Hooke’s Law Discussion

DISCUSSION: Hooke's law is a law of physics that states that the force needed to extend or
compress a spring by some distance (x) scales linearly with respect to that distance—that is,
where k is a constant factor characteristic of the spring, and x is small compared to the total
possible deformation of the spring. The proportional constant k is called the spring constant. It is
a measure of the spring's stiffness. When a spring is stretched or compressed, so that its length
changes by an amount x from its equilibrium length, then it exerts a force F = -kx in a direction
towards its equilibrium position.
