The document discusses the division of the Book of Psalms, known as the Psalter, into sections called kathismas in the Orthodox Christian tradition. Each kathisma is 1/20th of the Psalter and can be read in one sitting. Each kathisma is further divided into three sections called stases. After each kathisma, meditative hymns called sessional hymns are sung. The service books provide a schedule of readings from the kathismas at vespers and matins throughout the year. The document also provides tables showing the numbering of the psalms according to the Greek and Hebrew traditions and how they correspond to the 20 kathismas.

America A kathisma (pl. kathismas or kathismata; from Grk. kathemai, "sit") is a twentieth part of the Psalter, that is, a section conveniently readable in one sitting or session. Each of the twenty kathismas is subdivided into 3 sections called stases or antiphons. A kathisma is often followed by meditative expository hymns called sessional hymns (from Latin sedere , "sit"; Grk. kathismata , Slav. sedalny). While it is advantageous to read from the Septuagint version of the Psalter, the Hebrew numbering is provided as well. The service books provide a year- round schedule of Psalter readings at vespers and Psalter readings at matins (orthros).
