Ravensburger Escape Puzzles - jigsaw puzzles with escape game brainteasers

Each Escape Puzzle has its own intro story to set up the “escape problem.” The
finished puzzle has several mysteries/brainteasers to find and solve which lead you to
specific edge pieces. By taking those pieces out, you then assemble a meta-puzzle
solution to the story problem.

1) Jigsaw Puzzle Assembly

Note that there are differences between the box art and the finished puzzle art –
more details and things moved around. Most changes tend to be significant for solving
the brainteasers in the next step. The changes also mean that you can’t solve the
brainteasers without first assembling the jigsaw puzzle.
The edge of the Escape Puzzles has only 3 piece shapes, and any of the pieces could
interconnect with any other. As a result, edge assembly relies completely upon the
pieces’ colors, patterns, and textures. This makes the edge considerably more difficult
to assemble correctly, especially in dark border regions, and may require shuffling
some edge pieces around as the interior of the puzzle is filled in. In some cases, it may
be easier to start from the middle. Many of the edge pieces have 2, 3, or 4 digit
numbers printed on them. These are for the brainteasers.

2. Brainteasers Within the Puzzle

After assembling the jigsaw puzzle, identify and solve the 6 or 7 brainteasers within
the image. Each brainteaser resolves to a number. Once a correct answer is found,
locate a piece around the edge of the jigsaw puzzle with that number printed on it.
Look for differences from the box picture and patterns of changes as clues to the
brainteasers. Sometimes a “decoder table” will be key to one or more brainteasers.
Often a few numbers will be obvious, but several combinations of those digits (123,
231, 321, etc) could be on edge pieces as red herrings, so more clues are needed to
determine the right order. Many clues have 2-3 features (colors, angles, shapes, lines,
points, etc) that need to be interpreted correctly to get the right digits and order.
For help if you get stuck, use your cellphone camera to take a photo of the QR code in
the story so your cellphone browser can go to the hint website. The webpage for each
puzzle shows you a picture of the finished jigsaw puzzle that highlights all the clues for
the brainteasers so you can see if you missed any, then hints for each brainteaser
follow. The hints are tiered to provide more and more help on each brainteaser.

3. The Meta-Puzzle

Each escape puzzle concludes with a meta-puzzle, i.e., a puzzle made from the solution
pieces identified by the brainteasers. You use your collection of numbered edge pieces
from the brainteasers to make a new image. This meta-puzzle is then overlaid on part
of the main jigsaw puzzle to update the picture with the “escape solution”.
