Name: Kumar Kartikey Agarwal: Experiment 1: Isothermal Batch Reactor
AIM:
1. To study Non catalytic homogenous reaction in an isothermal batch reactor.
2. To determine the rate constant (k) of a given Isothermal saponification reaction of
ethyl acetate in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.
3. To determine the effect of temperature on the rate constant and further determine the
activation energy.
APPARATUS:
Beakers, conical flasks, burette, measuring cylinder.
CHEMICALS REQUIRED:
1. Distilled Water : 2 liters
2. NaOH Pellets : 10 grams
3. N/10 NaOH : 100 ml
4. N/10 HCL : 100 ml
5. Ethyl acetate : 15 ml
6. Indicator (phenolphthalein) : few drops
DESCRIPTION:
The set up consists of a reactor fitted in a constant temperature water bath. One stirrer is fitted
for mixing the reactants in reactor and other is fitted in water bath to keep the uniform
temperature throughout in the bath. The temperature of bath can be maintained from ambient
to 90 deg C with the help of digital temperature indicator cum controller. Product from the
reactor is analyzed by chemical titration.
OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION:
Universal gas constant R 8.314 J/mole-K
Volume of HCL VHCL 10 ml
Volume of Sample VSAMP 10 ml
Normality of HCL 0.1 N
Normality of NaOH in feed solution N 0.1 N
NaOH
Normality of NaOH used for titration N1 0.1 N
For T=30 ᵒC, slope of XA/(1-XA) vs time, S1 = 0.0081
For T=40 ᵒC, slope of XA/(1-XA) vs time, S2 = 0.0113
For T=50 ᵒC, slope of XA/(1-XA) vs time, S3 = 0.0152
Now, K = Slope/(CA0), where Cao = (N NaOH)/2 = 0.05
SIGNIFICANCE:
For determination of rate constant at different temperature and Activation Energy of
Saponification reaction, these methods are used, which will help in the designing of reactors.
