Chapter 25 the milky way galaxy

1. Since we are located on the left spiral arm of our galaxy in pollution free sky , milky way
looks like faint band of light in sky

2. In a spiral galaxy, globular clusters can be found in regions that are free of interstellar
dust and can be seen at large distances. The globular clusters, molecular clouds, and
atomic hydrogen can be found at almost distinctly he center of the galaxy.

3. About 2% of the total belong to Population I. Population II stars tend to be found in

globular clusters and the nucleus of a galaxy. They tend to be older, less luminous and
cooler than Population I stars. They have fewer heavy elements, either by being older or
being in regions where no heavy-element producing predecessors would be found.

4. Galaxy consists of thin disk, a spherical halo, globular star cluster, nuclear bulge and a
super massive black hole at the center.

5. The most compelling evidence consists of recorded stellar tracks within 1 arcsecond (0.13
light-years) of the galactic center, whose orbital periods and radii indicate the presence of
a central source of gravity having a mass equivalent to more than 4 million Suns, yet
being concentrated within a radius less than 17 light-hours.

6. presence of these element indicate that which star is formed earlier and type of spectra
and brightness of star indicate its position in the galaxy

7. In future our galaxy is going to collide with Andromeda galaxy. Both will merge to form
giant elliptical galaxy.
