*hyper music intro na may nakalagay na “Culture and Gender Influence in Dimensions of
Communication by GRADE 11”*
Narrator: good morning everyone! And welcome back to another episode of the grade 11
students. In (ilang seconds tong lecheng intro) seconds you're about to witness the cringey
acting skills of this batch to showcase you the influence of culture and gender in communication
dimensions.
*countdown*
Narrator: when we talk about verbal and nonverbal dimension in communication, it pertains to
our use of chosen words, expressions, gestures and bodily movement. This can be mirrored
through the culture we grew up with and our gender.
Reem: Oh we’re heading out already po! see you around ma’am, have a nice day po!
(Western Countries)
Ariel: *waves*
Narrator: in the culture of Filipinos they use po and opo to show their respect to the elderly,
they also do the gesture of holding the elder’s hand and pressing it against their forehead also
as a sign of respect. In other countries such as the western ones, they call some of their elders
by their first name.
(GIRLS)
Loria: Good Morning binibi, How’s you crochet, I Hope it turns out great for your ginoo!
(BOYS)
Giana: Songs bro! I Hope you move on, anyways there’s still a lot of fishes in the sea!
*both wave*
Narrator: men communicate in ways they will be deemed as macho and cool while for women it
was engraved to them to act as if they’re fragile and very delicate. But of course, now, norms
are broken. Women can be dominant and assertive. Men can be fragile and shy. Both are
allowed to express themselves and show emotions.
Narrator: when we say oral and written communication in dimension it discusses messages that
are transmitted out loud (orally) and transcript (written) of thoughts, ideas, and feelings.
(Philippines) Christelle: I prepared a long speech for your extravagant day! I hope you like it,
I’ve seen you grow like a blooming and nice lady, of course, you got it from your mom
*laughing effect* since you are 18 already I guess you have been thinking about your future
profession, I hope you do well and strive to be the best Santos in the field of medicine *tawa
konti* for now have the time off your life party a little, go with the flow and of course if your mom
won’t allow you just call me, just kidding! *tawa*
Narrator: In the Filipino culture, they have the habit of making wordy compositions whilst adding
humour to it. On the other hand, other cultures prefer being straight to the point in delivering nor
writing what they want to convey.
(GIRLS) Ariel: OMG is that the letter you’re going to give to Clyden! *Irit*
Johlan: okay fine! Hi Clyden how are you I’ve been wanting to tell you that-- *stop kasi iccut
naman* I will wait for your reply.
*Parehong kinilig*
(BOYS) Marielle: I don’t think that the data you gathered is correct Mr. Leo, it is stated here that
the calculations are invalid to support the whole city with relief goods! *Pasigaw para kunyari
galit*
Kathleen: how can you say that Mr. Martinez if you didn’t even calculate it yourself!
Loria: order in the court! Let us end the briefing here! *May sound na dapat toktok para sa
court*
Narrator: In terms of oral and written communication, women prefer their works to be indirect
and even soft-spoken and men prefer to be straightforward in what they write and say. Of
course, that’s not the case now as we’ve broken the social standards of the society.
Narrator: in times that we have to be formal we put more attention and structure through the
way we communicate. In times that it’s alright being informal in communication, we
communicate with ease and we do it less structurally.
Johlan: Hi Ms. Alghanim I took over time so I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?
Reem: Oh good for you! I hope I get a freebie after you get the check? Just kidding! See you
tomorrow!
Narrator: in the Philippines it’s a custom to treat everyone as a family. May it be officemates,
classmates, and strangers who attend their party.
Narrator: people deem it more comfortable to discuss problems and confide secrets to women
as they perceive them to be more sympathetic than men. Though that may not be the case now.
(GIRLS) Kathleen: What are you smiling at?! Do you have a boyfriend?!
(BOYS)
Christelle: Why are you laughing?! You didn’t even do the chores you just use your phone and
eat!
Narrator: it is common for students to be excited when answering teachers' questions and there
can be times where a student can overshadow someone intentionally. There are also times that
our gestures can be interpreted differently though we may not mean it just because of our
gender.
Narrator: Once again, we are the grade 11 students of AMISD; always willing to help and ready
to the rescue. See you again next time!
