Q3 Explain some of the factors which affect the choice of pile foundation type.

Include explanations of situations where driven piles be preferred over bored piles.
There is a wide range of factors that can affect the choice of a particular pile. Some
of the factors are more relevant than others and depending of the type of the
structure, can be crucial in order to be successful. For instance, the location and type
of structure is quite important when choosing the right pile. In case of structures on
land driven piles are the cheapest for a balanced loading and unrestricted site
conditions. In case of buildings next to site it is important the use of piles without
ground vibration such as bored piles, preferable than driven piles.

Another relevant factor to be aware of is the durability. In marine circumstances

driven piles are preferable than others such as steels piles, in order to avoid
corrosion. In the same conditions timber piles would be rejected to avoid the attack
of borers or insects. In sites with soils that could contain sulphates it is prudent the
use of piles incorporating high-quality precast concrete units to avoid the presence of
groundwater that could result in concrete not being compacted enough.

There are quite a few situations where driven piles are more useful than bored piles.
Concrete driven pile is more functional when extra reinforcement is needed to make
the pile more resistance to the driven force. To resist the impact there is always a
gap between casting and driven. However it can be damaged due to driven forces.

one too

Here are some of the factors that affect the choice of pile foundation type.

1. Type and loads from the superstructure.

2. Properties of soil.
3. The depth of the soil layer capable of supporting the piles.
4. Variations in length of pile required.
5. Availability of materials.
6. Durability required.
7. Available equipment for pile driving.
8. Budget.
9. The depth of water level and intensity of underground water flow.
10. Types of surrounding structures.
