What are the positive effects (advantages) and negative effects (disadvantages)

of Hydroponics?

1. No Soil Involved
 Since Hydroponic farming involves growing crops
without soil, it is an ideal option for anyone who
has
limited accessibility to land.
2. Make better use of space and location
 Because all that plants need are provided and
maintained in a system, you can grow in your house or
bedrooms as long as you have some spaces.
3. Climate control
 Like in greenhouses, hydroponic growers can have total control over the
climate - temperature, humidity, light intensification, the composition of the air.
4. Hydroponics is water-saving
 Plants grown hydroponically can use only 10% of water compared to field-
grown ones
5. Effective use of nutrients
 In Hydroponics, you have a 100% control of the nutrients (foods) that plants
need. Before planting, growers can check what plants require and the specific
amounts of nutrients needed at particular stages and mix them with water
accordingly.
6. pH control of the solution
 All of the minerals are contained in the water. That means you can measure
and adjust the pH levels of your water mixture much more easily compared to
the soils. That ensures the optimal nutrients uptake for plants.
7. Better growth rate
 No chemical weed or pest control products are needed when operating a
hydroponic system.
8. No weeds
 If you have grown in the soil, you will understand how irritating weeds cause
to your garden. It's one of the most time-consuming tasks for gardeners - till,
plow, hoe, and so on.
9. Less use of insecticide, and herbicides
 Since you are using no soils and while the weeds, pests, and plant diseases
are heavily reduced, there are fewer chemicals used. This helps you grow
cleaner and healthier foods.

1. A Hydroponic garden requires your time and

commitment
2. Putting together a hydroponic system isn’t cheap.
3. Certain plants cannot be grown with hydroponics
4. Longer return on investment
5. Production is limited compared to field conditions

6. Water and electricity risks

 In a Hydroponic system, mostly you use water and electricity. Beware of
electricity in a combination of water in close proximity. Always put safety first
when working with the water systems and electric equipment, especially in
commercial greenhouses.
7. Growing a hydroponic garden demands technical expertise.
 High level of expertise is required. A hydroponic system requires extensive
technical knowledge and training in order to operate.
8. Hydroponic systems are vulnerable to power outages. In the event of a
power outage that outlasts your generators you will be manually watering
your garden.
9. If a disease appears, all plants in the system will be affected.
Activities:
Direction: Put in Column A if the statement is considered to be a
Positive effect of Hydroponics. Put X in Column B if the statement is a
Negative effect of Hydroponics.
Difficult Activities

Column A Column B
(Positive Positive effects and Negative effects of Hydroponics (Negative
Effect) Effect)
1. Less water is lost through evaporation and runoff
2. Soil is not required for hydroponics
3. Certain plants either take up too much space, or cannot
thrive without soil and are unsuitable for hydroponics.
4. Less use of insecticide, and herbicides
5. You are using electricity to manage the whole system. So
suppose you do not take preliminary actions for a power
outage, the system will stop working immediately, and
plants may dry out quickly and will die in several hours.
6. Experiences and technical knowledge
7. Hydroponic growers can have total control over the
climate - temperature, humidity, light intensification, the
composition of the air.
8. All of the minerals are contained in the water. That means
you can measure and adjust the pH levels of your water
mixture much more easily compared to the soils.
9. Make better use of space and location
10. Diseases and pests may spread quickly.

Direction: Decide whether the following statement is true or false. For those
which are false, cross out the incorrect words and write a correction in the
space underneath it.
Difficult Activities
