Model SC-1 Gravel Pack Packer

Product Family No. H48820

APPLICATION
The Model SC-1™ gravel pack packers are fully retrievable, high performance gravel pack or
production packers. Except for the packing element system and gauge rings, all parts are
interchangeable with the corresponding size and style of the SC-2™ packers. The SC-1 packer and
the SC-2 packer use the same packer size designations for any given casing size and weight range.

Although it was primarily designed for use in gravel pack applications, it may also be used as a
completion packer where a high performance retrievable retainer production packer is required.

The Model SC-1 gravel pack packer is fully compatible with standard Baker Hughes sealing
accessories, including retrievable and/or expendable plugs.

The Model SC-1 gravel pack packer is capable of withstanding differential pressures up to 6,000 psi
(41.1 MPa) max (depending on size) at temperatures up to 250°F (120°C) from above or below.

Features/Benefits
 Short overall length; only slightly longer than the comparable size permanent production
packer, facilitating easier running/retrieving through “doglegs” and tight spots
 Single, self-energizing “cup forming” packing element for repeated low and high
differential pressure reversals
 Cast iron components of the exterior components above the slips to enhance the
emergency milling up of the packer should it be impossible to retrieve by the conventional
method (i.e., a straight pull)
 A hydraulically operated interlocking device, incorporated into the setting sleeve,
preventing the pre-setting of the packer during run-in

Setting: The Model SC-1 packer can be set using a hydraulic setting tool in combination with a
crossover tool or a hydro-set adapter kit. For some sizes, it can also be set using a wireline adapter kit.

Retrieval: The Model SC-1 packer is released and retrieved with a Model S-1 retrieving tool
using simple straight pull.

Optional Features
SC-1A™ (Product Family No. H48822): Features a larger sealing bore in the upper end, permitting
the use of larger through-bore packer accessories.

Model SC-1 Gravel Pack Packer

SC-1R™ (Product Family No. H48861): Features a rotationally locked setting mechanism that allows Product Family No. H48820
the packer and the entire gravel pack assembly to be rotated and reciprocated, when necessary, while
running in the hole.

SC-1AR™ (Product Family No. H48865): Combines a larger upper bore with a rotational lock
Note: Not all optional features are available in all sizes, see Packer Availability Chart.

Model SC-1L Isolation Packer

Product Family No. H48803

APPLICATION
The Model SC-1L™ isolation packer was developed for isolating zones in multi-zone gravel pack
operations. Setting force is provided by applied tubing pressure which acts on a piston area in the top
of the packer. The tool is supplied either with an SC-1™ Type packing element or a Model F™ packing
element system and has no slips. The assembly must therefore be held in position, (e.g., by being
attached to a standard packer either above or below). Centralizers should be run above and/or below the
isolation packer so that it won't set too far “off center” in the casing. Packoff force is retained by a body
lock ring. Depending on the application, these packers can be supplied with or without a honed ID.

Tubing pressure shears the screws in the top sub to begin the setting motion. To fully packoff the
packing element, tubing pressure should then be increased to the minimum value shown in the
setting information table, held for 3 minutes, and bled to zero. Repeat this pressure cycle.

No means are provided for relieving the force stored in the body lock ring. For this reason, the
packing element stays energized.
