Assignment #4

Explain: In Do’s and don’ts in gender sensitivity, which one you are in favor with and not in
favor of? Why?

Before anything else, I will define gender sensitivity first. It is a way to generate respect
for the individual regardless of sex. Gender sensitivity is not about pitting women against men.
In school, it promotes equality for men and women by allowing men and women to view what is
stereotypical of and reasonable for their gender. Therefore, we, as teachers are in a position to
teach children about gender sensitization through how they conduct their classroom and interact
with their students.
But in the real-life situation, it is still a problem that exist in education. That is why, as
teachers we must be aware in anything we say, do, teach, and even in giving advice to those
students we encounter every day. And I think, we can understand the meaning of gender
sensitivity just from the word itself, by being sensitive, by teaching them being appreciative of
others' feelings and opinions. In other words, gender sensitivity is about being considerate of the
opposite gender's feelings and opinions. The reason this is important is because men and women
think differently, and obviously, have varying perspectives. Like, what is right for her might be
questionable for him.
From the given examples of do’s and don’ts, I will enumerate each of these, (1)
Encourage both males and females to be class leaders. (2) Address and call on girls and boys
equally. Do not segregate boys and girls in the classroom activities. (3) Make mixes groups for
group activities and games. (4) Try to ‘switch role’ for breaking down gender barriers and
stereotyping of gender roles. (5) Make both boys and girls share activities like cleaning, moving
furniture, to the chalkboard during a lesson.

(6) Plan and conduct activities that give opportunity to all learners accepting one another as
equals.
Let me first share what in those examples I am not in favor and it is “do not segregate
boys and girls in the classroom activities.” For me, it is okay that we don’t segregate boys and
girls in class in some activities. But there are some activities especially physical activities that
they should be segregated. Like in Physical Education, example in applying what they have learn
in basketball. This game includes touching and physical contact that is why it is best to segregate
the game for boys only then girls only. Mixed teams in playing basketball, for me, it is a big NO.
They might feel awkward when they fell on someone of their opposite sex. It is really more
embarrassing when someone accidentally touches his/her private part. That is why it is okay for
me to have them segregated for some of the physical activity.
The next one is, what I am in favor with. I am actually in favor of those examples in
applying to a real-classroom situation. But to answer the question, I am most in favor with
planning and conducting activities that give opportunity to all learners accepting one another as
equals. Through various strategies and activities that can be a way to show them respect to the
opposite sex, I think that sharing thoughts and opinions will not be complicated. Through various
activities, it will be a great help for them to listen and accept constructive criticism.
As an example, in a role-playing activity. They must appreciate each role they are
portraying. It is very significant to me and for them to gain self-confidence and respect by means
of this activity. Because this activity is a speaking activity. It is like they either put themself into
somebody else's shoes, or when they stay in their own shoes but put themself into an imaginary
situation. I think the fun in this activity is that students can 'become' anyone they like for a short
time. Even on how big or small the student portraying character is, it is still played an important
role in the completion of the whole performance.
Most importantly, an evaluation in the end of each activity must be conducted.
Conducting peer constructive criticism is very helpful to gain respect and to be respected. We
should let them speak out and share their thoughts because I believe it is one way of boosting
their confidence and hearing their opinions without judging them. We must appreciate each
unique characteristic so that they must feel valued and accepted in the community.
