3.- Scope of t e s t s
3,1 The test programme was planned to cover two types of test:

a, b and c are constant coefficients and the best values of a, b and c
have been found i n each case by the method of l e a s t squares,
A typical s e t of r e s u l t s (measurements made on the starboard outer engine
a t take-off) has been examined by f i t t i n g the best quadratic relation by the
method o f l e a s t squares, There is no significant reduction i n the s c a t t e r of
the experimental points and the accuracy of' the t e s t r e s u l t s does no% appear
t o justify the assumption t h a t engine power i s dependent on powers of tempera-
ture and humidity higher than the f i r s t ,

The relationships between the reduction i n brake horse power and the
s p e c i f i c humidity, together with t h e experimental limits of accuracy, a r e
shown by the f u l l l i n e s i n F-e 9,
6.22 For the maximum humidity given above, the reduction i n take-
off power is 9,8 per cent 21,9 per cant of the power i n dry a i r , The difference
between the humidity of the B r i t i s h I s l e s and the world-wide maximum could
cause a power reduction of 8,8 per cent 21,6 per cent, A power reduction of
8,8 per cent corresponds t o a temperature r i s e of 4@C, below f u l l t h r o t t l e
height, so t h a t it is possible f o r humidity changes t o be equal i n importance
with changes i n temperature, It must, however, be emphasized t h a t large
changes i n humidity are encountered much l e s s frequently than large changes
i n temperature, High values of absolute humidity occur only i n the lower l e v e l s
of the atmosphere, i n areas of comparatively small extent and i n c e r t a i n seasons
of the year (Figures 9 and 10) whereas high temperatures e x i s t f o r long periods
over wide areas,
The magnitudes of these two effects on the engines tested are discussed
ia Appendix II and compared with the mean experimental valnes i n Figure 7 and
i n the following table, It w i l l be seen t h a t the measmd e f f e c t i s only
partly accounted f o r i n t h i s way; the difference i s given i n the f i n a l column
of the table.

For the approximate vaiues given on the c h a r t i t has been assumed t h a t
t h e atmospheric pressure a t mean sea l e v e l i s constant and equal t o 1000 mb,
The t a b l e overleaf gives the average vapour pressure and its standard
deviation i n each of the four seasons and hence shows the fluctuations l i k e l y
t o be experienced from day t o day, A measure of the average v a r i a t i o n durin@;
the day is given by the values of the diurnal range, The t a b l e r e f e r s t o a
few t y p i c a l s t a t i o n s with high humidity,
The highest average vapour pressure shown i n the t a b l e i s 31.8 mb. a t
Bahrein i n July with a standard devietiora gf 4,7 mb, If the d i s t r i b u t i o n were
normal then on one occasion i n twenty the vapour pressure would be expected t o
exceed &Leo mb., the correspon6ing s p e c i f i c humidity being 25,9 gm/kg. Thus
since so high a humidity ~ c c u r sonly rarely and only within a limited area, a
value of 25 @/kg may be taken as a convenient figure f o r the maximum s p e c i f i c
humidity,
