PROGRESS REPORT
ME 527

Authors: Marquez, Cyrus Jesu A.; Sestina, Lester Angelo F.

Adviser: Mahinay, Jon Joseph U.
Date: Feb. 4, 2021
Title: Design, Modeling, and Simulation of an irrigation system driven by Solar-Thermal
Stirling Engine: A comparative Study

Note: Write N/A if not applicable

A. For the students

1. Summary of work done so far
The proponents have completed the design of the pump system. Each subsystem
canvassed, starting from the stirling engine, battery, inverter, etc., was used in the design
process. The piping system simulation was conducted in Pipe Flow Expert, wherein the
results were used for the mathematical modeling. Mathematical modeling is still in the
works as the proponents faced difficulties. The economic part of the study is already in
completion, where additional interpretation is currently being made.

2. Discussion of any new problems encountered

The results of the experiment currently do not meet the objective. The designed pump
system did not yield an increased 3% overall efficiency over Diesel Engine. The
proponents are still working on any possible methods to achieve this objective.

3. Report on any new results

The proponents are currently working on the second law efficiency of the pump system.
Performing exergy analysis may give desirable results than the first.

4. Report on relevant new developments elsewhere

N/A

5. Outline of any changes to the plan of research (chapter by chapter)

 The proponents added a new related study to be used as literature for Chapter II.
 The proponents added more equations in the methodology that was used during the
conduct of the experiment.

6. Proposed timetable for remainder of the research, including planned submission date

With in the deadline period.

7. Remaining research questions unanswered
N/A

8. Other problems, comments, requirements, etc.

The proponents are still exploring the concept of exergy analysis and its application to the
study. The ROI is still incomplete as the proponents are looking for actual prices of the
subsystems in the market.

B. For the adviser/mentor

1. Is the student making satisfactory progress? (Y/N)

Yes
2. Are the current plan and timetable for writing-up feasible? (Y/N)
Yes
3. How many chapters of the thesis have been written?
3 chapters, as chapter 4 is still under development.
4. Are there any new developments that are cause for concern?
Mathematical modeling regarding exergy analysis
5. Is the student likely to be able to complete the project study within the required time? If
not, what action should be taken? In particular, should the student be allowed to
continue?
Yes, they are around 65% finished which includes some minor revisions.
6. Any other comments, on student or supervisor?
N/A
