CHISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD

1
In Germany two days of Christmas are celebrated: December 25 and 26.
December 24, Christmas Eve, is divided for many into a stressful morning and a
festive afternoon. If Christmas Eve falls on a weekday, the stores are open until
noon and full, as many people want to buy gifts or food for the holidays at the last
minute. Then the Christmas tree is decorated

As the old Christian tradition fasted from St. Martin's Day, November 11, until
December 24. For this reason, on Christmas Eve a simple dish is put on the table,
for example carp, because fish is a symbolic meal of fasting. But the most popular
dish across the country is sausage potato salad according to a 2016 survey, it's
what nearly half of Germans eat on Christmas Eve. On the first and second days of
Christmas, on the contrary, it is eaten sumptuously. The traditional Christmas
dinner is roast goose with potato dumplings and purple cabbage.

Important days at Christmas
December 6 Sankt Nikolaus: the predecessor of Santa Claus fills the shoes (to be
cleaned the night before and left at the door of the house) with chocolate,
tangerines and a gift.
December 24: shops close earlier and families prepare the Christmas tree
decorations and a traditionally simple dinner, such as sausages and Kartoffelsalat.
At dusk a bell rings signaling that Christkind (Christ's child or Jesus Christ) has
arrived, filling the tree with presents. The normal thing is to go to bed early, around
twelve, to continue celebrating in the days after.
December 25 and 26: both are declared public holidays in Germany. Families
gather to eat, usually roast goose

Typical Christmas sweets from Germany:

Baumkuchen: cylindrical-shaped fluffy bread covered in chocolate.
Spekulatius: cookie with shapes that evoke the Christmas story.
Stollen: sweet bread with raisins and orange peel.

Typical Christmas drinks from Germany:

Glühwein: the famous mulled wine, a recurring classic of the Christmas markets.
Teas and infusions: in some cases accompanied by a splash of rum to combat the
cold

The children prepare their letters that they will leave in the window for “Christkind”,
a winged figure dressed in white robes and a golden crown. According to tradition
in some parts of Germany it is believed that "Christkind" is a messenger that the
Child Jesus sends on Christmas Eve to distribute gifts among the little ones. There
is also a figure that arrives on Christmas Eve called "Weihnachtsmann", or the
Christmas Man, who looks like Santa Claus and also brings gifts.

An important tradition that continues to be passed down from generation to

generation is the Christmas tales told by parents to their children; some of these
tales belong to the beloved brothers Grimm, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow
White or Puss in Boots which are based on real legends from German history
