The Gifford Pinchot National Forest is conducting outreach to identify


candidates for an exciting and rewarding challenge as a member of the Gifford
Pinchot National Forest Timber Sale Preparation Organization. We are
advertising 2 positions on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The GS-462-
05/06/07 position has a guarantee of 18 pay periods of full time employment
each year. Additional work beyond the18 guaranteed periods may be offered if
a need and financial resources are available. One position in each of the duty
stations listed above will be filled. These are field going positions and will work
across the entire forest. Duties require a valid State driver’s license, up to 75%
travel, and working in all kinds of weather and terrain. Positions are
supervised by the Timber Sale Preparation Forester.

Forest Technician GS-462-05/06/07 Summary of Duties:


Interprets complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate
harvest timber. Brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on
the ground which are inconsistent with the prescription or marking guide.
Develops and drafts timber cruise plans. Applies instructions issued in a
cruise plan. Interprets computer output reports, tables, and statistics to
provide quantity and quality estimates of timber products. Lays out timber sale
boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other
instruction, considering factors such as transportation system, topography,
fuels management, silvicultural objectives, wildlife needs, stream protection
and other related resource considerations. Determines acreage by traverse,
map or aerial photograph methods, or Global Positioning System (GPS).
Interprets aerial photographs for information such as road locations, sale
boundaries, survey monuments, and other features. Drafts sale area maps.

Gifford Pinchot
National Forest

The Gifford Pinchot National Forest is


one of the oldest National Forests in the
United States. Included as part of the Mt
Rainier Forest Reserve in 1893, this area
was set aside as the Columbia National
Forest in 1908, and subsequently
renamed the Gifford Pinchot National
Forest in 1949. Located in southwest
Washington State, Forest Vicinity Map
(printable version). The forest comprises
about 1.4 million acres and includes the
Mount St. Helens National Volcanic
Monument established by Congress in
1982.
