57 Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds – The

Complete Guide to Low Shedding

Hypoallergenic Dogs

Raising a dog is one of the most fulfilling things i’ve done in my life. And, many
dog owners will agree! But for some allergy-sensitive owners, is it worth the
constant sneezing, coughing and itching? My answer is yes, though I’m
fortunately not allergic to dogs.

However, there’s good news – you don’t have to make a choice between
comfortable living and keeping a dog. Instead, you can find a hypoallergenic dog
instead! With an large variety to choose from, there’s a hypoallergenic breed for
everyone.

It’s estimated that around 10 – 20% of the world population is allergic to dogs. If
this is you, know that you’re not alone. Technically, there’s no such thing as a
100% hypoallergenic dog. But, there are dog breeds that people with this allergy
can cope with.

What is a Hypoallergenic Dog?

A hypoallergenic dog is a low-shedding dog breed that produces a low amount of
allergens. So little, that it may not trigger allergic reactions in allergy-sensitive
people.

These dogs are the ultimate solution for those that; 1) want to own dogs and 2)
are sensitive to allergens produced by dogs.
Most people don’t have any problems interacting with dogs. But in reality, dogs
produce a number of allergens that affect millions of people worldwide.
These allergens are commonly found in dog fur or hair, saliva, urine and
dander. However, allergen levels can vary depending on dog breed and living
environments. For example, a dog living indoors may have higher allergen levels
than one living outdoors.
In addition, there’s often debris, such as: dirt, dust and pollen stuck on an
outdoor dog’s coat. All of which, can cause allergies in some owners.

Are Hypoallergenic Dogs Real?

There is no such thing as a true 100% hypoallergenic dog. In
fact, all dogs produce some allergens – even with one of these rare hairless
dogs.
However, most dog allergies in humans are caused by dander, which is the dog
equivalent of dandruff. So by identifying dog breeds that produce minimal
dander, we may drastically reduce allergies in humans.
Dogs shed their coat’s top layer roughly every 21 days. When this happens, the
dander is loose and circulates the air. They’ll end up attaching to walls, linen,
furniture and well, mostly everything. This is really the source of the problem for
most people.
Double-coated dog breeds are even worse. These dogs with two layers of fur
experience what’s called “coat blowing,” twice a year. As the double coats
adjust to changes in temperature, the dogs go through excessive shedding.
That being said, a dog breed with a low-shedding coat produces much less
dander than one that frequently sheds. This is the basis and logic of how we
determine which breeds are “hypoallergenic dog breeds.”
You may still experience dog allergies, but bringing home a breed on this list
will be as good as it gets for sensitive dog owners. Picking one of the 10 hairless
dog breeds makes a lot of sense too. However, they’re pretty rare and hard to
find.

1. Yorkshire Terrier
Highlights: Affectionate, Lively, Tomboy-ish.
The “Yorkie” was developed in Yorkshire (England) during the heat of the cotton
mill boom. Originally, they were used to track and hunt down pesty rats in
these clothing mills. Don’t let their size fool you, they’re skilled hunting dogs!
Today, they’ve become one of the most popular toy dog breeds in the world.
The term “big things come in small packages” best describes the Yorkshire
Terrier. Plus, they’re intelligent small dogs that thrive on human interaction.

2. Miniature Schnauzer
Highlights: Friendly, Obedient, Intelligent.
The Miniature Schnauzer is the smallest variation of the famed Standard
Schnauzer. This German dog breed came into existence by breeding the
Schnauzer with a combination of the Affenpinscher, Miniature Pinscher and Toy
Poodle.
Like many other small dogs, Mini Schnauzers were first developed to be premier
rat-catchers. They’re alert, obedient, friendly and intelligent – everything you’ll
want in a hypoallergenic small dog. However, they’ll need a decent amount of
exercise.
3. Shih Tzu
Highlights: Loyal, Playful, Social.
The ancient Shih Tzu is a Chinese dog breed developed well over 1,000 years
ago in ancient China. Surprisingly enough, they make some of the best
watchdogs in the world. They’re always alert and cautious of the environment.
Owners of a Shih Tzu will often experience a little mischief as these dogs tend
to be overly playful. However, they’re wonderful family dogs. A Shih Tzu loves

