3D Wire Frame Modeling
• Disadvantages:
– Not able to fully define
real objects
(No volume and mass)
– Displays only edges of
a model

Surface Modeling
• Surface models
provide a more
complete description
of the object, but is
still not as good as
the solid model.

Solid modeling - basics
• Solids models are known to be complete, valid,
and unambiguous representations of objects.
• A complete solid is one which enables a point in
space to be classified relative to the object, if it is
inside, outside or on the object.
• This classification is called as spatial
addressability or set membership classification.
• A valid solid should not have dangling edges or
faces, then only it will allow interference
analysis, mass property calculations, finite
element modeling and analysis, CAPP, machine
vision, and NC part programming.

Solid modeling - Basics
Two details required to define an object:
• Geometry: describes location and size of entities.
Example: coordinates of a point.
• Topology: describes how the entities are connected
among themselves. Example: concavity or convexity of
an arc.

• Parameters come from:
– dimensions in 2D sketches
– dimensions on 3D geometry (advanced
systems only)
– modeling operation parameters
– variables in user-equations
• Entire part geometry can be controlled by
a small number of key parameters!
