How can NIHL be prevented?

Understand its causes and
treatments

We hear noises every day in our surroundings, such as television and radio signals,
home appliances, and traffic. Usually, these sounds are at safe thresholds and do
not harm our hearing. Yet sounds can be harmful when they are too distracting,
whether for a brief moment or when they are both loud and long-lasting.
These sounds in the inner ear may affect delicate tissues and cause hearing
damage caused by noise.

NIHL can be immediate, or impacting others can take a long time. It can be
temporary or permanent, and it can involve one ear or both ears.

Exposure to damaging noise can happen at any age. People of all ages, including
children, teens, working adults, and older persons, will build Noise-Induced Hearing
Loss.
What are the Causes of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?

NIHL can be exacerbated by a one-time exposure to an extreme "impulse" sound,

such as an earthquake, or by repeated exposure to loud sounds, such as noise
created in a woodworking shop, for an extended period of time.

 The leisure habits that place you at risk for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
include the following:
 Shooting targets.
 Riding snowmobiles.
 Listening with earbuds to MP3 players at high volume
 Playing musical instruments in a band, playing.
 Going to noisy concerts.

How Does Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Affect You?

 When you are exposed to loud noise for a prolonged time, you will slowly
begin to lose your hearing. You might not notice it, or once they become
more noticeable, you might disregard hearing loss signs, and the effect from
noise exposure is usually gradual.
 Sounds may seem distorted or muffled with time
 You might find it impossible to hear other voices as they talk or have to turn
up the volume on the TV.
 The impairment from Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, coupled with aging, can
lead to hearing loss that is so severe that you need hearing aids to magnify
the sounds around you to help you understand, talk, and participate more
actively in daily activities.

A temporary hearing loss that disappears 16 to 48 hours later is usually caused by