4. Maltese
Highlights: Charming, Gentle, Playful.
There are few things in the world as charming as a Maltese. How can you deny
such a vibrant and cheerful personality? Many will describe a Maltese
as playful, friendly and gentle. What more do you want in a lap dog?
Furthermore, they’re some of the most versatile dog breeds ever. For example,
they’re great companions, therapy dogs and excel at dog sports. And although
they can grow a long-hair coat, they shed very little – making them amazing
hypoallergenic dogs.
5. Havanese
Highlights: Humorous, Intelligent, Gregarious.
The Havanese originates from, you guessed it, Havana in Cuba. The most
notable features of these dogs are their silky long hair and expressive eyes.
Many owners will tell you they can communicate through their eyes, although
they may just be boasting.
Not only are they intelligent, but they’re also quite funny with a quirky
personality that’ll win over your heart. There is never a dull moment with a
Havanese dog, making them standout dogs for families with children.
6. West Highland White Terrier
Highlights: Obedient, Positive, Entertaining.
This Scottish terrier is brimming with bold confidence despite their small stature.
They are amazing dogs and they know it. The West Highland White Terrier, also
called the Westie, can be very entertaining dogs for the whole family.
They will often make people laugh with their quirkiness and mischievous acts.
Additionally, they’re naturally friendly and cheerful, extending love to everyone
around them (though, with the exception of pesty rodents).
7. Bichon Frise
Highlights: Playful, Curious, High-spirited.
The Bichon Frise, otherwise known as the comedian canine, is regarded as one
of the canine world’s greatest “personality dogs.” Simply spend an afternoon with
a Bichon and you’ll know exactly why America loves these dogs.
Not only are they intelligent, but also full of happiness and charm. Sure, they
tend to get into a bit of trouble. However, they do it out of love and they can’t help
it. You really can’t go wrong with the entertaining and sweet Bichon Frise.
8. Scottish Terrier
Highlights: Independent, Bold, Spirited.
The Scottish Terrier exhibits all the personality traits and quirks that make a
terrier, a terrier. Independent-minded and stubborn, they’re also sensitive
dogs. The short stubby legs make them less than athletic, but they still
appreciate neighborhood strolls.
On the bright side, Scottish Terriers don’t really bark – a real win for most dog
owners living in a small apartment including myself. But the best part? Yeah,
they’re hypoallergenic dogs and tend to only lose strands of hair – like with
humans.
9. Cairn Terrier
Highlights: Alert, Cheerful, Family-oriented.
The Cairn Terrier is often described as the “great family farm dog.” Though
small, they’re quite effective when it comes to vermin control. Don’t own a
farm? Not to worry, they’re some of the best companion dogs in the “fun size”
category.
These working terriers are very sensible creatures and don’t often slip or snap
back. Owners tend to describe them as intelligent and independent. Even so,
the quality that I like most is their lack of shedding, especially during “blow out”
season.
10. Italian Greyhound
Highlights: Outgoing, Vigilant, Sensitive.
The Italian Greyhounds were the most popular dogs among
noblewoman during the Middle Ages of Italy. Today, they’re premier

exercise with your small dogs, then the Italian Greyhound may be a great choice.
11. Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is one of the most undog-like dog you’ll ever meet.
Rather, many tend to describe them as cat-like dogs. With very minimal agility
and small size, the Chinese Crested does not enjoy running around like most
crazed dogs.
In fact, they probably won’t even want to go on long walks with you. But if you’re
looking for a loving and devoted lapdog, they are an excellent choice for the
allergy-sensitive dog owner. There’s also a hairless version, which may be more
hypoallergenic.

