This Supplementary Learning Module ( SLeM ) is written with you in

sentences in the past perfect aspect; and

After taking up the module on present perfect continuous aspect, this

module contains a lesson on the use of past perfect simple aspect of verb.
Like what you have learned in the present perfect continuous aspect, this
aspect will also teach how to make two ideas or actions into one sentence
only. Do you believe? Well, see it for yourself!
The following is a discussion on the use of present perfect aspect of
verb, study it very well.

Let us have Paulo’s story as an example.

Yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning, Paulo already answered his Filipino module. After a
while, his sister asked him to help her.

There are two actions that happened yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning-
the answering of the Filipino module and the asking of Paulo’s s sister for a
help. Between these two actions, the answering of module was done first (at 10
o’clock) before the sister asked for a help (maybe a minute or two after 10 o’clock).
Now, there is another and even better way to tell the two actions that both
happened in the past and that is through the use of the past perfect simple
aspect of verb. In this way, there will be only one sentence. Observe carefully
the label of each part of the new sentence:

time expression/signal in the past subject past perfect verb
a. Yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning, Paulo had answered his Filipino module
before his sister asked him to help her.
time clause helping verb main verb in
signal word noun verb in past participle form
of the time clause simple past form

As you see, the subject Paulo is followed by the first verb ’had answered’ which is in
the past perfect aspect form. It is made up of the helping verb had and a main verb
‘answered’ in the past participle form. The second verb is ‘asked’ and it is in the simple past
form. It is within the time clause ‘before his sister asked him to help her’.
In addition, past perfect aspect uses a time clause like before his sister asked him to
help her, where before is the signal word or first word of the clause, and this is followed
by the noun sister and a verb asked plus other words.
That sentence tells that the action of answering the module had been
completely done first before the action of asking help took place or happened.

That sentence can also be written in another two ways:

b. Paulo had answered his Filipino module before his sister asked him to help her
yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning. Here, the time signal comes at the end part of the
sentence.
c. Before his sister asked him to help her, Paulo had answered his Filipino module
yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning. Here, the time clause comes first and the time signal
is put at the last part of the sentence. A comma (,) is used after the time clause.

Aside from before as a signal word of a time clause, past perfect simple
aspect may also use when. Look at the examples below:
d. Yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning, Paulo had answered his Filipino module when
his sister asked him to help her.
Or:
e. When his sister asked him to help her, Paulo had answered his Filipino module.
yesterday at 10 o’clock in the morning.

As a summary, remember that the past perfect simple aspect of verb is used
to tell an action that had been done or completed before another action
happened. Its verb is formed by using the helping verb had plus the past
participle of the main verb. Also, it uses both a time signal and a time clause.
A time signal maybe yesterday, a week ago or last night; a time clause may start
with before or when.
Here are the three (3) language patterns in writing sentences using the past
perfect aspect of verb:
singular/plural subject + had + main verb in past participle form + other words + before/when + noun/pronoun
noun/pronoun + simple past form + other words + time signal in the past

time signal in the past + singular/plural subject + had + main verb in past participle form +
other words + before/when + noun/pronoun + verb in simple past form + other words
+ verb in simple past form + other words
before/when + noun/pronoun + verb in simple past form + other words + time signal in the past + singular/plura
singular/plural subject + had + main verb in past participle form + other words
