cover access plug.

3. Remove the bolt holding the crankshaft position sensor in place and pull the sensor assembly free of the dowel pin.
4. Remove the timing belt and inspect it for wear or damage. If the belt is damaged, replace it.
5. Remove the crankshaft pulley hub and belt guide.
6. Position the timing belt pulley to align with the TDC mark, and the camshaft pulley to align with the camshaft timing pointer.
7. Install the timing belt over the timing belt pulley and then counterclockwise over the auxiliary and camshaft pulleys. Align the belt fore and aft on
the sprockets.
8. Loosen the tensioner adjustment bolt to allow the tensioner to move against the belt. If the spring does not have enough tension to move the roller
against the belt (the belt hangs loose), it may be necessary to manually push the roller against the belt and tighten the bolt.
Note
- The spring cannot be used to set belt tension. A wrench must be used on the tension assembly.
- To make sure the belt does not jump time during rotation in step 9, remove one spark plug from each cylinder.
9. Rotate the crankshaft two complete turns in direction of normal rotation (clockwise) to remove the slack from the belt. Tighten the tensioner
adjustment bolt to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 1.9-29.N.m {1.9-2.8 kgf.m, 14-21 ft.lbf)
10. Tighten the spring bolt to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 38-54 N.m {3.9-5.3 kgf.m, 28-39 ft.lbf)
11. Check the alignment of the timing marks.
12. Install the crankshaft belt guide.
13. Install the crankshaft position sensor onto the dowel pin and tighten the two long bolts to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 8-12 N.m {0.8-1.1 kgf.m, 6-8 ft.lbf}