Highlights: Bright, Charming, Affectionate.
The Coton De Tulear is a hypoallergenic dog breed as unique as its name. Many
refer to them as small clownish dogs, for good reason. They’re full of positive
energy and always eager to play. In addition, they originate from Madagascar –
of all places!
Researchers believe they’re closely related to the Bichon Frise and Maltese,
which explains the fun-loving personality and irresistible charm. Their cotton-
like fur rarely sheds, making them very “pet-able” for even the ultra-sensitive
owner.
13. Border Terrier
Highlights: Affectionate, Cheerful, Brave.
When it comes to the Border Terrier, the phrase; “work hard, love harder”
describe them best. Skilled in tracking foxes, these dogs are bursting with
excitement and high energy to be able to keep up with their human hunters.
If they don’t frequent hunting trips (or regular exercise), expect them to dig
holes to expend their energy. It’s just their thing. For those that can keep up with
a Border Terrier, they make great hypoallergenic dogs, especially with kids.
14. Brussels Griffon
Highlights: Devoted, Attentive, Curious.
The Brussels Griffon is a small hypoallergenic dog breed that originates from
Belgian. This dog is known for having an independent personality with a
slight air of importance. Though, that doesn’t mean they won’t get along with
you.
it’s just that they know they’re great dogs and people around them agree. At
times, they’re quite comical with one of the best sense of humors in the
dogdom. Just try spending a day with a Brussels Griffon to feel the positive vibe
they give off.
15. Wire Fox Terrier
Highlights: Alert, Confident, Social.
The Wire Fox Terrier is truly as unique as they look. They’re super
intelligent dogs with a lot of affection and energy to go around. For these
reasons, Wire Foxes can’t stand boredom and need plenty of mental and
physical stimulation.
But if you’re not up for entertaining this dog, then it’s best to find another dog
breed. Their most distinctive characteristic is the rough, broken coat. But best
of all, they don’t really shed often, keeping your house dander-free and your
sinuses happy.
16. Norwich Terrier
Highlights: Affectionate, Devoted, Intelligent.
Norwich Terriers started off as skilled farm ratters, but quickly evolved into
companions for fox hunters. When the need for these roles started to dissipate,
people finally realized how great and friendly their personalities were.
In a few short years, they’ve become some of the best companion dogs.
Norwich Terriers are cute, smart and hypoallergenic. What’s not to love about
them? But despite their attractiveness, they’re a relatively difficult dog breed to
find.
17. Silky Terrier
Highlights: Friendly, Quick, Alert.
Known for its silky smooth coat, the Silky Terrier embodies the true nature of a
terrier with its high energy levels and spirited personalities. Owners describe
them as “small dogs with huge personalities,” and I can’t seem to disagree.

a gentle loving-side to them as well. Look past their bold personalities and you’ll
find one of the most loving and warm hypoallergenic dogs in the world.
18. Welsh Terrier

dogs. When the Welsh Terrier is in the home, they’re sweet and gentle. All of
which, can be great attributes for a family-friendly hypoallergenic dog.

Meeting a Norfolk Terrier for the first time will give you the classic toy
dog impression. They’re happy, loyal and cute little lapdogs. With their small
frame and bright smiles, they may seem like the ultimate lap dog. But are they?
Don’t mistaken their cuteness for weakness. The Norfolk is a confident
terrier with one feisty personality. In fact, they’re not your typical lapdog at all.
But at the same time, expect a loyal and affectionate dog that’s fairly low-
maintenance.
20. Australian Terrier
Highlights: Affectionate, Brave, Spirited.
The Australian Terrier approaches life with a lot of curiosity and little fear. While
they may be brave, these terriers can also be even-tempered. Spend some time
with these terriers and you’ll begin to ask how these tiny dogs pack so much
punch.

evident by their loyal nature. All this, combined with a hypoallergenic coat, makes
the Australian Terrier a standout choice for many allergic owners.

Highlights: Confident, Friendly, Bold.
These dogs were bred in Lake district of England to protect sheep and hunt
foxes, hence the name. But around humans, they’re eerily quiet dogs that don’t
lack any confidence. Though with other dogs, they tend to show aggression.
The Lakeland’s coat is tough, wiry and low-shedding – making them ideal
hypoallergenic dogs for active owners with a need for an exercise buddy. The
roughness of the coat make them less enjoyable to pet, but the low-shedding is
worth it.
22. Affenpinscher
Highlights: Confident, Brave, Comical.
It takes a while to truly “understand” an Affenpinscher. But once you do, they’re
some of the most humorous dogs you’ll ever meet. On the surface, an
Affenpinscher takes himself very seriously – but this is what makes
them famously entertaining dogs.
If you’re looking for great entertainment without dealing with the nasty allergies
that come with many dogs, the Affenpinscher is indeed for you. They love
nothing more than to put a smile on your face, though reciprocated affection is
necessary.

