B. Reason

(1) Objective:

The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to introduce an improved No. 4B

annular ball bearing (No. 4B bearing) with nitride hardening.

(2) Condition/Events:
In recent years there has been a slight increase in No. 4B bearing related
distress events.

(3) Cause:

A root cause investigation identified distress due to hard particle

contamination.

(4) Improvement:

The increased surface hardness of the nitrided No. 4B bearing will enhance
resistance to hard particle contamination to reduce bearing related events and
improve LM2500 engine reliability and maintainability.

C. Description

This Service Bulletin provides instructions to install a new No. 4B bearing.

D. Compliance

GE recommends this Service Bulletin be accomplished at repair or replacement

of the No. 4B bearing.

E. Manpower
No additional man-hours are required to accomplish this Service Bulletin when
parts are exposed at the depot.
