7 RADIO TEACHER: Participation in different sports sets high standards on athletes’ physical skills

and at times it may result to developing an inury. Sport injuiress are injuries that

occur when engaging in sports or exercise.

11 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

12 RADIO TEACHER: When it comes to sport and exercise, the possibility of injury is always

present. (PAUSE) Sports and exercise are good for the body and with proper

precautions, sports injuries may be prevented. But, you can still be susceptible to

injury in certain situations.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: That is why the old saying is definitely true – “Prevention is better than cure”

(PAUSE) Students, it is better to stop something bad from happening than to deal

with it after it has happened. Believe me in that.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: So how can we prevent a sports injury? (PAUSE) Well, learners especially

our student-athlete you have to listen well to this because this is really beneficial

on your part. (PAUSE)

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: The following are some basic steps to prevent sports injury:
First and foremost is to wear Protective Gear. (PAUSE) Protective gear is anything

you wear that helps keep you from getting hurt. The gear you wear depends on the

sport you play. Helmets are the most common protective gear. They protect your

all-important head while you're playing football, hockey, baseball, softball and

biking. (PAUSE)

Other sports require eye protection, mouthguards, pads, wrist, elbow, and knee

guards. And don't forget your feet. Cleats are worn in football, baseball, softball,

and soccer. These shoes have special rubber or plastic points on the soles to help

your feet grip the ground when you run around.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: Second is Warm Up. (PAUSE) It's not a good idea to just bolt on to the field

and start playing. You shouldn't even start stretching until you're a little warmed

up. So take a light jog to get loosened up and ready to play.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: Third is to know the rules of the game. (PAUSE) Just as traffic lights at

intersections help prevent crashes between the many cars and trucks that drive on

the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them —

at least most of the time. It's the same way with sports. (PAUSE)

When players know the rules of the game — what's legal and what's not — fewer

injuries happen. You and the other players know what to expect from each other.

For instance, you know that in soccer you can't come from behind, crash into a

player's legs, and steal the ball. It's legal — and safer — to go after the ball rather

than the player.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: Fourth is to stay hydrated. (PAUSE) Drink water to prevent dehydration, heat

exhaustion, and heat stroke.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: Last is don't play when you're injured. (PAUSE) This is a really important

one. If you love sports, it's tempting to get right back in the game, even after an

injury. But playing when you're hurt — or before an injury has had a chance to

fully heal — is a bad idea. It can lead to an even worse injury, one that might

sideline you for a long time.

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: Now you know you need to know about staying safe. Hopefully, if you

follow rules 1, 2, 3, and 4, you won't need number 5. Or at least not quite as often!

19 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: But then again, when it comes to sport and exercise, the possibility of injury is

always present. (PAUSE) Inflammation and pain often occur after injuries to the

ankle, knee or joint. And the well-known R.I.C.E. Treatment method can help

reduce the swelling, relieve the pain, and promote flexibility and healing.

(PAUSE) In fact, R.I.C.E treatment is a mainstay for sports trainers and other

athletic health experts.

5 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

RADIO TEACHER: R.I.C.E. stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Rest

(PAUSE) You have to rest and protect the injured or sore area. Stop, change,

or take a break from any activity that may be causing your pain or soreness.

(PAUSE)

BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

16 RADIO TEACHER: Next I for Ice. (PAUSE) Cold will reduce pain and swelling. You have

to apply an ice or cold pack right away to prevent or minimize swelling.

Students, do not apply ice directly to the skin. Place a towel over the cold

pack before applying it to the skin.

BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

1 RADIO TEACHER: C is for Compression. (PAUSE) Compression, or wrapping the injured or sore

area with an elastic bandage will help decrease swelling. You have to remember that you

should not wrap it too tightly, because this can cause more swelling below the affected

area.

9 BIZ: MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

10 RADIO TEACHER: And E is for Elevation. Elevate the injured or sore area on pillows

while applying ice and anytime you are sitting or lying down. Try to keep the area at

or above the level of your heart to help minimize swelling.

RADIO TEACHER: And that’s a wrap for our discussion for today. I hope you enjoyed our lesson!

You did great by listening well! That will be all for today’s episode! Don’t forget what

I taught you for it will help you answer the short assessment later!