The Giant Schnauzer is self-explanatory: they’re the larger, more
powerful Schnauzer. Though they differ in temperaments, the Giant Schnauzer
still retains the attractive low-shedding coat. Big dogs don’t always have to come
with more shedding.
Giant Schnauzers are tenacious working dogs with great intelligence and drive.
For attentive families looking for a big hypoallergenic dog: look no further. These
schnauzers are probably everything you want and more, as long as you have a
large yard.
50. Airedale Terrier
Highlights: Affectionate, Clever, Brave.
Arguable the best all-around terrier ever developed, the Airedale gets its
nickname “The King of Terriers” because of their massive size. Of course
they’re skilled hunters, but Airedales are also tremendous athletes as well.
The Airedale will be courageous when the situation calls for it, but loving
around family and the people they love. Those looking for a hypoallergenic
terrier with a mix of endearment and strength – this breed is for you.
51. Samoyed
Highlights: Adaptable, Gentle, Affectionate.
The graceful, yet charming Samoyed dogs are known for their bright
smiles (famously called the Sammy Smile) and beautiful white hypoallergenic
coats. But as sweet and loving dogs, they demand the necessary love and
attention.
While Samoyeds are double coated dogs that do shed quite a bit, they have
minimal levels of dander. Hence, a hypoallergenic dog. Plus, they can be both
highly effective working dogs or comforting family dogs – making them
very adaptable.
52. Wire-haired Pointing Griffon
Highlights: Friendly, Loyal, Obedient.
This sporting breed is known for its harsh and low-shedding coat. While the
rough coats may not be the best to cuddle with, they are low-shedding
hypoallergenic dogs. However, they take their pack duties seriously and can be
the great additions to active families.
Furthermore, they’re loyal and obedient, making them highly trainable with little
effort. They’re also one of the best hunting dogs in the world. In fact, they’re
called the “supreme gun dogs” for a reason – they’re quick, strong and
perceptive.
53. Bouvier des Flandres
Highlights: Loving, Brave, Strong-willed.
Built like a strong and durable dog, the Bouvier des Flandres is
a stable and dependable big hypoallergenic breed. They’re highly intelligent, but
come with an intense work ethic that may not be suited for most families.
But as much as they love to work, they love working for their pack even more.
When they’re not herding cattle and sheep, they’re top-notch companion dogs
that tend to form strong bonds with the owners. You can always count on a
“Vuilbaard.”
54. Afghan Hound
Highlights: Independent, Humorous, Gentle.
Despite their regal-like appearance, the Afghan Hound will be a little silly most
of the time. Though, their independent nature can make them aloof with people.
Consequently, this has created the misconception of a low intelligent dog.
But if you’re looking for a hypoallergenic dog to show off to your friends and
family, the Afghan Hound will do the trick. They may have a lot of long fur, but
they rarely shed it. Plus, they’re as good of a conversation starter as dogs can
be.
55. Irish Water Spaniel
Highlights: Courageous, Fun-loving, Diligent.
The tallest among all recognized spaniels, the Irish Water Spaniel is known for
their curled and poodle-like hypoallergenic coat with a tapering rat-like tail.
The best thing about this spaniel is that no matter what they’re doing,
they’re having fun doing it.
Although originally bred to be water retrievers, they now serve as all-around
companions. I’d recommend them for outdoorsy and experienced owners only.
Also, it’s a plus if you live by a lake, as they love to swim!

56. Bergamasco
Highlights: Independent, Friendly, Intelligent.
The Bergamasco dog is truly a special dog one must see with their own eyes. At
first, you may notice the long dreadlocks and rough coat. But despite the
“mess” of fur, they’re relatively low shedding and maintenance family dogs.
Kids love them, and they love kids. Bergamascos
are patient, gentle and protective of their pack. All of which, are excellent
qualities you’d want in a dog entertaining your children. Give them a task and
they’ll stubbornly devote themselves to it.
57. Pudelpointer
Highlights: Charming, Intelligent, Obedient.
From the pointer dog family, the Pudelpointer is a highly versatile gun dog that
specializes in the retrieving of waterfowl, such as ducks and geese. In the home,
they’re calm and mellow for the most part. However, their energetic side comes
out during hunts.
Like many other water retrievers, the Pudelpointer was gifted with a curly
hypoallergenic coat that’s necessary to repel water and debris. While most
owners won’t be needing their duck-retrieving abilities, they’re pleasantly left with
their low-shedding coat.
