PSY/405: Theories Of Personality

Wk 4 Team - Theoretical Approach Proposal

Options for Personality Assessments in the workplace

Effective Communication

There are many applications of personality assessment in life, specifically in the workplace. Personality
assessment can provide details about how employees tend to view certain situations, how they may approach
certain tasks, and their preference for communication style. With different approaches to understanding
personality, there are multiple options for personality assessments.

Imagine your team has been asked to determine a theoretical approach to assessing the personality of
employees at your organization. You must create a presentation for your human resources department to
explain the theories and propose a theoretical approach to assessing employee personality.

Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation on the theories presented this week. Your
presentation should include:

o An illustration of the main concepts in each theory with a situational example. - Leslie
o A proposal of one theory as the chosen theoretical approach and rationale for proposing this
approach over the others.
o A description of the personality assessment(s) aligned with your proposed theoretical
approach.

Include a minimum of 3 sources other than your textbook.

Notes

This week, you will learn about dispositional, trait, and biologically based personality theories. These
theories shape many commonly used personality assessments and help people understand the
traits they possess and what those traits mean for their worldview, their social interactions, and their
general dispositions in life.

Gordon Allport proposed that personal dispositions are the center of our personality structure. These
dispositions describe characteristics about individuals. McCrae and Costa proposed a five-factor
model of personality to describe individuals. These five factors are rated on a scale with high scores
and low scores in each factor having specific personality characteristics. Eysenck proposed that our
genetics account for the differences in our personalities across three main dimensions (Feist, 2018).
As you can see, there are some basic similarities and differences among these theories. Be sure to
read through this week's assigned readings to learn more. This week, you will only have a learning
team assignment, which will allow you to examine these theories in depth and determine their
application in personality assessments.
